To count tokens in French accurately, encode the exact text with the tokenizer for the model you plan to use, then count the resulting token IDs. There is no reliable universal conversion from French words to tokens: token boundaries depend on each tokenizer’s vocabulary and rules, and special tokens or chat formatting can change the total.
How do I get a token count for French text?
- Identify the model or service. Choose the tokenizer associated with the model whose context limit or usage you need to estimate. A generic French tokenizer may not match it. Hugging Face’s tokenizer documentation describes tokenizers and their associated models.
- Encode the complete text. Pass the exact French text you intend to use to the tokenizer’s encoding method. The encoding returns an ID sequence, commonly called
input_ids; count those IDs for the encoded input. See the Hugging Face API documentation forencodeandinput_ids. - Match the real request’s settings. Check whether special tokens are added. Hugging Face documents
add_special_tokensas enabled by default for the relevant encoding path. If the actual request includes special tokens, a chat template, or other model-specific formatting, count the formatted input rather than raw prose alone. For hosted services, consult that service’s current official guidance for how it formats and accounts for requests. - Record the configuration. For a count you need to reproduce, note the tokenizer or model version, library version, and relevant settings. The tokenizer files, library API, and configuration all matter to the result.
Why French word counts do not predict token counts
Tokenization is not a matter of assigning one token to each French word. Tokenizers use model-specific vocabularies and subword rules; methods include BPE, Unigram, and WordPiece. A common word may stay intact, while a less common form may be split into several pieces. Accents, inflections, punctuation, names, and unusual strings can therefore affect the count for a particular tokenizer. The Transformers overview of tokenization algorithms describes these approaches.

Fast tokenizer implementations can also provide alignment between character or word positions and token positions, which can help show how parts of a French string map to token pieces. That alignment is useful for inspection; for the input count, use the encoded ID sequence. See the Hugging Face Tokenizers Python documentation.

Quick Recap
#1 Best Overall
What a token count does—and does not—tell you
- It is specific to the tokenizer and input. The same French text can produce different counts with different tokenizers.
- It is not a French word-to-token formula. The reviewed official tokenizer documentation does not establish a universal French token-per-word rate or a French-specific benchmark figure.
- It may not equal a hosted service’s final usage count. Raw text and the complete formatted request can differ; verify how the particular service handles its request format and reports usage.
