To set up a Mac mini, first connect a compatible display, keyboard, and mouse or trackpad, then turn it on and follow Setup Assistant. You can transfer data from another device or backup, or start with a clean setup. The exact display cable depends on your monitor and Mac mini model.
What you need before you start
- A display: Check the display’s input and your Mac mini’s available video ports. Use the display documentation to choose a compatible cable or adapter; there is no single cable that suits every combination.
- A keyboard and pointing device: Connect a keyboard and a mouse or trackpad. Wired and Bluetooth accessories are supported. A wired device may require a compatible port or adapter.
- Power and, if using Wi-Fi, the network password: Place the Mac mini near a power source and your display. You will be asked to join a network during setup.
If Bluetooth pairing is difficult, use wired input devices or connect a compatible Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse, or Magic Trackpad to the Mac mini with its cable to pair it. Do not assume a display or input device is included with your purchase; check the listing for your exact model and region. Apple’s Mac mini setup guide and accessory connection guide cover connection options.

| Another Mac | Use Migration Assistant. Apple describes wireless transfer when the Macs are near each other, on Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth is on for the source Mac. A compatible Thunderbolt or Ethernet cable is another option; Apple says cable transfer is often faster. |
| Time Machine backup or startup disk | Select the backup or disk as the transfer source when prompted. |
| Windows PC | The Mac and PC need to be on the same Wi-Fi network; Bluetooth must be on for the PC, and Migration Assistant must be installed there. |
| Supported iPhone or iPad setup flow | Apple’s guide lists iOS 18.4 or later for iPhone and iPadOS 18.4 or later for iPad, with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled on the device. This option can carry over some settings and iCloud content. |
| Set up as new | Continue without transferring data. This does not automatically copy files or settings from another device. |
Migration takes additional time compared with basic setup, and Apple does not give a fixed duration. Device-assisted options and requirements can change; check Apple’s current Mac mini setup guidance for the route you plan to use.
Connect to a network and create your Mac account
- Choose your Wi-Fi network and enter its password. To configure Ethernet instead, choose Other Network Options and follow the prompts.
- Create the name and password for your Mac account. This is the local account you use on this computer.
- Decide whether to sign in with an Apple Account during setup. You can also defer sign-in until later; verification may be required.
Your Mac account and Apple Account are different. The local Mac account lets you use the computer, while an Apple Account is used for Apple services and content.
