If your broker has no ETF SIP feature, you can still invest a fixed amount every month: set a recurring reminder, transfer cash before the chosen trading day, and place a delivery buy order for as many whole ETF units as your budget allows. The alternative is moving to a broker whose Stock SIP feature explicitly accepts ETFs, such as the current offerings from Zerodha Kite and Groww. ETF purchases are exchange transactions, not mutual-fund orders, so prices, liquidity, order types, holidays and leftover cash all matter.
What an ETF SIP actually is
“ETF SIP” is commonly used to describe a recurring method of buying an exchange-traded fund. In practice, the ETF order is still submitted to a stock exchange during market hours. Your broker either schedules those orders for you or you submit each one yourself.

The National Stock Exchange (NSE) defines a systematic investment plan (SIP) as a mutual-fund methodology in which a fixed amount is invested at fixed intervals, commonly monthly or quarterly. NSE MF Invest documentation covers registration, payment mandates, cancellation and scheme eligibility for mutual-fund SIPs. That infrastructure should not be assumed to place exchange orders for an ETF.

An index mutual fund may provide similar market exposure, but it is a different product with a different purchase and valuation process. If you choose one instead of an ETF, compare it as a separate investment decision rather than treating it as the same transaction.

Choose between a manual routine and a broker Stock SIP
| Approach | How the purchase happens | What you must manage | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manual monthly order | You place a delivery buy order for whole ETF units each month. | Reminder, cash transfer, order entry, price and execution checks, and record keeping. | You want to stay with your current broker or need order-level control. |
| Broker Stock SIP | The broker schedules recurring ETF orders; supported services may also collect an amount through a mandate. | Instrument eligibility, mandate approval, schedule, cash balance and failed-order rules. | You prefer automation and the broker explicitly lists ETFs as eligible instruments. |
Neither route guarantees that the ETF will trade at a particular price. A scheduled order is an instruction to attempt a market transaction, subject to the broker’s rules, available funds, market liquidity and exchange operation.
Option 1: create a reliable manual monthly ETF routine
This process works with a broker that allows ordinary delivery (cash-market) ETF purchases, even if it has no SIP button.
1. Select and verify the ETF
Decide which ETF matches your intended exposure before setting a date. Confirm its exact ticker, exchange listing and whether your broker supports that exchange. Check the fund’s trading activity and bid-ask spread: a thinly traded ETF can produce a materially different fill from the price you see on a quote screen.

A monthly schedule does not make an unsuitable or illiquid ETF suitable.
2. Pick a trading-day schedule
Choose a date that gives you time to move money into the trading account. A recurring bank reminder is enough; it does not have to be a broker automation. If the date falls on a market holiday, plan to place the order on the next trading day. A reminder set for the last calendar day can also land on a weekend or holiday, so a fixed working-day convention is easier to follow.
3. Fund the account before the order date
Transfer enough cash for at least one whole unit and the applicable brokerage, exchange charges, taxes and other fees. ETF units cannot be bought fractionally in the Indian market. If your monthly budget is ₹5,000 and an illustrative ETF price is ₹425, you can buy 11 units for ₹4,675 before charges; the remaining amount stays as cash rather than becoming a partial unit.

4. Place a delivery buy order
- Open the broker’s order ticket and enter the ETF ticker and the correct exchange.
- Choose Buy and Delivery (the cash-market or delivery product), not an intraday product.
- Enter a whole-unit quantity that fits your available cash.
- Choose the order type. A market order prioritises execution but can fill at a different price from the displayed quote. A limit order lets you set the maximum price you will pay, but it may remain unfilled if the market does not reach that price.
- Review the preview for quantity, estimated value, charges and available balance, then submit.
- Check the order book and trade book to confirm whether the order filled, partially filled or was rejected.
Do not assume that a submitted limit order will execute later without checking the broker’s validity setting. If it expires or remains open, decide whether to cancel it or place a new order rather than accidentally skipping the month.

Keep a simple spreadsheet or note containing the date, units purchased, average fill price, charges, total cash used and leftover balance. This record helps you reconcile statements and see whether your intended monthly amount is being absorbed by whole-unit rounding.
6. Repeat, then review the ETF separately
Repeat the reminder-and-order process each month. Review the ETF periodically for liquidity, spread, tracking difference, costs and whether it still matches your objective. A recurring purchase is not a reason to stop monitoring the product.
NSE investor guidance recommends using a SEBI-registered broker, understanding the product and its risks, and protecting trading credentials. Never share your trading password, PIN or one-time password with a person claiming to place the order for you.
Option 2: use a Stock SIP that explicitly supports ETFs
Broker features change, so confirm the current instrument list, charges and order behaviour inside the app immediately before relying on automation. The following are documented 2026 examples.

