The reliable way to host a modded Minecraft server with AMP is to match the VPS, Java runtime, Minecraft release, and mod loader before you upload anything. What AMP does on a VPS
AMP is a self-hosted control panel for Linux and Windows game servers. For Minecraft, it can create instances, expose a browser file manager and SFTP access, start and stop servers, install or update supported mods and plugins, and schedule maintenance and backups. The panel runs separately from the Minecraft process, so its listening port and the game port must be configured and protected independently.
A VPS gives you an always-on public machine, but it also makes you responsible for operating-system updates, firewall policy, credentials, storage, and recovery. Modded servers are usually more sensitive to single-core CPU performance and storage latency than vanilla servers. Choose hardware from the pack’s documentation and observed tick performance rather than from a generic vanilla recommendation.

Plan the VPS before installing AMP
Size for the modpack and player load
There is no universal RAM figure for a modded server. A lightweight pack with a few players and a large exploration pack with dozens of concurrent players can have radically different requirements. Use the pack author’s server guidance as the starting point, then leave headroom for the operating system, AMP, world generation, scheduled jobs, and temporary Java allocations.
- CPU: prioritize strong single-core performance and enough additional cores for background tasks. CPU scarcity is a common cause of modded tick delays.
- Memory: allocate enough for the loader, mods, world size, and peak player count without exhausting the VPS. Do not assign every available gigabyte to Java.
- Storage: prefer fast SSD or NVMe storage. Chunk generation, region saves, backups, and modded machines can create substantial disk I/O.
- Network: check monthly transfer limits, inbound and outbound rates, and the server location relative to players.
- Policy: confirm that the provider permits game servers and automated backup traffic under its acceptable-use rules.
Compare VPS offers on those characteristics, not just advertised vCPU and RAM totals. A smaller plan with faster cores and storage can outperform a larger, oversubscribed plan for the same pack.

Create an administrative account
Deploy a current Linux distribution supported by your chosen AMP installer. Log in through the provider’s console or SSH, create a non-root administrative account, grant it the required administrative privileges, and use that account for routine work. Apply operating-system security updates before exposing services to the internet.
Enable both layers of firewall protection: the VPS provider’s network firewall and the operating system firewall. Keep SSH restricted to trusted addresses where possible. The AMP web port should also be limited to your own addresses or made reachable through a VPN rather than exposed to every internet client.
Choose the correct Java runtime
Minecraft Java Edition requires a compatible Java Runtime Environment to launch its server JAR. The Minecraft version and the loader determine which Java major version is valid; installing the newest Java package without checking the pack can produce an immediate exit or a class-version error.

The table is a useful baseline, not a substitute for the pack’s own instructions. Some loaders or older releases have narrower requirements. Install the required runtime, then verify the binary AMP will use:

Install AMP and secure the panel
Run the Linux installer
- Download the current Linux installer from the official CubeCoders distribution channel using a trusted administrative session.
- Run the installer and follow its prompts for the service account, installation directory, and initial administrator credentials.
- Complete AMP’s first-run wizard. It will report the address to use for the web interface and start its own web server.
- Open the panel from a trusted workstation and change any temporary or default credentials immediately.
- Record the panel URL, panel port, service account, and installation path in your operations notes.
AMP commonly uses TCP port 8080 for its web panel, but the installer or an existing configuration may use another value. Treat the value shown by your installation as authoritative. Permit it in the provider and operating-system firewalls only for the addresses that need administration. If remote administration is required, put the panel behind HTTPS termination, an IP allow-list, or a VPN appropriate to your environment.
Do not confuse the panel with the game service
Opening the AMP port does not make Minecraft reachable, and opening the Minecraft port does not make the panel reachable. The panel is an administration surface; the game listener is the service players use. Keep their firewall rules, DNS records, and troubleshooting checks separate.
Create the Minecraft instance in AMP
- Sign in to AMP and choose the option to create a new Minecraft Java instance.
- In the Minecraft Server Settings screen, select the exact Minecraft release required by the pack.
- Choose the matching server type: Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, Paper, Spigot, or Official. Do not select a loader merely because it appears in the client launcher.
- Assign a unique game port if this VPS will host more than one instance. The commonly used Java port is TCP 25565, but the value configured in AMP is the one players must use.
- Leave remote-VPS LAN visibility disabled. LAN discovery is for local networks and does not replace a public address or DNS name.
- Save the instance and start it once. This creates the initial server files, including
eula.txtandserver.properties.
After the base server has booted, set the MOTD, whitelist, operator permissions, difficulty, view distance, simulation distance, and player cap. Apply conservative view and simulation distances first; large values increase CPU and memory pressure, especially while several players explore new terrain.

Use a dedicated server pack, not a client archive
The safest modpack source is the pack author’s dedicated server pack. A client download can contain launcher metadata, client-only mods, or no server libraries at all. It may start locally while failing on a headless VPS. If AMP’s catalog includes the pack, its installer can be convenient, but verify the resulting Minecraft version, loader version, mod versions, and configuration against the pack’s release notes.
Prepare the files
- Download the server pack that corresponds to the client release players will run.
- Read its installation notes for required Java, loader, startup scripts, environment variables, and one-time installers.
- Keep the archive intact until you have verified its contents and checksum where the publisher provides one.
- Identify the instance directory AMP created; upload into that directory rather than into AMP’s global installation directory.
Upload with AMP or SFTP
- Stop the AMP instance before replacing or extracting files.
- Use AMP’s integrated file manager or an SFTP client with the instance account.
- Upload the dedicated server archive and extract it in the instance directory, preserving the directory structure.
- Confirm that directories such as
mods, configuration folders, libraries, scripts, and loader files are at the level expected by the server startup process, not one directory deeper because of an archive wrapper folder. - Preserve file names and permissions. If the pack includes a launcher script, inspect it for paths that assume a desktop environment and adapt only the documented server settings.
- Remove client-only files only when the pack documentation identifies them as unnecessary. Do not guess which dependency a mod requires.
Fabric’s guidance recommends testing the client mods first, then making the server list agree with the client list. Every required server-side mod and dependency must be present at a compatible version. Client-only visual or interface mods may be excluded when the pack author says they are client-only; otherwise, treat a missing file as a dependency problem rather than deleting it.
Accept the EULA and complete first launch
On the first start, Minecraft normally stops after creating eula.txt. Open that file in the AMP instance directory, read the Minecraft EULA, change eula=false to eula=true, save it, and start the instance again. The file must be in the directory AMP is actually launching; editing a similarly named file elsewhere has no effect.
Set the game port and gameplay properties either through AMP’s settings interface or in the generated server.properties. Restart after changes that the server reads only at launch. Watch the console until it reports that the server is listening and has finished loading the world before testing with a player account.

