To set up a new laptop safely, complete its first-run setup, connect to the internet, install available operating-system updates, and then deliberately transfer or restore your files. Before calling it ready, verify that important files are backed up and that you can access any required recovery key. Windows and Mac have different setup and backup options, so follow the section for your computer.
Before you start
- Connect the laptop to power and have your Wi-Fi password and account recovery methods available.
- If this is a work or school laptop, follow your organization’s enrollment instructions. Don’t bypass device management or set it up as a personal computer without approval.
- Allow time for setup to connect to the internet. Apple notes that some Mac Setup Assistant steps require internet access and that a Mac may need an update during initial setup: Apple’s MacBook Air setup guide.
Complete first-run setup and install updates
During setup
Choose the account type that fits the owner and device: personal, work or school, or local where available. Set a strong account password and a device PIN or passcode if offered; enable fingerprint or face sign-in if you want it. Review privacy, accessibility, location, diagnostics, and voice-assistant choices rather than accepting every default automatically. Exact screens and labels vary by operating-system release and laptop.

Windows
- After reaching the desktop, open Settings > Windows Update and select the option to check for updates.
- Install available updates and restart if prompted. Check again after restarting, and repeat while Windows Update offers further updates.
- For model-specific firmware or drivers, use Windows Update or the laptop manufacturer’s official support page for your exact model.
Check which Windows release is installed: support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes ended on that date. A new computer in 2026 should run a supported Windows release and have its current updates installed. Microsoft’s Windows Backup and restore guidance links to current Windows support information.

Mac
- After completing Setup Assistant, open System Settings > General > Software Update.
- Install available updates and restart if asked, then check Software Update again.
Apple’s cited setup instructions cover MacBook Air; screens and options can vary on other Macs and macOS releases. Apple’s setup guide describes the initial setup flow.

Choose a transfer or a fresh start
A migration saves time, but it is not necessarily a complete clone. Decide whether convenience or a clean start matters more, and check what the selected transfer method actually includes.
| Route | What to consider | Practical choice |
|---|---|---|
| Restore or migrate | Usually reduces manual copying, but can bring along settings or clutter and may omit apps, credentials, or some files. | Choose it for convenience, then audit what arrived and reinstall or copy anything missing. |
| Set up as new | Requires more manual work to reinstall apps and bring over files, but avoids carrying over everything from the old computer. | Choose it when you intentionally want a clean configuration; copy only the files and settings you need. |
Moving to a Mac
Mac Setup Assistant offers setup as new or migration from an iPhone or iPad, another Mac, a Time Machine backup or startup disk, or a Windows PC. Select a recent source you trust. For detailed current instructions, use Apple’s Mac setup guide.

Moving between Windows PCs
Microsoft’s documented PC-to-PC transfer requires a new Windows 11 PC running version 2024 or later and a Microsoft account during setup. The guide says to connect both computers to the same Wi-Fi or LAN and power. Availability has processor and account eligibility requirements, and the described flow is not available in China. See Microsoft’s transfer requirements and instructions before relying on it.

Set up and verify a backup
Migration, cloud sync, and backup do different jobs. Migration moves data to a new machine; sync keeps selected files available through a cloud account; backup gives you a copy you can use to recover files. Check the destination and know how you would restore what matters.
Windows: Windows Backup and OneDrive
- Open Start, search for “backup,” and open Windows Backup, or go to Settings > Accounts > Windows backup.
- Select which folders to sync to OneDrive and which available settings or app information you want saved. Microsoft lists Desktop, Documents, Pictures, Videos, and Music among the folders, and accessibility, Wi-Fi and accounts, personalization, and language preferences among settings.
- Check the backup status in Windows Backup or Settings. Confirm that important files appear in the OneDrive destination and that the account has enough storage.
Microsoft says a free Microsoft account includes 5 GB of OneDrive storage; the support page does not state a publication year for that figure. Personalization backup requires signing in to OneDrive and having sufficient storage. Work or school account behavior may differ and can be controlled by the organization. See Microsoft’s Windows Backup instructions.

Mac: choose a backup source you can restore
Apple identifies a Time Machine backup as one possible migration source during Mac setup. The cited setup page does not provide detailed current instructions for configuring a Time Machine backup, so use Apple’s current Time Machine guidance for the actual setup rather than assuming a migration copy alone is an ongoing backup.
Cloud copy, local copy, and recovery media are not interchangeable
Cloud sync can make selected files available off the laptop, but it depends on the selected folders, account, storage quota, and internet access. A separate external drive can provide an independent local backup if you configure it and verify that files are being copied. A Windows USB recovery drive helps with recovery options; it is not, by itself, proof that personal files are backed up. Microsoft recommends backing up important files, knowing the BitLocker recovery key, and creating a recovery drive on USB. See Microsoft’s Windows recovery options.
Best Value
- 【Powerful Performance】Equipped with an Intel N150 CPU, featuring up to 4.4 GHz, ensuring efficient and powerful multitasking capabilities.
- 【Versatile Connectivity】Stay connected with multiple ports including USB 3.0 Type-C, USB 3.0 Type-A, and a headphone/mic combo jack, with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth for seamless wireless networking.
Check encryption and recovery access on Windows
- Open Settings > Privacy & security > Device encryption and check its status.
- If the control is missing, Microsoft says the device may not support Device Encryption or the signed-in account may lack administrator rights.
- If encryption is enabled, confirm that you can access the recovery key before you need it. Do not infer key availability from the account or setup screens alone.
- Back up important files and consider creating a Windows recovery drive on a USB device. Keep the recovery key somewhere accessible if the laptop itself cannot be opened.
Microsoft describes Device Encryption as enabling BitLocker encryption automatically for the operating-system and fixed drives. On supported devices, signing in with a Microsoft or work/school account turns it on and attaches a recovery key to that account; signing in with a local account does not enable it automatically. BitLocker behavior can also depend on device configuration and setup choices. Microsoft’s guidance explains Device Encryption and BitLocker encryption and recovery-key handling.
Quick Recap
Finish the everyday setup
- Install only the applications you need, using the platform app store or the software maker’s official source.
- Remove trials or manufacturer utilities only after checking what each one does; some may support device functions or updates.
- Configure browser sync or a password manager if you use one, and enable multifactor authentication on important accounts.
- Set up device-finding features, notifications, privacy preferences, and accessibility options to suit how you use the laptop.
- For a managed device, check with IT before changing security, backup, or management settings.