An amount-based plan can use UPI Autopay. The mandate authorises recurring collection of the selected amount, after which the broker attempts the scheduled ETF order. A quantity-based plan requires sufficient funds in the broker account; it does not turn a quantity commitment into fractional units.
Zerodha states that fractional share trading is not permitted in India. For an amount-based SIP, the platform therefore rounds down to the nearest whole share and leaves unused cash in the trading account. If the ETF price rises, the same amount may purchase fewer units or no unit at all if the available amount is below one unit plus charges.
Zerodha’s August 7, 2026 product announcement says the updated Kite web experience lets users add stocks, ETFs or bonds directly, select daily, weekly or monthly schedules, choose amount- or quantity-based SIPs, and automate amount-based funding with UPI Autopay. The exact screens can change, so use the labels shown in your current Kite version.
Groww Stock SIP
Groww’s Stock SIP product page advertises automatic investing in stocks and ETFs on weekly or monthly schedules, with fixed-amount or fixed-quantity choices and Autopay. Before creating a plan, verify that the specific ETF is eligible in your account, which exchange is supported, the applicable charges, and what happens after a rejected or partially filled order.
What automation does—and does not—solve
A Stock SIP removes repetitive order entry, but it does not remove ETF-market mechanics. You still face whole-unit rounding, bid-ask spreads, price movement, insufficient funds, exchange holidays and possible order failures. Automation is useful only when you understand the broker’s fallback behaviour and can pause, edit, skip or cancel the plan.
Amount-based versus quantity-based ETF plans
| Plan type | Instruction | Effect when price changes | Cash requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amount-based | Attempt to invest a specified rupee amount. | Whole-unit rounding means the number of units varies; unused cash remains when the amount cannot buy another unit. | At least the selected amount plus applicable charges must be available or successfully collected. |
| Quantity-based | Buy a specified number of ETF units. | The rupee amount varies with the market price. | Sufficient broker-account funds are required on each execution date. |
Choose amount-based scheduling when keeping a roughly constant monthly budget matters more than buying the same number of units. Choose quantity-based scheduling when the unit count is the priority and you can tolerate changing monthly cash requirements. In either case, check the order value before the first few executions.

Dates, holidays and mandate timing
A monthly date is not necessarily an execution date. Zerodha says a scheduled date that is a trading holiday, or the 31st in a month with fewer than 31 days, executes on the next trading day. Other brokers may use a different rule, so read the current help text for the service you choose.
That adjustment can affect your cash planning. Keep the required balance available through the next trading day rather than withdrawing it immediately after the nominal date. If an order fails because of insufficient funds, a rejected mandate or an unavailable instrument, do not assume the broker will retry automatically.
Mandates also need lead time. SEBI- and fund-house terms commonly describe advance mandate registration and next-business-day processing for non-business dates, but the exact approval and debit timing depends on the bank, payment rail and broker. Approve a UPI Autopay or other mandate before the first scheduled instalment and confirm its status in both the payment app and broker account.
Can UPI Autopay automate ETF buying?
UPI Autopay can automate funding only where the broker has integrated it with an ETF-capable Stock SIP. It is not a universal ETF-SIP facility attached to every UPI app or every trading account.
Zerodha’s documentation specifically associates UPI Autopay with amount-based Stock SIPs. Its quantity-based plans require funds to already be available in the broker account. Groww advertises Autopay for its Stock SIP product, but you should verify the eligible ETF, mandate limits, approval time and debit timing in the current app.
If your broker offers UPI Autopay only for mutual-fund SIPs, that does not mean it can submit ETF exchange orders. Ask support a precise question: “Will this mandate schedule a delivery order for this ETF ticker on the exchange, and what happens when the date is a holiday or the order cannot fill?”

