What you need before installing Fabric
A Fabric server is a Java Edition Minecraft server that uses Fabric Loader to load mods. Fabric is not a separate edition of Minecraft: the server, each player’s client, every mod, the Fabric Loader line and Java must all be compatible with the same Minecraft release.

- A Minecraft Java Edition version selected in advance.
- A compatible Java runtime installed on the server computer.
- The executable Fabric Server Launcher for that Minecraft and loader version.
- A dedicated folder where the server can create its files.
- Matching client and server mod files, including Fabric API when a mod requires it.
- Permission to run Java and, if friends will connect remotely, access to the router and firewall.
Do not begin by downloading random mods and then choosing a Minecraft version around them. The version determines the compatible Fabric Loader and Java requirement, so select the game release first and obtain every other component for it.
Choose the Minecraft version and Java runtime
Fabric’s current version guidance is divided at Minecraft 1.20.5. This is compatibility guidance, not a performance benchmark or a guarantee that every mod supports every patch.

| Minecraft version | Fabric Java guidance | Compatibility check |
|---|---|---|
| 1.17 through 1.20.4 | Java 17 | Use a Fabric Loader and mods released for the exact Minecraft version or patch they document. |
| 1.20.5 and newer | Java 21 | Confirm that the selected loader and every mod supports that exact Minecraft release. |
Fabric’s 2026 documentation gives these Java boundaries. A mod that works on one Minecraft patch may fail on another, even when both patches are in the same broad release family. Treat a loader or mod download page’s Minecraft-version label as a requirement, not a suggestion.
Check the Java installation
After installing the required Java runtime, open a terminal, PowerShell window or Command Prompt and run:
java -version
The output should identify Java 17 for a 1.17–1.20.4 server or Java 21 for a 1.20.5-or-newer server. If the command is not found, install Java and reopen the terminal. If several Java versions are installed, make sure the java command used by your shell points to the required one; otherwise the launcher may start with an incompatible runtime.
Create a dedicated server folder
Create a new folder used only for this server, such as Minecraft-Fabric-Server. Keeping the launcher, configuration, world, libraries and mods together makes backups and migrations easier and prevents files from being mixed with a vanilla installation.
Download the executable Fabric Server Launcher for the Minecraft and Fabric versions you selected. Fabric describes this launcher as an executable JAR that downloads missing Fabric Loader and Minecraft files, then continues by running the game server. The launcher is therefore the main server entry point; you do not need to rename it to the vanilla server JAR.
Place the launcher JAR in the dedicated folder. On a headless machine or a managed host, the same JAR can be used from a start script or control panel. Keep the filename visible because it will be used in the start command.

Run Fabric once and complete initialization
Open a terminal in the server folder. The usual headless command is:
java -Xmx2G -jar <fabric-server-launcher-jar-file-name> nogui
Replace the bracketed text with the actual launcher filename. The -Xmx2G value is the example used in Fabric’s guidance; it is not a universal memory recommendation. Hardware, player count and mod load determine whether a different setting is appropriate, and no single RAM figure is guaranteed for every server.
On the first run, the launcher downloads the files it needs and creates the normal server structure. Minecraft will stop with an EULA prompt. Read the license, then open the generated eula.txt and change the acceptance line as instructed by the server, typically from eula=false to eula=true. Save the file and run the same command again.
Let the second startup finish generating the world, server.properties, the libraries directory and other files. Stop the server from its console with:
stop
Stopping cleanly lets Minecraft save the world. Restart it after making configuration changes so the server reads the new settings.
Configure server.properties before inviting anyone
The generated server.properties file is a plain-text configuration file. Open it with a text editor while the server is stopped. Fabric’s manual-server guidance identifies this file, the launcher, server.jar and the libraries directory as the files that must be present when transferring the installation to a remote host.

Property names and values are separated by an equals sign, with one setting per line. Preserve the file’s spelling and avoid adding quotation marks unless the setting documentation calls for them. Make a backup copy before experimenting.
Install Fabric mods correctly
With the server stopped, create or open the server’s mods folder and place compatible server mod JARs inside it. Fabric notes that most mods require Fabric API, so add the Fabric API release that supports your exact Minecraft version and loader line when a mod lists it as a dependency.

