Finish the Windows setup prompts shown on your device, connect the accounts you plan to use, install Windows updates, and check Dell’s support page for your exact model. Then choose a file-backup method and review the Dell apps already installed. The screens, available utilities, and touch controls can vary by Windows version, model, and configuration.
1. Finish Windows setup and connect your accounts
Follow the prompts displayed on your laptop to complete Windows setup. The exact screens depend on the Windows version installed and the choices you make, so there is no single click-by-click sequence that applies to every Dell touchscreen laptop.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2. Install Windows and Dell updates
- Open Windows Settings and go to Windows Update. Check for updates and install the updates offered for your device.
- Restart if Windows asks you to, then check Windows Update again. Repeat until no further updates are offered.
- Visit Dell Support and use your laptop’s Service Tag to reach the support page for the exact device. Check its drivers and downloads for model-specific updates that may not be available through Windows Update.
Dell recommends checking both Windows Update and the Dell driver page in its Windows 11 update guidance. These steps help you check for available updates; they do not establish whether a particular laptop is fully up to date.

3. Choose how to protect your files
Cloud sync, a local file-history backup, and system recovery serve different purposes. You can use more than one approach. Before relying on any of them, check what is selected and confirm that the backup or sync has completed.
| Option | What it covers | Practical distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Backup | Selected settings, remembered apps, and preferences tied to your Microsoft account, as described by Dell’s Windows Backup guidance. | Can help carry selected settings and preferences to another Windows device. Review what is enabled rather than assuming everything is included. |
| OneDrive folder backup | Files in the standard folders you select for backup through OneDrive, according to the same Dell guidance. | Selected files can be available across devices through cloud sync. Check the folder selection and verify that syncing is complete. |
| File History on an external drive | File and folder history written to a drive you choose. Dell’s File History instructions note that the feature is off by default. | Creates a local copy on an external drive; it must be turned on and configured. |
| SupportAssist OS Recovery or USB recovery media | System diagnostics, repair, restoration, or a recovery/reinstallation path, as described in Dell’s SupportAssist OS Recovery guidance and OS recovery image instructions. | These options address operating-system or system problems. They are not a substitute for a separate backup of personal files. |
Windows Backup and OneDrive
Use Windows Backup for the settings, app list, and preferences you want associated with your Microsoft account. OneDrive can sync selected folders and their files. Open the relevant backup controls, inspect which items and folders are selected, and confirm sync status before treating the files as protected.

File History to an external drive
If you want a local copy, connect an external drive and turn on File History using Dell’s File History instructions. Choose the destination drive and verify that backup is running. An external hard drive is optional; Dell does not include one as part of this general guidance, and a local copy alone cannot guard against every kind of loss.
Recovery tools and recovery media
SupportAssist OS Recovery can diagnose hardware issues, repair the computer, back up files, or restore factory defaults. Dell also provides a device-customized OS recovery image that can be written to USB media. Consult the SupportAssist OS Recovery instructions and recovery image instructions for the applicable process. A recovery route can help restore a system, but it should not be treated as proof that your personal files have a separate, usable backup.

4. Review the Dell apps on your laptop
Dell identifies SupportAssist, MyDell, Dell Digital Delivery, and Dell Optimizer as common preinstalled apps, but which ones are available depends on the laptop model and configuration. Dell describes their purposes in its overview of apps included with Windows computers.
- SupportAssist: Dell support and diagnostic utility.
- MyDell: Dell’s device app; features depend on the model and configuration.
- Dell Digital Delivery: Used for software purchased with the device when applicable.
- Dell Optimizer: Available on supported configurations; it is not present on every Dell laptop.
Check the Start menu and your device’s Dell support page before installing anything. You do not need to download all four simply because they are common Dell apps.

5. If the touchscreen does not behave as expected
Touch calibration and troubleshooting instructions are not universal across Dell models, and a particular calibration control is not guaranteed to exist on every Windows configuration. If touch is inaccurate or unresponsive, use the Service Tag to open the laptop’s exact Dell support page and consult the relevant Windows settings for that device. Avoid applying instructions written for a different model as though they were universal.
