Before a U.S. prison visit, confirm the specific facility’s current visiting schedule and entry rules, bring the identification it accepts, dress to its code, and take only items it expressly permits. Visitor approval, appointments, clothing restrictions, screening and arrival times vary by institution; a rule from one state or prison is not a national rule.
Check that the visit can go ahead
Start with the official visitor page for the exact prison, then contact the facility if anything is unclear. Confirm that you are approved to visit or know how to apply, whether you need an appointment, which days and hours are available, any visitor limits, and whether a temporary suspension or operational notice affects the visit. The Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) directs visitors to review the regulations for the specific institution and verify visiting hours; Virginia notes that local schedules and procedures can vary and change. Michigan provides links to facility schedules and quarantine-status information.

Bring the right identification
Carry the original, valid photo ID specified by the facility. Check that the name matches your application or registration, and verify ID rules for children separately: requirements differ by jurisdiction and age.

- Oregon: Visitors age 15 and older must bring valid identification. The state lists a driver’s license, passport, state ID, military ID, school ID or other government ID.
- Missouri: Adults need current photo ID, such as a driver’s license or Department of Revenue ID. Visitors ages 13–18 may use a current school photo ID or government/state ID.
- Virginia: Visitors need valid picture ID matching the application. Listed examples include a driver’s license, qualifying passport, military ID or other official federal or state picture ID.
These are jurisdiction-specific examples, not a shared national standard. Check the intended facility’s accepted documents before travelling.
Choose clothing using the facility’s dress code
A modest, conservative outfit is a sensible starting point, but it does not guarantee entry. Read the local dress code and follow its exact rules on coverage, length, colors, footwear and headwear. The BOP warns that inappropriate clothing may lead to denied entry. Its general list of prohibited items includes revealing shorts, halter tops, bathing suits, sheer garments, crop tops, low-cut tops, leotards, spandex, miniskirts, backless tops, hats or caps, sleeveless garments, skirts two inches or more above the knee, high slits and clothing resembling inmate attire. The BOP still directs visitors to the policy for the particular location.

- Oregon: Visitors must not wear blue denim or clothing of any kind that is blue. The state also advises knee-length or longer clothing and prohibits revealing, sheer, suggestive or camouflage clothing.
- Missouri: Restrictions cover revealing, tight, excessively baggy, short, slit or damaged clothing, as well as clothing bearing certain symbols. Headwear is restricted except for verified religious purposes.
- Virginia: Attire must cover the body from the neck to the kneecaps. Restrictions include form-fitting clothes, leggings, see-through clothing, certain tops and hems, clothing resembling offender attire and inappropriate symbols.
Check any local guidance on footwear, metal supports or religious headwear. Oregon suggests bringing a spare outfit in case the clothing you arrive in does not meet its requirements.

Take only items the facility allows
Do not assume you can bring a purse, phone, watch, cash, food, medication, photographs or gifts into the visiting area. Rules may distinguish between carrying an item into the facility, securing it in a locker and leaving it elsewhere; locker availability is not universal. Ask about each item you need before the visit.
- Oregon: Phones and other electronics, weapons and hats are among items to leave at home or in a locker. The state lists limited coins, up to five non-Polaroid photographs or five sheets of photos, specified infant supplies and emergency medication held at the Sergeant’s desk as examples of allowed items.
- Missouri: Permitted examples include coins in a clear bag or pouch for vending, specified medical supplies and defined infant supplies. Small lockers are available at most institutions, according to Missouri’s guidance.
These exceptions apply to the named state guidance; they should not be assumed at another prison. If you need medication, a mobility aid, medical equipment, religious headwear, infant supplies or an accessibility accommodation, contact the facility in advance and follow its documentation and check-in instructions. The available state examples do not establish one nationwide exception process.

Allow time for arrival and screening
Follow the facility’s stated arrival window rather than assuming you can arrive early or enter immediately. For example, Virginia asks scheduled visitors to arrive one hour early for screening. Missouri says visitors may arrive in the parking lot no earlier than 30 minutes before visiting begins. Those are local examples, not universal timings.

A practical pre-departure checklist
- Confirm the visit date, hours, approval or appointment status, visitor limits and any temporary closure or status notice.
- Pack the original ID accepted by the facility; check separate requirements for minors and matching names on applications.
- Review the local dress code, including color, coverage, footwear and headwear restrictions.
- Verify every item you plan to bring, especially medication, medical equipment, infant supplies, phones, food and photographs.
- Check the required arrival time and screening instructions, and make a plan for belongings the facility will not admit.
The BOP advises visitors to be familiar with all visiting rules, regulations and procedures before a visit. For federal facilities, it also states that an incarcerated person receives at least four hours of visiting time per month by law, while a prison usually can provide more subject to limits imposed by the Warden. That federal duration statement is not a rule for every state prison and does not replace checking a particular facility’s schedule.
