These are feature-based recommendations drawn from product listings and documentation, not hands-on speed tests. If you are asking, “How do I edit a CSV file in VS Code without Excel?”, start by choosing whether you want to edit the text itself, work in a grid, or apply repeatable data-cleaning steps.
Choose an extension by workflow
| Extension | Best fit | Formats documented | How changes are handled |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rainbow CSV | Reading and querying delimited text in the editor | Delimited files with common or user-configured separators | Work in the text editor; alignment options can modify file content |
| Microsoft Data Wrangler | Exploring and cleaning data, with transformations that can become Python code | CSV, TSV, XLS, XLSX, and Parquet | Export cleaned data to a new CSV or Parquet file, or export generated code |
| CSV & Excel Viewer | Previewing delimited files and listed Excel workbook types | CSV, TSV, TAB, XLSX, and XLSM | Listing describes preview, sorting, and filtering for CSV columns |
| Light CSV View & Edit | Working directly with CSV or TSV in a grid | CSV and TSV | Cell edits save through VS Code and support undo and redo |
“Excel support” is not interchangeable across these tools: Data Wrangler lists XLS and XLSX, while CSV & Excel Viewer lists XLSX and XLSM. Check the listing for your particular file type rather than assuming every workbook format is supported.
Rainbow CSV: stay in the text editor
Rainbow CSV is a good fit when you want a CSV or other delimited file to remain plain text, but need help tracking columns. It colors fields by column and offers column tracking, alignment, CSVLint checks, and RBQL, a SQL-like query language. Common delimiters are supported, and arbitrary separators can be configured.
#1 Best Overall
CSVLint checks whether rows have consistent field counts and whether double quotes are used consistently. Alignment can improve readability, but note that at least one alignment option modifies the file’s content; it is not merely a visual overlay.
Limits to know before using it
- The listing says files above 300,000 lines or 20 MB may require disabling VS Code’s “Editor:Large File Optimizations” setting.
- Above 50 MB, VS Code disables all Rainbow CSV features.
- The extension may be less effective with many columns or multiline fields, and its colors can be harder to distinguish in light themes.
These are Rainbow CSV-specific conditions, not a comparison of speed against the other extensions.

Microsoft Data Wrangler: explore, clean, and keep the steps
Microsoft Data Wrangler integrates with VS Code and Jupyter notebooks. It supports viewing and editing CSV and TSV, XLS and XLSX, and Parquet files. Its features include column summaries, filters, sorting, built-in cleaning operations, and generated Python/Pandas code.
You can export generated code to a notebook or save cleaned data as a new CSV or Parquet file. Microsoft states: “The original dataset is not modified until you explicitly export your changes.” This makes Data Wrangler useful when you want to inspect transformations before applying them to a saved output.

Requirements and encoding caveat
The documentation specifies Python 3.8 or later and Pandas 0.25.2 or later. Microsoft’s guide is dated 04/04/2024, so check the current documentation for updated requirements before installing or building a workflow around it.
Directly opening a file can fail if it uses a non-UTF-8 encoding. The documented workaround is to read the file through Pandas with an encoding setting, rather than relying on direct opening.

CSV & Excel Viewer: preview CSVs and selected workbooks
CSV & Excel Viewer is aimed at previewing CSV, TSV, and TAB files, as well as XLSX and XLSM workbooks. For CSV files, the listing describes sorting and filtering columns; workbook sheets can be switched using sheet tabs.
The listing says the extension uses AG Grid Community and SheetJS as open-source replacements for its original paid Wijmo dependency. Treat it as a preview option for the formats named above; the listing does not establish support for every Excel format or describe a full workbook-editing workflow.

Light CSV View & Edit: edit cells in a grid
Light CSV View & Edit is a fit for direct CSV and TSV grid work. Its listing describes search, text, number, and regex filters, view-only sorting, column resizing and reordering, and in-place cell edits saved through VS Code’s save, undo, and redo behavior.
It also lists automatic delimiter detection and support for quoted fields containing embedded commas or newlines. Files above 200,000 rows open read-only, according to the listing. That is a stated product limit, not an independently measured performance result.
How to decide
- Choose Rainbow CSV if you prefer text editing and want column cues, consistency checks, or RBQL queries.
- Choose Data Wrangler if you want visual data exploration and cleaning steps that can be exported as Pandas code, and you can meet its Python and Pandas requirements.
- Choose CSV & Excel Viewer if your main task is previewing the specific CSV-like or workbook formats it lists.
- Choose Light CSV View & Edit if you want a CSV/TSV grid with in-place cell edits, and your file fits its editable row limit.
Before adopting any extension for a critical workflow, verify its current Marketplace listing and try it on representative files, especially if they are large, use unusual encodings, or contain multiline fields. Product features and support can change; the available descriptions do not establish comparative speed or reliability.
