Set your Shopify store’s default social card image in Online Store > Preferences, under Social sharing image and SEO. It is a fallback, not a guaranteed override: a product, collection, or blog post’s featured image—or theme-level metadata—may appear instead. Shopify’s documented steps are the same for store owners in India; the reviewed instructions do not describe a separate India-specific setting.
Set the store’s social sharing image
- In Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Preferences.
- Find Social sharing image and SEO.
- Choose Add image if no image is set, or Change image to replace the current one.
- Select the image file, then click Save.
This sets the store-level image Shopify can use when a shared page does not have its own featured image. Shopify’s official instructions are at Choosing a social media image. A Hindi-language version is also available at Shopify Hindi Help; it does not describe a separate India workflow.

Know which image a shared URL may use
The preference image is not necessarily used for every page. Shopify documents this general precedence: theme code images, then theme settings images, then the image in Online Store Preferences. In Shopify’s free themes, a product page, collection page, or blog post generally uses that page’s featured image. The store image is used for pages without a featured image, such as the homepage or an About page. Shopify’s Liquid page_image documentation describes this behavior.
If a theme does not provide Open Graph image tags, Shopify can generate og:image, og:image:secure_url, og:image:width, and og:image:height from the page_image object. A customized or third-party theme may handle metadata differently. Shopify’s theme requirements call for Open Graph and Twitter card tags, so theme code and settings can affect what a platform reads.

Check the result for the page you plan to share
- Open the exact page URL you intend to post—not only the store homepage.
- Check whether that page has a featured image. For products, collections, and blog posts, it may take precedence over the store fallback.
- Review the theme editor for social image controls and inspect theme metadata if the page still shows an unexpected image. This is especially relevant for edited or third-party themes.
- Use the social platform’s link-preview or debugging tool to inspect the URL after saving. Shopify’s help article names Facebook Sharing Debugger, Twitter Card Validator, and LinkedIn Post Inspector; confirm that a named tool is currently available before relying on it.
Troubleshoot a missing or stale social preview
A product or collection image appears instead
This can be expected: the page’s featured image may be selected instead of the store-level fallback. If you need a different preview for that URL, review that page’s featured image and the theme’s page-specific social metadata.
The preference setting is blank, or the chosen image is not used
Shopify says the image may be set in theme settings instead, including a Social media or Social sharing image control in the theme editor. Some themes display only images uploaded through their theme settings. Check those controls as well as the preference, then inspect the page’s emitted metadata if the mismatch persists.

The preview still shows the old image
Social platforms may retain cached page information. Shopify advises using Facebook Sharing Debugger to refresh saved link information after an image change. This is different from changing Shopify’s setting: first ensure the page now emits the intended image, then use the relevant platform’s available refresh or preview tool.

Shopify’s help article advises resubmitting the sitemap after updating the image in admin. Search-result updates and social-link preview caching are separate issues, so refreshing a social preview alone may not update a search result.

When an app may be useful
The built-in preference and theme controls are the natural starting point for a store-wide fallback and page-level images. If you need more control or automation than those settings provide, the Shopify App Store lists PreviewBuilder: Link Image, which describes customizing social link preview images and Open Graph metadata. Review its current listing and capabilities before installing; its listing alone does not establish that it is necessary for a typical store.
