Add the folders, then choose File > Save Workspace As… to save the arrangement as a reusable .code-workspace file. Put window-wide settings in that file and keep folder-specific configuration in each root’s .vscode folder.
Create a multi-root workspace
You can add folders to a window using the menu, by dragging folders into Explorer, through the native open dialog, or from the command line. The menu workflow is straightforward when you already have one project open:
- Open a folder in VS Code.
- Choose File > Add Folder to Workspace and select another folder.
- Repeat to add any other related folders. Explorer displays each root separately.
Adding a second folder to a regular folder window creates an untitled workspace. You can work in it immediately, but it is not a saved workspace file until you save it. See the official Multi-root Workspaces guide for the documented ways to add roots.
Save and reopen the workspace
Choose File > Save Workspace As… and save a file with the .code-workspace extension. To reopen it later, double-click the file, use File > Open Workspace, or choose it from File > Open Recent.

A workspace file records its folder roots in a folders array. For example:

}The optional name gives a root a clearer Explorer label. Each path can be relative to the workspace file or absolute. Relative paths are usually more portable if the workspace file and folders move together; absolute paths can suit fixed local folder locations but may not resolve on another computer. Choose where settings belong
Use workspace settings for preferences that should apply across the window, and each folder’s .vscode directory for project-specific resource settings. In a multi-root workspace, folder-level settings are limited to resource settings so one root does not impose a window-wide editor preference on the others. Folder settings can override workspace and user settings; workspace settings override user settings.
- Shared across roots: put workspace settings in the
.code-workspacefile. - Specific to one root: put eligible resource settings in that root’s
.vscodeconfiguration.

Configure debugging and tasks
Debug configurations
Define debug configurations in a root’s .vscode/launch.json or in the workspace file’s launch section. VS Code discovers configurations across roots and displays their folder context. When a configuration needs a path from a particular root, use a scoped variable such as ${workspaceFolder:Product}, where Product is the root name. See Debugging configurations for the documented configuration options.
Tasks
Tasks can live in a root’s .vscode/tasks.json or in the workspace file’s tasks section. Workspace-file task configurations use the shell or process task types; folder task files use version 2.0.0. The multi-root documentation describes the available placement and scope.

Review trust before running project content
Adding a folder to a trusted multi-root workspace can trigger a trust prompt. If the new folder is not trusted, VS Code may put the entire workspace into Restricted Mode. Features that can execute project content—including tasks and debugging—are then disabled or limited. Review unfamiliar project files and scripts before trusting the folder or running its tasks.