What to compare before switching brokers
| Check | Why it matters | Question to verify |
|---|---|---|
| ETF and exchange coverage | A broker may automate stocks but exclude a particular ETF or exchange. | Is my exact ticker eligible, and on which exchange? |
| Amount or quantity mode | The choice determines whether your budget or unit count stays fixed. | Are whole units enforced, and where does unused cash go? |
| UPI Autopay, NACH or other mandate | Approval and debit timing affect the first and later instalments. | What mandate limits, lead time and failure messages apply? |
| Holiday and month-end rule | Execution may move from the chosen date. | Does the order move to the next trading day, and is 31 handled specially? |
| Order type and price control | Market orders prioritise execution; limit orders control price but can remain open. | Can the SIP use a limit price, or only a market order? |
| Charges and taxes | Brokerage, statutory charges, platform fees and taxes reduce the amount invested. | What is charged per scheduled order and when is it debited? |
| Liquidity and spread | A low-volume ETF can have wider execution costs. | How does the broker display bid, ask and available depth? |
| Controls | You need to respond to changing finances or an unsuitable ETF. | Can you pause, skip, edit, cancel and restart without recreating the account? |
| Failure handling | An unsuccessful order can silently break a monthly plan. | Is there an automatic retry, notification or manual-recovery step? |
Do not switch solely for a “SIP” label. Compare the complete operating process and total charges with the effort of setting one reliable monthly reminder at your existing broker.
How to decide whether switching is worthwhile
Stay with the current broker when
- You can fund the account reliably before a chosen trading day.
- You want to choose market or limit orders yourself.
- Your ETF is liquid and the manual order takes only a few minutes.
- The available Stock SIP alternatives have unclear ETF coverage, higher charges or weak cancellation controls.
Consider a Stock SIP broker when
- You frequently miss manual dates or want a scheduled amount collection.
- The broker explicitly lists your ETF and exchange as eligible.
- You understand whole-unit rounding and can keep enough funds available.
- The service provides clear holiday, failure, notification and cancellation behaviour.
There is no authoritative statistic showing that one method produces better ETF returns or that one broker has a universally superior success rate. The investment result still depends on the ETF, price, costs, tracking and how consistently the orders execute.
Troubleshooting common problems
The scheduled date passed and no units appeared
Check whether the date was a market holiday or a short-month 31st, then inspect the order book, mandate status and available balance. Look for a rejected order rather than assuming it moved automatically. If the broker’s stated retry window has passed, place a manual delivery order only after confirming that no duplicate order is pending.
The amount plan bought fewer units than expected
Whole-unit rounding, a higher ETF price, charges or a conservative available-balance calculation can all reduce the quantity. Review the fill value and leftover cash. Do not attempt to force a fractional unit; fractional ETF trading is not permitted in India according to Zerodha’s Stock SIP documentation.
The limit order did not fill
A limit order executes only at the limit price or better. Check whether it is still open, expired or cancelled. You can revise the limit or use a market order if execution is more important than price control, but make that choice consciously.
UPI Autopay was not approved or debited
Confirm that the mandate was approved in the payment app, that its amount and validity cover the instalment, and that the linked bank account had sufficient funds. If the mandate is active but the ETF order failed, treat funding and order execution as separate issues and read the broker’s failure message.
The ETF is suddenly unavailable
Do not replace it automatically with a different ticker. Check whether the instrument was temporarily blocked, moved to another exchange segment or removed from the Stock SIP list. Decide separately whether an alternative ETF provides comparable exposure, liquidity and costs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA practical monthly checklist
- Confirm the ETF ticker, exchange and current liquidity.
- Check the next trading day and keep cash available through any holiday adjustment.
- Verify the whole-unit quantity and estimated charges.
- For automation, confirm the mandate and Stock SIP status before the first instalment.
- After execution, check the trade book for quantity, fill price and charges.
- Record leftover cash and investigate any rejection immediately.
- Review the ETF and the broker’s rules periodically rather than letting an old schedule run unattended.
- Protect passwords, PINs and one-time passwords, and use a SEBI-registered broker.
Bottom line
A broker without ETF automation does not prevent disciplined monthly investing. A recurring reminder plus a delivery order is a workable method when you accept manual execution and whole-unit purchases. If you want automation, use a Stock SIP service only after confirming that it explicitly supports your ETF, explaining amount-versus-quantity behaviour, holiday treatment, mandate timing, charges and failure recovery. Mutual-fund SIP registration and ETF exchange orders are separate mechanisms; choosing one should be an informed product decision, not a naming assumption.
