In Minecraft, dolphins are not tameable pets, but feeding one raw cod or raw salmon can make it lead you toward the nearest buried treasure, shipwreck or ocean ruin. Search any ocean that is not frozen, approach without attacking, feed the dolphin, and follow its direction. The reward can include buried treasure, whose chest always contains a Heart of the Sea—the only item that can be used to craft a Conduit.

What dolphins do in Minecraft
A dolphin is best understood as a temporary guide rather than an animal you can permanently tame. When you feed it an accepted fish, it searches for an underwater point of interest and swims toward the nearest buried treasure, shipwreck or ocean ruin. You must follow it through the water; the dolphin does not hand you a map or place a marker on your screen.

That item cannot be crafted or traded, and buried treasure is its only source. A Heart of the Sea is required for a Conduit, so a successful dolphin search can provide the key component for a powerful underwater base or exploration setup.
Feeding also increases the dolphin’s trust. The amount you feed affects how much that trust changes, although no fixed trust scale is established in the available game references. Trust and treasure-leading are related but not identical: a dolphin can stop moving toward a destination, in which case feeding it again is the recommended recovery step.

Quick method: the complete treasure hunt
- Locate a dolphin. Search an ocean biome that is not frozen. Frozen ocean and deep frozen ocean are the documented exceptions.
- Carry raw cod or raw salmon. These are the two feeding items consistently identified by the Minecraft Wiki and the official Minecraft inventory guide.
- Approach carefully. Do not strike the dolphin. Harming one without killing it in a single blow makes the entire pod retaliate.
- Feed the dolphin. Use the raw fish on it until the feeding interaction completes.
- Follow its route. It should swim toward a nearby buried treasure location, shipwreck or ocean ruin.
- Feed again if it stops. The achievement guidance recommends repeating the feeding interaction until the dolphin leads you to an ocean ruin or shipwreck.
- Search the destination. Look for the relevant structure or a buried treasure chest rather than expecting the dolphin to open a chest for you.
- Leave the dolphin unharmed. A hostile pod remains hostile even if you feed its members afterward.
Where to find dolphins
Ocean biomes that qualify
Dolphins spawn in any ocean that is not frozen. This broad rule is the safest way to choose a search area because it includes more than one named ocean type. Frozen ocean and deep frozen ocean are the stated exceptions, so searching there is not a reliable way to find a pod.
Some fan guides provide narrower biome lists, naming only Ocean, Warm Ocean and Lukewarm Ocean. That conflicts with the broader Minecraft Wiki description. Treat the non-frozen-ocean rule as the general guidance, and verify behavior in the edition and version you are currently playing if a particular biome produces no dolphins.
How to search efficiently
- Start in an open-water area where you can see and swim around the surface easily.
- Check several non-frozen ocean regions instead of assuming one named biome is required.
- Once you see a pod, keep the raw fish on your active hotbar slot so you can feed without losing sight of the animals.
- Do not attack a dolphin to make it move. Damage triggers a pod-wide counterattack and can ruin the search.
No reliable pod-size statistic is established here. One fan source claims groups of three to five, but that figure should not be treated as a guaranteed spawn count.
Which fish should you feed?

Use raw cod or raw salmon when you want the most dependable method. The conflicting tropical-fish and pufferfish claims are not strong enough to make those items part of a guaranteed procedure. If an item does not trigger the feeding interaction in your version, switch to raw cod or raw salmon rather than assuming the dolphin is bugged.
The available references do not establish a required quantity. Feed one fish, watch for the dolphin to react, and keep additional raw fish available in case it stops before reaching a structure.

Step-by-step: feed and follow a dolphin
1. Prepare before entering the water
Bring raw cod or raw salmon and make sure you can remain in the water long enough to follow a moving animal. The dolphin’s route may take you away from the point where you first found it, so avoid beginning the interaction if you are about to leave the area. Keep enough inventory space to collect anything found at the destination.

Hold the raw fish and swim close to the dolphin. Move slowly and keep the animal in view. The objective is to complete the feeding interaction, not to collide with or damage it. A missed interaction simply means you need to reposition and try again.
3. Feed the dolphin
Use the game’s normal interact control while holding raw cod or raw salmon. Feeding raises the dolphin’s trust, and the amount fed changes the trust increase. The dolphin should then begin traveling toward an underwater point of interest.
4. Follow rather than swim ahead
Stay behind or beside the dolphin and watch the direction it chooses. Because it is seeking the nearest buried treasure, shipwreck or ocean ruin, its destination may not be the location you expected. Swimming far ahead can make you lose the pod and removes the visual cue that tells you where to search.
5. Inspect the destination
When the dolphin slows or reaches a structure, search the surrounding seafloor and nearby blocks. A dolphin is a guide, not a mining tool: it does not excavate buried treasure or open containers. For a buried treasure target, you still have to locate and uncover the chest yourself.

