Ben Simmons’s clearest path to fitting beside Sacramento’s guards is to make himself useful off the ball: give defenders a reason to leave the paint, cut and screen decisively, finish transition chances, and move the ball quickly when help comes. His size could also give the Kings a larger perimeter defender. Those are tactical possibilities, not proof of a fit already tested in games.
Why the fit question is about more than scoring
Sacramento’s 2026–27 roster lists Simmons as a 6-foot-10, 240-pound guard-forward alongside guards including Malik Monk, Zach LaVine, Elfrid Payton, Darius Acuff Jr., Nique Clifford, Tristen Newton, Adam Flagler, and Emanuel Sharp. The roster also includes frontcourt players such as Domantas Sabonis, Keegan Murray, and De’Andre Hunter. With several guards available to create, Simmons’s fit depends on both spacing and how clearly the ball-handling roles are divided. The Kings’ roster names Doug Christie as head coach.

NBA.com lists Simmons’s 2024–25 regular-season averages as 5.0 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 5.6 assists in 22.0 minutes per game, across 51 appearances and 24 starts. That line suggests a potential connective passer as well as a scorer, but it does not show how effective he would be with Sacramento’s current group. NBA.com’s player page is the source for those historical figures.

Make defenders respect him away from the ball
The biggest strategic need is a repeatable scoring threat outside the paint. If a defender can leave Simmons to help on a drive, that defender can crowd the lane for LaVine, Monk, Acuff, or another guard. A credible outside threat would make that help more costly and give the guards more room to attack.

The available material does not establish Simmons’s current shooting percentages, shot chart, or practice results, so it would be premature to assign a specific shooting weakness or predict a particular level of improvement. The practical test is whether opponents choose to stay close to him beyond the paint.
Turn defensive attention into cuts, screens, and finishes
If opponents do help off Simmons, standing still wastes the space they give him. He can cut behind ball-watchers, screen for a guard, seal a smaller defender near the basket, or run ahead in transition. Each action gives the defense another decision and can create a direct route to the rim or an advantage for a teammate.

Those actions depend on timing and reliable finishing. They are recommended ways to use his role, not results established from Kings games.
Pass quickly without taking over the guards’ creation
Simmons’s 5.6 assists per game in 2024–25 point to one possible contribution: handling the ball as a secondary initiator, facilitating in transition, or passing from a short roll after screening. Beside several guards, the key is to make the next read promptly rather than holding the ball in the same areas where they need to create. That role division is a tactical inference from the roster and his recent assist average, not a confirmed rotation plan.

Use his size on defense without overstating the evidence
At his listed height, Simmons could take assignments on larger wings, switch selectively, rebound from the perimeter, and help near the rim when smaller guards are beaten. His size offers a potential way to cover for guards defensively. The cited material does not provide current defensive tracking or matchup figures, however, so assignment range should not be mistaken for demonstrated current impact.
Establish availability and role continuity
The Kings’ team page says Simmons missed the 2025–26 season. That makes availability and sustained time in the lineup essential context for any projection. The same page quotes Christie praising Simmons during camp, but a coach’s positive comment is not evidence of game readiness or a settled role. The available information does not establish a medical cause, recovery timeline, or current readiness level.

Can Ben Simmons play with Malik Monk and Zach LaVine?
In principle, yes: Simmons could complement scoring guards if he creates value without needing to dominate the ball. That means screening and cutting when they initiate, moving the ball when defenses rotate, and providing a larger defensive option. The main potential conflict is spacing: if his defender can ignore him and clog driving lanes, the combination becomes harder to use.
Whether that trade-off works is not established by the roster or Simmons’s past season line. It will depend on his current outside threat, decision speed, defensive execution, and the combinations Christie actually uses.

What to watch once games are available
Judge the fit by possessions and lineups rather than by a camp quote or a single box-score total. Useful signs include:
- Defensive distance: Do opponents guard Simmons outside the paint, or leave him to help on drives?
- Driving room: Do Sacramento’s guards have clear lanes when Simmons shares the floor with them?
- Off-ball impact: Do his cuts and screens create openings, finishes, or defensive rotations?
- Ball movement: When Simmons handles, does he make quick reads without displacing the guards from their creation roles?
- Defense: Which players does he guard, and how do the Kings defend with him on the floor?
- Continuity: Is he available often enough to build and maintain a role?
No current lineup sample or validated figures for these comparisons are established in the cited material. Simmons’s most recent reported season line is from 2024–25, and the Kings say he missed 2025–26; neither should be treated as a forecast of his performance in the coming season.
