Before you start: check compatibility and prepare both devices
Find the exact watch and phone models, then confirm the phone supports the watch and install the manufacturer’s required app. Have the relevant Apple Account or Google Account credentials and watch passcode ready. Update and charge both devices where applicable, connect to Wi-Fi when requested, and keep the old phone and watch nearby until transfer and sync are complete.

Apple’s procedure for moving an Apple Watch to a new iPhone specifically requires the Apple Account and password, the watch passcode, Wi-Fi on both iPhones, and at least 50 percent charge on both the Apple Watch and new iPhone. Back up or sync before changing phones or watches
Do this before unpairing, erasing, or trading in the old device. What comes across can depend on the ecosystem, backup method, and sync settings; a successful watch pairing alone does not prove that all health history has moved.

Apple Watch: check Health sync and back up the iPhone
Apple says, “Backing up your iPhone also backs up your Apple Watch.” Before switching, check that Health data is syncing with iCloud. If you use a computer backup instead, encrypt it to preserve Health and Activity content. Back up the old iPhone before setting up the new one. See Apple’s pairing and backup guidance.
Pixel Watch: start the backup well ahead of the switch
Google recommends backing up before changing devices. The Pixel Watch must be on Wi-Fi and on its charger while the phone app starts the backup. Google cautions that this can take up to a few days; that is its stated upper time guidance, not a measured typical duration. Follow Google’s Pixel Watch backup and transfer instructions.

Galaxy Watch: make a backup in Galaxy Wearable
On the connected phone, open Galaxy Wearable > Watch settings > Accounts and backup > Back up data. During reconnection, the app may offer a saved backup to restore. Samsung’s steps are in its Galaxy Watch reconnection instructions.

Apple Watch to a new iPhone
- Back up the old iPhone and make sure the Health data precautions above are addressed.
- Set up the new iPhone from the latest backup. Keep the Apple Watch unlocked on your wrist and near the new iPhone.
- Open the Apple Watch app on the new iPhone and follow the on-screen prompts.
- If the iPhone asks you to start pairing rather than recognizing the watch, Apple directs you to unpair the watch and set it up again.
Use Apple’s current pairing instructions if the prompts differ or you need the detailed recovery steps.

Pixel Watch to a new phone
- On the watch, open Settings > System and start Transfer watch. Start the transfer from the Pixel Watch app on the old phone as well.
- On the new phone, add the watch in the Pixel Watch app. Confirm that the pairing code shown on the phone and watch matches.
- Sign in to the Google Account if prompted, then complete the transfer in the app.
Google says the old pairing is removed only after the transfer succeeds. For an LTE watch, the flow checks whether the new phone has the same number; if it does not, you may be prompted to set up number twinning again. See Google’s transfer instructions for the applicable prompts.
Galaxy Watch to a new phone
- Open Galaxy Wearable on the new phone and reconnect the watch by following the app’s prompts.
- If the app offers a saved backup, select it to restore.
The available steps can vary by watch and software. Use Samsung’s reconnection guide for the device-specific flow.

Restore data to a replacement watch
Replacement Pixel Watch
In the Pixel Watch app, add the replacement watch and select an available backup during setup. Google says the restore can include apps, data, settings, the watch face, and tiles. This describes a replacement-watch restore, not a guarantee that every health record or data type will transfer. Follow Google’s backup and restore instructions.
Replacement Apple Watch or Galaxy Watch
For Apple Watch, use the Watch app’s setup prompts after restoring or transferring the iPhone backup; Apple’s instructions describe pairing a watch with a new iPhone, rather than guaranteeing a complete cross-brand health-history move. For Galaxy Watch, reconnect through Galaxy Wearable and restore a backup if the app offers one. Samsung’s guide covers the Galaxy Watch reconnect flow.

What can transfer—and what remains uncertain
Backup support is model- and software-dependent. Android Developers describes cloud backup and restore for supported Wear OS devices running Wear OS 4 or higher; this does not mean every Wear OS watch supports the feature. Check the Wear OS cloud backup eligibility guidance for the specific device.
The official instructions cited here describe ecosystem-specific backups and transfer flows, but do not establish that health history will migrate between different watch brands or platforms. If you are switching ecosystems, check the destination platform’s health-data import options before you erase or give away the old devices; do not assume pairing will carry the history with it.
Verify the transfer before wiping the old devices
Once setup finishes, check the new watch and its companion app before erasing or relinquishing either old device. This is a prudent safeguard because the cited platform instructions describe separate backup and transfer paths rather than one universal verification procedure.

- Open the relevant health app and confirm that expected data is syncing or visible.
- For an LTE watch, check that cellular service works, especially if the phone number changed.
If something is missing, keep the old devices intact and revisit the relevant platform’s backup or restore steps before trying an erase or reset.
