You can record security-camera footage locally—usually to a microSD card in the camera or to a compatible network video recorder (NVR) or network-attached storage (NAS)—without paying for cloud video storage. But local recording does not necessarily mean the camera can be set up or used without an internet connection, account, app, or vendor service. Those capabilities depend on the exact model.
Choose where recordings will be stored
For a single camera, an onboard microSD card is often the simplest option. For several cameras or a central archive, an NVR or NAS can be a better fit, provided the camera and recorder support compatible protocols and software.

| Option | Where video is stored | What to check | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| microSD card | Inside each camera | Whether the exact model supports local recording, the card type and maximum capacity, and whether event or continuous recording is available. TP-Link says card capacity varies by Tapo model and cards are sold separately (TP-Link support). | A straightforward setup with one or a few cameras and storage kept in each camera. |
| NVR or NAS | On a separate recorder or network storage device | Whether the camera supports RTSP or ONVIF, and whether the specific recorder software supports that camera and protocol. See TP-Link’s ONVIF guidance and eufy’s NAS/RTSP guide. | Centralized recording, especially when managing multiple compatible cameras. |
Do not assume every camera works with every recorder. TP-Link documents ONVIF Profile S support for non-battery Tapo cameras; eufy’s guide describes sending RTSP video to compatible NAS software. Check the current documentation for both the camera and recorder before buying equipment.

Local recording answers one question: where the video files are saved. It does not, by itself, tell you whether initial setup needs internet, whether an app account is required, whether remote viewing will work without the vendor’s service, or whether alerts and thumbnails use cloud features.

- ENDLESS POWER FROM SOLAR ENERGY: Just 45 minutes of direct sunlight powers the camera for a full day of use, while the built-in battery lasts up to 180 days on a single charge during cloudy days. Solar charging requires temperatures above 32°F.△
- EASY WIRE-FREE INSTALLATION: Place the Tapo SolarCam C402 KIT where you need it without relying on nearby outlets. Install the camera and solar panel together or separately using the included 13 ft cable for flexible placement.
- PRIORITIZE WHAT MATTERS: Set activity zones to monitor specific areas for motion or people. Free person and motion detection helps reduce unwanted alerts and notifies you when activity is detected.
- VERSATILE VIDEO STORAGE: Store footage locally via a microSD card (up to 512GB)* or via cloud with a Tapo Care cloud subscription. Tailor your security to suit your needs, whether indoor or outdoor, you have the storage option you need.
- FULL-COLOR 1080P, DAY AND NIGHT: See clearly in low light with a large-aperture lens and built-in spotlights. Capture full-color night vision up to 30 ft away to monitor for possible intruders or motion.
For example, TP-Link says Tapo cameras must connect to a network during initial configuration. Its support page also says local SD-card recording can continue when the router connection is lost, while app-based viewing and notifications depend on network availability in the described situations (TP-Link support). Treat that as guidance for the documented Tapo products, not a rule for all cameras. Check what the specific camera can do offline before choosing it.
Battery-powered cameras may have different recording limits from wired models, including restrictions on continuous recording. Consult the exact model’s manual rather than assuming it supports 24/7 capture.

Set up microSD recording
- Check compatibility first. In the camera’s current official manual, confirm that local recording is supported, what card type it accepts, its maximum supported capacity, and whether the camera is battery-powered. A compatible surveillance-rated card is a common accessory, but capacity should be chosen from the camera’s documented limits.
- Place or mount the camera. Aim it at the area you want to monitor and make sure it can reach the power source and home network required for setup and the features you plan to use.
- Insert and initialize the card. Follow the model’s instructions to insert the card and format or initialize it using the camera interface or app, if required.
- Turn on local recording. Use the camera’s documented app or interface setting. Choose event-only or continuous recording if the model offers both. Enable loop recording if you want the camera to overwrite older footage when the card fills.
- Make a short recording and play it back locally. Confirm that footage is being saved and can be accessed using the method the manufacturer documents before relying on the system.
Retention is not a fixed number of days. It depends on card capacity, resolution, recording mode, and the camera’s video settings. Loop recording can replace the oldest footage as storage fills, so export important clips before they are overwritten.

- Verify the camera’s protocol support. Look in the model-specific documentation for RTSP, ONVIF, or the manufacturer’s named NAS integration. A product having Wi-Fi or a local card slot does not establish that it can stream to a recorder.
- Confirm recorder compatibility. Check that your NVR or NAS software accepts the camera’s supported protocol and that it supports the camera’s streams and configuration. Compatibility is specific to the camera and recording software.
- Enable the documented local-streaming feature. Follow the camera maker’s instructions for enabling RTSP, ONVIF, or NAS access, then add the camera using the recorder’s setup process.
- Keep the camera address stable if needed. Eufy recommends assigning a static IP address in the router for its RTSP setup so the stream address does not change (eufy’s guide). Follow your own camera and router instructions; menu names differ.
- Test recording and playback in the recorder. Make a short recording and verify that it plays from the NVR or NAS. Eufy notes that recordings stored on a third-party NAS are played in the NAS application, not in the Eufy app (eufy’s guide).
A local recorder gives you a central storage location, but it does not automatically remove reliance on a camera vendor’s app, account, or remote-access service. Check those requirements separately.

Choose recording mode and plan for outages
Event-only recording saves clips when the camera detects activity; continuous recording saves video throughout the periods it supports. Event recording can use less storage, while continuous recording can provide context before or between motion events. Actual behavior and available modes vary by model. Wyze says its cameras with a microSD slot support continuous or events-only 24/7 local recording without a subscription (Wyze support); that statement applies to the product family described, not to cameras generally.
Local recording may continue through a router or internet outage, but features that need a network connection—such as app live view, remote playback, alerts, or remote access—may not. TP-Link specifically documents continued SD-card recording after router connectivity is lost for Tapo cameras, while describing network dependence for app features (TP-Link support). If outage behavior matters, verify it for your model and test it safely before relying on it.

Review privacy and account access
Keeping video on a card or NAS reduces the need to store recordings in a cloud video library, but other data or services may still be involved. Review the camera’s settings and privacy documentation for:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Account password strength and two-factor authentication, if offered.
- Shared users and who can view or manage the camera.
- Remote access and app connectivity.
- Audio recording, privacy mode, and motion-notification thumbnails.
- Any cloud-related features that remain enabled.
Lorex, for example, says its account supports two-factor authentication, its app can stop recording, and notification thumbnails may be temporarily stored in the cloud (Lorex’s privacy explanation). These are vendor statements illustrating why local video storage alone does not establish that no data or processing reaches a vendor.
Some Tapo models offer encrypted microSD recordings. TP-Link says those recordings can only be read through the Tapo app while encryption is enabled and labels the feature beta on its support page (TP-Link support). Encryption can make direct access from a computer or moving the card to another camera less convenient; confirm current availability for your model and app version.
Quick Recap
Before relying on the setup
- Confirm the exact camera model supports the storage method and recording mode you want.
- Check the supported card capacity or recorder compatibility before buying storage hardware.
- Verify how footage is accessed and whether initial setup requires internet, an account, or the manufacturer’s app.
- Test recording and playback, and confirm what happens to local recording and app features during a network outage.
- Review loop overwrite, account security, shared access, remote viewing, audio, and notification settings.
