Kodi is free, open-source media-center software. The Kodi Foundation says it does not charge licensing fees to use its product, but it also cautions that copyright, multimedia licensing, and patents are complicated and that it cannot give legal advice. Kodi’s official download notice says, “The official Kodi version does not contain any content whatsoever.” Users supply media from their own storage, discs, or other sources. Kodi allows third-party plugins that may access content freely available from official provider websites, but says that consuming pirated content that would otherwise need to be paid for is not endorsed or approved by Team Kodi. - The application: Kodi itself, ideally obtained from an official source.
- The content: a file, stream, channel, or library. The relevant question is whether its provider is authorized to distribute it and what local law permits.
- The add-on, repository, or build: separate software or a distribution that may connect to a content source, bundle components, or alter Kodi.
A Kodi interface does not make an unauthorized stream authorized. The Foundation’s DMCA policy says it is not responsible for material on third-party websites or in third-party add-ons and repositories outside its official repository. That describes the Foundation’s stated boundary; it is not a court ruling about a user’s conduct.
Does Kodi provide free movies or TV channels?
No. Kodi is a player and media center, not a bundled library of free movies or channels. You can organize and play media you already have, use sources you are entitled to access, or install add-ons. An add-on’s presence in Kodi does not by itself show that the source has rights to distribute its content.
Is Kodi safe to use?
“Safe” depends on where the software comes from and what you install. Kodi recommends obtaining its software through its official download area or official mirrors; it says software from other sites was not offered by Team Kodi as an official release and is not supported as such. Team Kodi says it audits add-ons in its built-in official repository and describes those add-ons as using legitimate sources and not posing a malware risk if installed. That is Kodi’s stated assurance about that repository, not an independent guarantee about every device or every component. Kodi says it does not conduct the same audit of third-party repositories, so users must decide whether they trust their operators and code. Kodi’s distribution policy prohibits certain bundled add-ons and repositories, including those that violate its piracy policy or contain malware, spyware, viruses, or similar unwanted software. Official and third-party sources: what is the difference?

“Third-party” does not automatically mean unlawful or malicious, but it does mean Kodi’s repository audit assurance does not apply. Kodi identifies unusually generous offers of paid movies or television for free as a warning sign; judge the source rather than assuming the add-on is approved because it runs inside Kodi. How should you install Kodi?
- Go to Kodi’s official downloads page: kodi.tv/download. Choose the version for your platform, or follow the relevant official distribution route if you use a Linux distribution.
- Choose the stable release for ordinary use, as Kodi recommends on its download page.
- Start with Kodi’s built-in official repository if you need add-ons, then assess any other repository or add-on separately rather than treating it as endorsed by Kodi.
- Check the content source’s authorization. If a service promises paid TV or movies free, do not assume Kodi’s software makes access lawful.
