Before setting up a new MacBook Pro, find out whether it belongs to you or is managed by your employer or school. If it is organization-owned or assigned for management, follow the organization’s instructions before choosing accounts or trying to skip setup steps. If it is your personal Mac, you can set it up as new or transfer your files now—and you can still migrate data later.
Before you turn on a work- or school-issued Mac
Check the instructions from your employer or school first. A Mac assigned through Apple School Manager or Apple Business may enroll in a device-management service during Setup Assistant. Management can configure the Mac, distribute apps, and control or skip some setup screens. The exact process depends on the organization’s management service and its policies.

Your IT team may provide account instructions, Wi-Fi settings, required apps, or a specific enrollment sequence. Follow those directions rather than trying to bypass enrollment or erase the Mac. Apple describes how organizations can control Setup Assistant, but your employer or school determines its own workflow. Apple’s Setup Assistant deployment guide explains that available controls vary between management services.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoose when to transfer your files
You can transfer data while setting up the Mac or later using Migration Assistant. Choosing to set up the Mac as new does not prevent a later transfer. Apple lists another Mac, a Time Machine backup, a startup disk or storage device, and a Windows PC as possible sources. The available steps may vary with your macOS version and the source computer.

| When | What it means |
|---|---|
| During Setup Assistant | Choose the data-transfer option when it appears and follow the on-screen instructions to connect to a supported source. |
| After setup | Open Migration Assistant on the new Mac and follow its prompts. You can transfer later if you want to begin with a clean setup. |
For a wireless transfer between Macs, keep both computers updated and connected to the same network, as Apple recommends. Apple says a direct Thunderbolt or Ethernet connection is often faster than wireless for Mac-to-Mac migration; it does not give a guaranteed transfer time. A cable is optional, not required. If you use one, check the ports on both Macs and confirm the cable is compatible. See Apple’s MacBook Pro migration guide for its transfer instructions.
Set up accounts with ownership in mind
Personal Mac
If you own the Mac, choose accounts and transfer options that suit your personal setup. If you also need access to school or work resources, follow that organization’s instructions for those accounts or services; do not assume a personal setup replaces a required enrollment process.

Organization-managed Mac
Apple’s account-driven enrollment documentation for Apple School Manager says a Managed Apple Account and a personal Apple Account can coexist on the same device, with work and personal data separated and personal information private from IT. This statement applies to the described account-driven enrollment workflow, not automatically to every school, employer, or management configuration. Check your organization’s policy for what accounts it supports and what information is managed. Apple’s Apple School Manager device workflow describes that enrollment model.
Complete setup without conflicting with management
On an organization-managed Mac, complete enrollment as directed and install or configure the required apps and settings. Some Setup Assistant screens may be controlled or omitted by management, so a universal sequence of buttons may not match what you see. If a screen or account choice differs from your instructions, ask your IT team before proceeding.

On a personally owned Mac, continue through the options shown in Setup Assistant. If you skipped migration, you can use Migration Assistant afterward.
