There is no universal winner. Choose Apple Watch if you have a compatible iPhone and value its apps, notifications, and integration with Apple services. Choose Garmin if longer intervals between charges, structured training, or a watch built around running and outdoor use matter more. The best comparison is between specific models—not the two brands as a whole.
Start with your phone and the features you use every day
Apple Watch is designed to pair with a compatible iPhone, making it the more natural option if you want everyday interactions and Apple services closely connected to your phone. Apple says watchOS 27 requires an iPhone 11 or later, or an iPhone SE (2nd generation or later), running iOS 27 or later. Apple also cautions that not every feature is available on every device or in every region. Check the Series 12 announcement for Apple’s current compatibility and availability details.

Some Garmin watches work with both iOS and Android. For example, TechRadar’s August 2026 guide lists the Garmin Venu X1 as compatible with both. That does not mean every Garmin feature works identically with every phone, or that every Garmin model has the same capabilities. Before buying, check the exact watch’s supported phone functions—especially the apps, notifications, replies, calls, and services you expect to use. TechRadar’s guide to smartwatches for iPhone users discusses the Venu X1 and Apple Watch Series 11.

Apple’s range is organized around broad tiers: SE for a lower starting price, Series for a general-purpose smartwatch, and Ultra for a more adventure-oriented watch. Garmin’s catalog is broader in activity focus, with Venu and vívoactive aimed at general wellness, Forerunner at running, and fēnix and Instinct at rugged outdoor use. Garmin’s U.S. watch catalog presents these families, but features differ by model.
#1 Best Overall
- Designed with a bright, colorful AMOLED display, get a more complete picture of your health, thanks to battery life of up to 11 days in smartwatch mode (5 days display always-on)
- Body Battery energy monitoring helps you understand when you’re charged up or need to rest, with even more personalized insights based on sleep, naps, stress levels, workouts and more (data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)
- Get a sleep score and personalized sleep coaching for how much sleep you need — and get tips on how to improve plus key metrics such as HRV status to better understand your health (data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)
- Find new ways to keep your body moving with more than 30 built-in indoor and GPS sports apps, including walking, running, cycling, HIIT, swimming, golf and more
- Wheelchair mode tracks pushes — rather than steps — and includes push and handcycle activities with preloaded workouts for strength, cardio, HIIT, Pilates and yoga, challenges specific to wheelchair users and more (data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)
That means a premium Forerunner or fēnix is not a stand-in for every Garmin. If you want an everyday Garmin alternative, start by comparing a Venu model with the Apple Watch you are considering. If you run seriously, compare a specific Forerunner with that Apple model. For rugged outdoor use, compare a particular fēnix or Instinct against Apple Watch Ultra, checking navigation, battery, durability, and size rather than relying on brand labels.
Choose based on how you will use the watch
Everyday smartwatch use
Apple Watch is the stronger starting point if your priority is a broad smartwatch experience tied to an iPhone: everyday apps, notifications, calls and payments, and Apple-service integration. The exact features still depend on model, phone, software, and region.

Running, training, and outdoor activity
Garmin’s family structure makes it easier to focus on a specific activity: Forerunner is positioned for runners, while fēnix and Instinct are oriented toward outdoor use. In its Venu X1 coverage, TechRadar highlights Garmin Coach, Training Readiness, maps, Body Battery, and stress monitoring. Treat these as features of that example, not as a checklist that applies to every Garmin. Check the model page for the sport profiles, navigation tools, training metrics, and accessory support you need.

Battery claims: useful context, not a head-to-head test
Apple says Series 12 offers up to 24 hours of everyday battery life and up to 10 hours during an outdoor workout. These are Apple’s manufacturer figures, not independent comparison results. Apple’s test routine includes time checks, notifications, app use, a workout with Bluetooth music, and sleep tracking; the company says actual results vary. Its battery information and test notes describe the test conditions.
For Garmin Venu X1, TechRadar’s August 2026 guide lists eight days of battery life, while its narrative says up to nine days with the always-on display off. Those figures come from a reviewer’s listing and narrative, not a controlled comparison with Apple’s tests. Your results with either watch can change with display settings, GPS use, workouts, and other features. Compare the models using the settings and workout pattern you actually expect, rather than treating these numbers as equivalent measurements.

Price and tier: use launch prices as reference points
Apple’s September 2026 announcement gives a U.S. starting price of $399 for Series 12. In January 2026, Apple announced U.S. starting prices of $249 for SE 3, $399 for Series 11, and $799 for Ultra 3. These are dated launch/reference prices, not current retailer quotes; retail prices and availability can change. See Apple’s September 2026 announcement and January 2026 announcement.

There is no single Garmin price that represents its range, which spans different families and configurations. Compare current local prices for the exact models you are considering, including size, materials, and any GPS or cellular differences that apply. A lower-priced watch may be the better fit if it already covers your needs; paying for a premium family makes sense only when you will use its specific capabilities.
Best Value

- Engineered with a supertough 45 mm fiber-reinforced polymer case and metal-reinforced bezel
- Built-in LED flashlight with variable intensities and strobe modes gives you greater visibility in the outdoors and provides convenient illumination when you need it
- Know your body better with health monitoring features, including wrist-based heart rate, advanced sleep monitoring, Pulse Ox and more (this is not a medical device, and data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked; Pulse Ox not available in all countries)
- Navigate confidently with a 3-axis compass, barometric altimeter and multi-band GPS with SatIQ technology, which delivers superior positioning while also optimizing battery life
Health features are not diagnoses
Health-feature access varies by watch, software, and region, so verify availability for the exact model and country before relying on a feature. Apple’s sleep-apnea notification description concerns detecting signs in adults without a diagnosis; it is not a diagnosis itself. A smartwatch metric or notification should not replace clinical advice or care.
Which one should you buy?
- Choose Apple Watch if you have a compatible iPhone and prioritize everyday apps, interactions, and Apple-service integration.
- Choose Garmin if your main priorities are longer intervals between charges, structured training, or a family tailored to running or outdoor use.
- For a runner, compare a specific Forerunner with the Apple model you would otherwise buy, using your required training and navigation features as the deciding criteria.
- For outdoor use, compare the particular Garmin fēnix or Instinct with Apple Watch Ultra on navigation, battery, durability, and fit.
Decide by model, phone compatibility, activity, and current local price. A brand-level verdict would obscure the differences that matter most to your purchase.
