Check the official corrections agency page for the specific prison, then confirm the current visiting status, facility rules, and schedule. You must also check whether you personally are approved to visit: a prison may allow in-person visits without having cleared every prospective visitor. Because rules and operating conditions can change, verify details with the facility before traveling.
Start with the person’s current prison and jurisdiction
First confirm where the person is currently held. A transfer can make an old facility page—and its visiting information—irrelevant. In the United States, the right source depends on whether the person is in federal, state, or local custody.

- Federal custody: Use the Federal Bureau of Prisons inmate locator to identify the institution, then consult BOP’s visiting guidance.
- State or local custody: Use the responsible state or local corrections department. USAGov’s prisoner records guidance directs people to the relevant jurisdiction; it is not a single national prison-visitation status page. The page was last updated November 17, 2025.
Do not assume a federal procedure applies to a state or local prison, or that one state’s rules apply elsewhere.

Open the official page for the specific facility and look for “visiting,” “visitation,” or “family visitors.” Check for a current in-person status, temporary notices, the visiting schedule, and links to the facility’s governing rules. A general agency page may describe how visits work without showing whether a particular institution is currently receiving visitors.

Some departments publish facility-by-facility status. For example, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation visiting-status page reports in-person status and facility-specific exceptions, with update times. Its entries are examples for California facilities, not a nationwide schedule; check the page and the relevant prison’s instructions for current details.
For federal prisons, BOP directs visitors to the visiting regulations posted for each institution. It advises: “You should always verify a facility’s visiting hours by reading official visiting regulations posted on the bop.gov web page of all BOP locations.”

Is visitation open today, and what are the visiting hours?
Check the facility’s current notice and schedule rather than relying on an old search result, a general agency page, or hours listed for another prison. Read the rules for the specific institution and, where relevant, the person’s housing unit. Look for:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Which days and hours visits are offered, and whether a housing unit has a different schedule.
- Whether you need an appointment or reservation, and how to arrange one.
- When visitor processing closes; arriving before the end of visiting hours may not be enough.
- Identification, clothing, and item restrictions that could prevent entry.
- Notices about a temporary suspension, restriction, or other facility-specific exception.
Displayed hours may be typical rather than applicable to every case. BOP facility pages warn that hours can vary, and a warden may restrict or cancel visits. Check the institution’s own current rules and notices before setting out.
Do you need approval before visiting?
Yes, in some systems visitors must be cleared in advance. For federal custody, BOP says a visitor must be approved and placed on the incarcerated person’s visiting list. Follow the BOP instructions for that institution; do not assume that appearing during open visiting hours is sufficient.
State and local approval requirements differ. Check the responsible agency’s visitor rules or contact the prison to learn whether you need to apply, what information is required, and whether your approval is in place. Facility-wide permission to hold visits and your individual eligibility are separate checks.

How do you check whether a prison visit was canceled?
- Reopen the official facility status page and notices. Check for a new suspension, restriction, schedule change, or exception.
- Review the facility’s current visiting rules and schedule. Confirm that the date and time still apply to the person’s institution and, if specified, housing unit.
- Call the facility if anything is unclear or you are about to travel. Ask whether in-person visits are operating on your planned date, whether your visit requires an appointment, and whether your approval and arrival time meet the rules.
Schedules can be amended and visits can be restricted or canceled. Rhode Island’s Department of Corrections, for example, advises visitors to verify schedules and requirements before each visit; that guidance is specific to RIDOC, but the practical reason to confirm close to travel applies broadly.
Which source should you use?
| Where the person is held | Starting point | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Federal custody | BOP inmate locator and the institution’s BOP visiting page | Institution-specific rules and hours, visitor approval, and any restrictions or cancellation |
| State or local custody | The responsible state or local corrections department and the specific facility page | Current facility status, local approval procedure, schedule, and visitor rules |
Neither route should be treated as a universal status source for every U.S. prison. Use the page for the actual facility, then contact that facility when a key detail is missing or a trip is imminent.