What to do when the dolphin stops
A stopped dolphin does not necessarily mean the hunt has failed. The Minecraft Wiki achievement guidance specifically recommends feeding it again until it leads you to an ocean ruin or shipwreck. Return close to the dolphin, use another raw cod or raw salmon, and resume following when it swims away.
- It never reacts: Confirm that you are holding raw cod or raw salmon, not one of the disputed fish listed by some fan guides.
- It swims only a short distance: Feed it again, then follow from close range rather than breaking away to explore on your own.
- You lose sight of it: Retrace the last direction, locate the pod, and restart the interaction. Do not attack nearby dolphins to make them noticeable.
- The pod attacks: You probably damaged a dolphin without killing it in one blow. Feeding afterward does not remove the hostility; retreat and avoid that pod.
Where the dolphin can lead you
Buried treasure
Buried treasure is one of the three documented target types. A buried treasure chest always contains a Heart of the Sea. The official Minecraft “Taking Inventory” article describes two routes to these chests: follow a buried-treasure map obtained from a shipwreck or ocean ruin to its red X, or befriend a dolphin with raw cod or raw salmon and let it guide you.
The dolphin does not replace the digging step. Once it reaches the area, inspect the nearby terrain and search for the chest. If you break a chest, the dolphin looks for a new structure with an intact chest. That behavior explains why a dolphin may begin moving again after you have destroyed a chest.
Shipwrecks
A shipwreck is another valid destination. It can also be the place where you obtain a buried-treasure map, giving you a second route to a chest: use the map’s red X rather than asking the dolphin to search again immediately.

Ocean ruins
Ocean ruins are the third documented target. The achievement guidance refers to feeding the dolphin again until it leads to ocean ruins or a shipwreck, so a second feeding attempt can be worthwhile when the first route ends without an obvious chest.

Why the Heart of the Sea is the real prize
Every buried treasure chest contains a Heart of the Sea. Buried treasure is the only source of this item, and it cannot be crafted or traded. The Heart of the Sea is used to craft a Conduit, making dolphin-led treasure hunting the dependable way to obtain the ingredient.
Do not treat every dolphin destination as an automatic Heart of the Sea reward. The guarantee applies to a buried treasure chest, not generally to every shipwreck or ocean ruin container. If the dolphin guides you to a shipwreck or ruin, search it for a map or other loot and decide whether to follow a map’s red X for the guaranteed buried-treasure chest.
Safety: never attack a dolphin
Dolphins have a special pod defense. If you attack one and fail to kill it in a single blow, the pod counterattacks. The affected dolphins remain hostile even after you feed them, so the normal trust-building interaction will not reset their behavior.
- Keep weapons away while approaching a pod.
- Avoid swinging at hostile mobs while dolphins are within reach.
- If you accidentally strike one, leave the area instead of trying to repair the relationship with fish.
- Choose another pod if the original group becomes hostile.
This is both a survival precaution and a practical one: a hostile pod cannot serve as a dependable guide during the same encounter.
Java and Bedrock edition notes
Historical behavior
Dolphins were added in the 2018 Update Aquatic. Java Edition 1.13 introduced the fish-leading behavior and the Dolphin’s Grace effect. Bedrock Edition 1.4.0 introduced the Heart of the Sea, initially without a use until a Conduit recipe was planned.
Achievement differences
A Bedrock search-result listing describes an “Echolocation” achievement earned by feeding a befriended dolphin a raw fish so it leads you to an underwater structure. The listing was not verified against the full achievement page, so treat the achievement name and trigger as version-sensitive. No Java equivalent was confirmed in the available references.
Verify your current version
Names, achievements and exact dolphin behavior can change between Java and Bedrock releases. The core procedure—find a dolphin in a non-frozen ocean and use raw cod or raw salmon—is the most consistently documented part. If your game does not react as described, check the current edition’s in-game achievement list and official release notes before assuming the world or seed is defective.

“Can I tame a dolphin permanently?”
Not in the same sense as a conventional tameable animal. Feeding increases trust and enables guiding behavior, but the documented interaction is a temporary treasure-finding partnership rather than permanent ownership.
“Will every dolphin lead me directly to a Heart of the Sea?”
No. Dolphins can lead to buried treasure, shipwrecks or ocean ruins. The Heart of the Sea guarantee belongs specifically to buried treasure chests.
“Can I use any fish?”
Raw cod and raw salmon are the reliable choices. Tropical fish and pufferfish appear in some fan guides, but that broader list conflicts with the Minecraft Wiki and is not established as universal behavior.
“What if I open the chest?”
The documented behavior concerns breaking a chest: after a chest is broken, the dolphin searches for a new structure with an intact chest. If you merely inspect a destination, continue searching the area before assuming the hunt is over.
