How to Set Up a New Gadget Securely: Accounts, Permissions, and Updates

A practical setup checklist for securing a new connected gadget, from its account and Wi-Fi to updates, app permissions, and privacy settings.

Set up a new connected gadget by securing its account and home network, using the manufacturer’s official setup process, installing available updates, and granting only the permissions needed for the features you plan to use. Exact menus and options vary by model, so follow the current instructions for your specific device.

Before you begin: identify the exact device

Find the gadget’s make and model, then use the manufacturer’s current setup guide and official companion app. Products that look similar may have different setup steps and controls. Install the app from the maker’s official listing, and make sure the phone or computer you’ll use to operate the gadget has current software.

Use the manufacturer’s normal onboarding flow to connect the gadget. NIST’s guidance for organizations describes establishing and verifying trust before giving an IoT device network credentials; it does not mean every consumer product uses network attestation. For a home setup, the practical takeaway is to use the authentic app and intended connection process rather than an unverified alternative. NIST SP 1800-36

Secure the account and device credentials

  1. Create or claim the owner account. Choose a unique password that you do not reuse on other services. If the gadget arrived with a default username or password, change it before relying on the device. The FTC advises: “If your device came with a default username and password out of the box, change them.” FTC guidance on securing connected devices and home Wi-Fi
  2. Turn on two-factor authentication if offered. Check the account’s security settings for two-factor or multifactor authentication. A hardware security key is only an option if the specific account supports it; check compatibility before choosing one.
  3. Keep access limited to the right people. If the app offers household sharing or additional users, review who has access and remove people who no longer need it.

NIST’s federal IoT configuration profile treats device setup as an authorized, documented configuration and uses changing default passwords before production as an example. It is guidance for federal systems, not a consumer regulation or a universal product checklist. NIST SP 800-213A

  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

Protect the home Wi-Fi network

  • Change the router’s default administrator credentials.
  • Use Wi-Fi encryption in the router settings, following the router maker’s instructions.
  • Check whether router software or firmware updates are available.
  • If your router supports a guest network, consider using it for devices that do not need access to your main network. You generally do not need to buy new hardware just to follow these steps.

These are part of the FTC’s consumer recommendations for home routers and connected devices. FTC guidance on securing connected devices and home Wi-Fi

Install gadget and app updates

Check for updates to both the gadget’s firmware and its companion app. Follow the manufacturer’s directions, including any instructions about power, restarts, or update order. NIST’s update guidance emphasizes correcting flaws, explaining how critical an update is and when to apply it, and documenting dependencies or possible effects. For a consumer, that means installing available security updates and paying attention to the maker’s instructions. NIST SP 800-40 Rev. 4

Review permissions as feature choices

When the app asks for access to a phone feature or data, ask what function the permission enables. Allow access needed for a feature you intend to use; deny or revoke access that is not necessary for your use. You can revisit the choice if a feature later needs it.

That is a useful decision rule, not a device-specific permission map: a permission’s purpose depends on the app and feature. FTC mobile health app developer guidance

Check privacy controls and switch off what you do not use

Look in the app and device settings for controls over data sharing, remote access, tracking, and voice or video history. Turn off remote management, sensors, sharing, or other features you do not plan to use when the product offers those controls. Menu names and availability differ by maker and model; examples include a camera’s access logs, a TV’s tracking settings, and a voice assistant’s recording controls. The FTC recommends configuring available security features and disabling unused ones. FTC guidance on securing connected devices and home Wi-Fi

Use this checklist when comparing gadgets

Security features are not identical across products, and the cited guidance does not provide model-by-model ratings. Before choosing between gadgets, check the manufacturer’s documentation for the exact model:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Does the maker explain setup and how to change security settings?
  • Can you replace default credentials, and does the account support two-factor authentication?
  • How are firmware updates delivered, and how long does the manufacturer say it will support this model?
  • Can you control permissions, data collection, and sharing?
  • Can you disable remote features you do not need?

The FTC and NIST guidance establish why configuration, authentication, updates, and data controls matter, but support periods and individual features must be verified with the manufacturer for the specific model. FTC connected-device guidance; NIST SP 800-213A; NIST SP 800-40 Rev. 4; FTC mobile health app developer guidance

Keep the setup secure over time

Save the model number and manufacturer support information. Recheck for updates and review privacy and access settings periodically, especially after an app or firmware change. If you change how you use a feature, revisit the permissions it needs rather than leaving every request enabled by default.
