Which console makes more sense for you?
Choose PS5 if you are starting fresh
For someone buying a console primarily for GTA VI without an established library, standard PS5 is the straightforward default. Rockstar’s official GTA VI page uses the phrase “Plays Best On PlayStation 5.” A UK comparison published September 29, 2026 also favored the standard PS5 as a lower-cost entry point than the Xbox Series X disc model it compared. Neither point proves a measured graphics or frame-rate advantage.
Choose Xbox Series X if your Xbox ecosystem already matters
Existing Xbox purchases and regular Game Pass use are practical reasons to stay with Xbox. The value of keeping access to a library or subscription can outweigh a different console’s GTA VI positioning or a temporary price gap. Consider what you already own and use, rather than treating GTA VI as the only cost of switching.

Does GTA VI run or look better on PS5?
Not on the evidence currently established by the reviewed official listings. Rockstar’s “Plays Best On PlayStation 5” wording is a recommendation, but it does not publish a head-to-head test, frame rate, resolution, or image-quality comparison. The game is scheduled to launch November 19, 2026, and reliable comparative measurements from the released game are not available in the reviewed sources. Avoid buying on claims of a confirmed PS5 or Xbox Series X performance lead.
PlayStation describes GTA VI on PS5 with Tempest 3D Audio, the PS5 SSD, and DualSense haptics and its integrated speaker. These are official descriptions of PS5 features, not a direct comparison with Xbox’s audio, storage, or controller experience. PlayStation’s GTA VI page also lists PS5 Pro support, but the reviewed official material does not specify a GTA VI Pro mode or establish an advantage over standard PS5 or Xbox Series X. A comparison published September 29, 2026 said Rockstar had not announced a Pro-specific mode at that time.

Creative Bloq reported Idealo figures showing UK console sales rose 33% for PS5 and 34% for Xbox Series X|S in the week after Rockstar’s August Extended Look. Those are secondary reported sales figures; Creative Bloq cautioned that correlation does not prove the video caused the changes. They do not establish which console players prefer or how GTA VI performs.

Rockstar Support lists Standard and Ultimate editions for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Its support article says the boxed physical package contains a download code, not a disc. Check that the code matches your console platform and region before buying. Rockstar Support
The Standard Edition includes the game. Rockstar says Standard owners can separately buy an Ultimate Edition upgrade through the relevant platform storefront after redeeming the Standard code. PlayStation’s US listing showed $79.99 for Standard and $99.99 for Ultimate at the time of the 2026 research; these are regional, changeable prices, not universal recommendations.
