To change a live stream’s orientation, set the output to portrait (9:16) or landscape (16:9) in the streaming app or platform before you go live. Rotating your phone or preview does not necessarily change the audience-facing video. The exact control depends on the service: YouTube Live Control Room can offer vertical and horizontal output together, TikTok LIVE Studio has a Dual layout, while Restream Studio and Streamlabs Talk Studio require you to select an orientation before starting.
Choose the orientation your viewers need
Portrait is a vertical 9:16 frame; landscape is a horizontal 16:9 frame in the streaming-studio documentation cited here. Choose portrait for a phone-first vertical presentation and landscape for a conventional widescreen layout. If you need to serve both viewing contexts, use a documented dual-format workflow where the destination supports it rather than assuming that rotating a device will create a second output.

There are three different things people may mean by “orientation”: how the phone is held, how the camera or scene is composed, and the format sent to the streaming platform. Only the last determines the audience-facing stream. Preview the outgoing layout in the service you are using before starting.

Change orientation in YouTube Live Control Room
YouTube says streams started from Live Control Room go live in horizontal 16:9 and vertical 9:16 formats by default. The vertical version begins as a center crop, so check what remains inside the frame. You can edit its layout in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room using center crop, fit to phone width, or stacked options, then adjust zoom and position. See YouTube Help on streaming.

For a third-party encoder
YouTube describes dual streaming with RTMP(S): select a second stream key for the vertical output. In this workflow, Shorts-feed viewers see the vertical version and other viewers see the horizontal version, with one shared stream URL and chat. Confirm that the encoder and destination are configured for the outputs you intend to send; the phone’s orientation alone does not configure them.
Change orientation in TikTok LIVE Studio
- In LIVE Studio, right-click the scene you want to use.
- Choose Switch layout, then Dual layout.
- Edit the portrait layout first. Sources and widgets sync to landscape, where you can adjust their position and size.
- Preview both layouts before going live. Full-screen video is proportionally scaled and centered rather than cropped or distorted.
Chatbox and ranking widgets are removed when switching a landscape scene to Dual layout because they are not supported in portrait. TikTok describes the feature as “landscape + portrait.” Details are in TikTok LIVE Studio Help.

For a phone-based streaming app
Mobile behavior is app-specific. For example, the Roland GO:LIVECAST manual says its app can be used in portrait or landscape and broadcasts in the orientation being used. That is a product-specific instruction, not a rule for every phone or streaming app. Consult the app’s own settings and preview its output. See the Roland GO:LIVECAST Owner’s Manual.
Check the composition before you start
- Look at the audience-facing preview in the intended orientation, not just the phone screen or camera preview.
- Inspect the edges of a portrait crop. A landscape composition may lose important content when cropped vertically.
- Where the service allows it, reposition or resize sources so titles, faces, and other essential content remain visible.
- If you need both formats, confirm that the platform supports dual output and learn how it handles each scene. A crop, a fit-to-width view, a stacked layout, and separately arranged sources do not produce the same composition.
- Check whether the chosen workflow removes or changes widgets or other features in one format.
Common orientation problems and fixes
The phone is vertical, but the stream is horizontal
The phone’s position may affect the camera image without changing the encoder canvas or platform output. Set the orientation in the streaming service or scene controls, then inspect the outgoing preview.

The portrait version cuts off important content
A center crop can exclude material near the sides of a landscape frame. Adjust the YouTube vertical layout’s crop, zoom, or position where available, or rearrange sources in a dual-layout workflow.

The orientation control is unavailable after starting
Some services lock the format for the duration of a live session. Restream Studio and Streamlabs Talk Studio both document a before-you-go-live selection; stop and set up the next broadcast in the required orientation rather than expecting a midstream switch.