Every mod must match the server’s complete environment:
- The exact Minecraft version or patch named by the mod author.
- The Fabric Loader version range required by the mod.
- The Java major version used by the server.
- Any dependency such as Fabric API or another library mod.
- The correct side: server, client or both.
Many gameplay mods need a copy on the server and on every connecting client. Some interface, graphics or key-binding mods are client-only. Do not copy a client-only mod to a dedicated server when its documentation says it cannot run there. Conversely, a server-required gameplay mod must be installed by each player if the project specifies a client component.
Keep the client and server mod sets synchronized
Give players a precise mod list containing filenames and versions, not merely a list of project names. A single outdated JAR can cause a missing-mod, incompatible-version or registry error during login. Remove duplicate versions of the same mod from the mods folder, and change one variable at a time when diagnosing a failed launch.
When the server reports a dependency or version error, read the first error that identifies a mod or required version. Download the matching release, update the corresponding client copy, and restart the server. Do not solve a dependency error by replacing the entire mod folder with unrelated newer files.

Start the server reliably
For a repeatable launch, put the command in a script in the server folder. A Windows batch file can contain:
java -Xmx2G -jar <fabric-server-launcher-jar-file-name> nogui
pause
On Linux or another Unix-like system, a shell script can contain:
#!/bin/sh
java -Xmx2G -jar <fabric-server-launcher-jar-file-name> nogui
Replace the placeholder with the real filename and make the Unix script executable. Keep the terminal attached while testing so you can read startup errors. For unattended operation, use the operating system’s service or task facility, but preserve a clean shutdown path and a known working backup before making the service automatic.

Test locally before opening remote access
- Start the server and wait until its console reports that it has finished loading.
- Launch Minecraft Java Edition on the host computer with the same Minecraft version, Fabric Loader line and client mod set.
- Connect using the host’s local address or the local connection option available in your network. Do not test with the public address first.
- Join the world, move around, place and break blocks, and verify that the expected mods load.
- Stop the server cleanly and inspect the console for errors before inviting another player.
A successful local connection proves that the Java process, world and mod set work together. It does not prove that a router, firewall or internet service provider will allow outside connections; that is a separate networking step.
Let friends join from outside your home network
Mojang’s networking guidance says to forward the port listed in server.properties; the default is 25565. Router menus differ by manufacturer, so use the router’s port-forwarding section and create a rule that sends the selected TCP/UDP game traffic to the local IP address of the computer running the server. If you changed the port, forward the changed value rather than 25565.
- Give the server computer a stable local address, using a DHCP reservation or a static configuration so the forwarding rule does not point to a different device later.
- Allow the Java process or the chosen server port through the host operating system’s firewall.
- Create the router forwarding rule for the exact port in
server.properties, targeting the server computer’s local address. - Start the server and have a friend connect using your public address and port. People on the same home network should use the local address instead.
- If the connection fails, verify the server is running, the port value matches in all three places, and the firewall rule applies to the active network profile.
Do not publish your public address more widely than necessary. A whitelist provides an additional account-level gate even when the port is reachable.

Use the whitelist for a private group
Enable the whitelist in server.properties, restart if required, and add intended players from the server console with the whitelist commands supported by that Minecraft release. Keep the list current when someone should lose access. A whitelist does not replace software updates, backups or a firewall; it limits which authenticated accounts may join after they reach the server.