Game port
Allow the configured Minecraft TCP port through both the provider firewall and the VPS operating-system firewall. TCP 25565 is a common default, not a requirement. If AMP assigned 25570, for example, players must connect to that port and the firewall must allow that port instead.

AMP panel port
Allow the panel’s configured port, commonly 8080, only from administrative IP addresses or through the VPN path you use. Never assume that a working game connection proves the panel is correctly protected.
Connection test
- Confirm that the instance is running and that its console shows the expected listening port.
- Check the provider firewall rule, then the operating-system firewall rule.
- Resolve the DNS name, if used, and confirm it points to the VPS public address.
- Connect from outside the VPS network using the public IP or DNS name plus the configured game port.
- If the connection fails, test from a second network to rule out a local network restriction.
Do not expose administrative services such as SSH or the panel more broadly than necessary. Use strong, unique credentials and keep AMP and the operating system updated.

World data changes constantly, and a loader or mod update can make an otherwise healthy world unusable. AMP includes scheduled backups and backup exclusions, which lets you automate protection without copying every regenerable cache.
Build a practical backup schedule
- Open the AMP scheduler for the Minecraft instance.
- Create a recurring backup during a period of low activity. Coordinate it with automatic restarts if the pack requires a quiescent filesystem for consistent snapshots.
- Exclude caches and other files that can be regenerated, but never exclude the world, player data, configuration, scripts, or custom dimensions you would need to restore the server.
- Retain several restore points rather than only the newest archive. Keep at least one point from before each planned loader, Minecraft, or mod change.
- Copy important archives to storage outside the VPS. A backup stored on the same virtual disk does not protect against disk loss, account failure, or an accidental deletion.
- Perform a test restore on a stopped, separate instance. A backup is not operationally useful until you know it can be opened and the world loads.
Back up before changing the Minecraft release, Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, configuration files, or major mods. Label archives with the date, Minecraft version, loader version, and pack release so you can select a compatible restore point quickly.
Operate and update the server safely
Use a staged update process
- Read the pack and loader release notes for required Java and migration steps.
- Take an AMP backup and copy it off the VPS.
- Clone or restore the current world to a test instance when the change is significant.
- Update the loader and mods as a compatible set, not one arbitrary JAR at a time.
- Start the test instance, inspect the console, and join with a client using the matching pack.
- Schedule a maintenance window, stop the production instance cleanly, apply the tested files, and restart.
- Keep the previous files and backup until players have confirmed that the world and key machines work.
Control access
Use a whitelist for private servers, grant operator status only to trusted accounts, and keep player permissions separate from the AMP administrator account. Document who can access the panel, where backups are stored, and how to revoke access when a collaborator leaves.
Forge, Fabric, and NeoForge: what to compare
The correct loader is determined by the modpack, not by a general performance ranking. Forge and NeoForge packs have their own dependency and installer expectations; Fabric packs use Fabric Loader and often Fabric API. A pack built for one loader is not converted by selecting another loader in AMP.

For a choice between VPS plans, compare single-core CPU performance, RAM headroom, NVMe or SSD I/O, network egress, location and latency, snapshot or backup options, and acceptable-use policy. For AMP editions, compare the current licensing page’s instance limits and management features against the number of servers you will operate; those limits can change, so verify them at purchase time.
Troubleshoot the failures that matter most
The process exits immediately or reports a class-version error
Run java -version in the same environment AMP uses and compare it with the Minecraft and loader requirements. A shell may find one Java binary while the AMP service uses another. Correct the instance’s Java selection, then restart rather than changing random JVM flags.
The console reports missing mods or dependencies
Compare the dedicated server pack with the client pack and verify the Minecraft release, loader build, mod versions, and required libraries. Re-upload the pack if extraction created an extra directory level. Do not download a similarly named JAR from an unrelated release.
The server says the EULA is not accepted
Open the instance directory shown by AMP and confirm that its eula.txt contains eula=true. If AMP launches a different instance than the one you edited, the change will not be detected.

Check the game port in AMP, the port in server.properties, the provider firewall, the operating-system firewall, DNS, and the server’s listening address. Remember that the panel port is not the game port. Test with the public address from a network outside the VPS.
The server lags or triggers watchdog timeouts
Inspect CPU saturation and disk I/O first. Modded workloads are often CPU-bound, and chunk generation or world saves can expose storage limits. Reduce view or simulation distance, stop competing jobs, or move to faster CPU and storage before experimenting with Java flags. Measure tick time after each change.
A world is corrupted after an update
Stop the instance immediately to prevent further writes. Restore the newest known-good AMP backup to a separate test instance, confirm that it opens with the matching Minecraft and loader versions, and then replace production only after verification. If the backup is incompatible with the new loader, roll back the loader and mods to the versions recorded with that backup.
