To set up a green screen in Streamlabs Desktop, add or select your webcam source, open its Filters, and add Chroma Key. Evenly light a smooth green backdrop and adjust the filter gradually while watching the preview; there is no single setting that works for every room, camera, or subject.
What you need before you start
A physical green screen is optional for streaming in general. For this method, you need a green backdrop and lighting that covers it evenly. Streamlabs lists pullout and popup screens as well as simple green cloth as options. Pick a size and setup that cover the camera frame and can be kept smooth; a stand or clamps may help hang cloth, but are optional.

Put the backdrop as far behind you as your room allows. More distance can reduce green light reflecting onto your hair, skin, clothing, and chair. Light the backdrop evenly across its surface: lighting only from the front may leave uneven areas that are difficult to remove cleanly in software. - Prepare the backdrop. Hang or position the green screen behind you, smooth out creases where possible, and light the whole visible area evenly.
- Add or select your webcam source. If your scene does not already contain a camera, use Sources to add a Video Capture Device, then select your webcam. The current Streamlabs Desktop Quick Start Guide describes adding a camera this way.
- Open the camera filters. In the scene’s Sources list, open the camera source’s context menu and choose Filters.
- Add Chroma Key. In the filters panel, add Chroma Key. Check the preview to see how the background and the edges of your subject look.
- Refine the key. Adjust Similarity, Smoothness, and Key Color Spill Reduction cautiously. Change one control at a time and check your hair, skin, clothing, and chair after each adjustment.
- Finish the framing. Once the key looks clean, crop unwanted edges, then resize and reposition the camera source in the scene.
What the Chroma Key controls do

Streamlabs says the right values depend on lighting, hair, skin tone, and the background. The goal is not to maximize removal or smoothing, but to remove the backdrop without erasing the subject.

Fix common green-screen problems
- Green patches remain: Check that the backdrop is evenly lit and smooth. Then increase Similarity in small increments, checking that skin, hair, clothes, and the chair remain intact.
- Edges look jagged: Adjust Smoothness gradually. If parts of the subject start disappearing, back it off.
- A green fringe appears around you: Increase your distance from the backdrop if possible, then adjust Key Color Spill Reduction.
- Parts of you disappear: Reduce Similarity or Smoothness and inspect the edges of hair, clothing, and the chair. Clothing close to the key color can be removed with the background.
- The background keys unevenly: Straighten the screen and improve the light coverage before trying to compensate with image controls. Creases, wrinkles, or gaps can make the physical background harder to key consistently.
Streamlabs Desktop is not Talk Studio
This walkthrough is for Streamlabs Desktop, where the documented procedure is to open the camera source’s Filters and add Chroma Key. Streamlabs Talk Studio has a separate browser-based virtual-background workflow.