Choose between self-hosting and managed hosting
A computer at home gives you direct control, while managed Minecraft server hosting moves the always-on machine and much of the networking work to a provider. Fabric’s launcher can be used as a drop-in replacement for a vanilla server JAR in Minecraft-specific hosts, admin panels and start scripts. Upload the complete installation files and choose the host’s Java setting for the selected Minecraft version.
| Consideration | Local self-hosting | Managed hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Uptime | Depends on your computer, power, internet connection and whether it stays on. | Usually designed for continuous operation, subject to the provider’s service terms. |
| File and mod control | Direct access to the launcher, world, configuration, libraries and mods. | Control depends on the panel’s file manager, upload limits and supported Java settings. |
| Router and firewall work | You must configure local firewall rules and port forwarding for outside players. | The provider generally supplies a reachable address; you still configure the server and any panel permissions. |
| Recurring cost | No hosting subscription, but you provide hardware, electricity, storage and internet capacity. | A recurring hosting charge; pricing, renewal terms and included resources vary by provider and location. |
| Backups | You are responsible for copying worlds and configuration to separate storage. | Backup tools may be included, but verify retention, restore access and whether backups cover worlds and mods. |
| Player geography and latency | Latency is tied to the home connection and its distance from players. | Selecting a geographically suitable data center can reduce distance for the group, subject to the host’s available regions. |
For a small occasional world, local hosting may be sufficient if the owner can leave the machine available and configure the router. If players need access while the owner is away, or port forwarding is unavailable, managed hosting removes those particular constraints but adds a recurring service relationship.
Executable launcher versus a manual installation
| Aspect | Executable Fabric Server Launcher | Manual installation approach |
|---|---|---|
| Initial setup | Run one executable JAR with Java and let it obtain missing Fabric and Minecraft files. | Obtain and place the required server, loader and library files yourself according to the chosen installation procedure. |
| Automation | Downloads missing files during the first launch. | More hands-on; you can see and manage each downloaded component directly. |
| Generated files | Created in the dedicated folder after the first run. | File layout is explicit from the start, which can help scripted deployments. |
| Headless or hosted use | Works in a terminal, start script, admin panel or Minecraft-specific host as a vanilla-JAR replacement. | Useful when a platform requires a particular file layout or you need granular control over deployment. |
| Migration | Copy the launcher, server.properties, server.jar and libraries directory, along with your world and mods. |
Copy the same required runtime files plus any components your manual procedure created. |
For most first-time administrators, the executable launcher is the shortest path to a working server. A manual layout can be preferable when an existing script or host expects individually managed files, but it does not remove the need to match Minecraft, Fabric, Java and mods.
Back up, update and recover safely
Back up the world and configuration
Stop the server before copying the world directory, server.properties, whitelist and operator files, the mods folder, the Fabric launcher and the libraries directory. Store at least one copy outside the server computer. A backup that exists only on the same disk does not protect against disk failure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUpdate one compatibility layer at a time
Before changing Minecraft, Fabric Loader, Java or a major mod, copy the complete working installation. Change one layer, launch, and test locally. Then update the client files to the same environment. If the server fails, restore the backup instead of mixing files from two different versions.
Read logs instead of guessing
Keep the first lines that identify the Java version, Minecraft version, Fabric Loader and the first mod named in an error. Common causes include running Java 17 with a 1.20.5-or-newer server, a mod built for another Minecraft patch, a missing Fabric API dependency, a client-only mod on the dedicated server, or a client and server mod list that no longer matches.
Quick Recap
Troubleshooting by symptom
The launcher will not start
- Run
java -versionin the same terminal used to launch the server. - Check that the command names the actual launcher JAR and that the terminal is in the correct folder.
- Use Java 17 for 1.17–1.20.4 or Java 21 for 1.20.5 and newer.
- Read the first error before changing files; a missing dependency is usually more useful than the final shutdown message.
Players receive a mod or registry mismatch
- Compare the Minecraft patch, Fabric Loader line, Fabric API release and every mod filename on the client and server.
- Remove duplicate or client-only JARs from the dedicated server.
- Install the dependency and restart after the change.
The server works locally but not for friends
- Confirm the server is listening on the port shown in
server.properties; the default is 25565. - Check the computer firewall and the router forwarding target.
- Make sure the local address assigned to the server computer has not changed.
- Have remote players use the public address while players in the same home network use the local address.
The world or settings appear wrong after an edit
- Stop the server before editing files.
- Check that the edited property has the exact spelling and value format.
- Remember that a seed setting affects new world generation; it does not rewrite an existing world.
- Restore the last known-good backup if a change damages startup or world loading.
Final setup checklist
- Server, clients and mods use the same Minecraft version and compatible Fabric Loader line.
- Java 17 is used for 1.17–1.20.4, or Java 21 for 1.20.5 and newer.
- The executable launcher has completed its first run and the EULA is accepted.
server.propertiescontains the intended seed, MOTD, difficulty, player limit, whitelist choice and port.- Fabric API and all required dependencies are present.
- Client-only mods are not installed on the dedicated server.
- The host can join locally before remote access is attempted.
- The firewall and router forward the actual configured port, normally 25565.
- The whitelist is enabled and populated when the world is private.
- A clean backup exists before updates or major mod changes.
