To set up a DualSense Edge for competitive play, create a profile for a specific game on your PS5, then tune its stick response, button assignments and trigger behavior one setting at a time. “Competitive” does not mean there is one best preset: Sony documents what the controls do but does not recommend a universal curve or deadzone, or publish a measurable performance gain from using a particular setup. Playtest changes in the game you intend to play, and check that game’s controller settings if inputs behave unexpectedly.
What the DualSense Edge profile can change
The DualSense Edge wireless controller lets you save custom PS5 profiles for different games or uses. A profile can include button assignments, stick sensitivity and deadzone, trigger deadzone, vibration intensity and trigger-effect intensity. Keep the default profile available, and give each custom profile a name that makes its purpose clear.

Create a profile on PS5
- On the PS5, open Settings > Accessories > DualSense Edge Wireless Controller > Custom Profiles.
- Select Create Custom Profile.
- Enter a name, ideally the game or use case the profile is for.
- Choose a setting to edit, such as Stick Sensitivity/Deadzone or Customize Button Assignments, and adjust it.
- Apply and save the profile, then use it in the intended game before making further changes.
Choose stick curves and deadzones by feel in the game
Stick sensitivity curves change how stick tilt translates into registered input. The deadzone is the amount the stick can move before input registers. Sony’s PC customization guide illustrates a 10% deadzone: the stick must move beyond that amount before the input registers. That is an explanatory example, not a recommended competitive value.

- Ultra Customizable Controls
- Mappable Back Buttons
- DualSense Wireless Controller Features Built In
- Replaceable Stick Modules and Caps
Sony describes six curve choices in its PC guide. The horizontal axis represents stick tilt and the vertical axis the resulting in-game input.
| Curve | Behavior described by Sony |
|---|---|
| Default | Registered input increases proportionally with stick movement. |
| Quick | Input accelerates as the stick tilts, supporting faster movement. |
| Precise | Minimum input is registered as the stick tilts, supporting slow adjustments. |
| Steady | Input is limited even at larger tilt. |
| Digital | Even slight tilt registers nearly maximum input. |
| Dynamic | Input is limited at small and large tilt, and accelerates in the middle range. |
These descriptions explain how the options behave; they do not establish which curve is best for a game or player. A practical tuning sequence is to change one setting, play the same situations in the target game, and keep or revert the change based on control. If the response seems wrong, inspect in-game controller settings too: Sony cautions that game settings can clash with an Edge profile.

- Aim and move with precision by swapping in fresh stick modules* so you’re always playing with equipment that’s in great shape. Plus, three types of changeable stick caps help you stay comfortable in-game without sacrificing grip or stability.
- Mappable back buttons The DualSense Edge wireless controller’s two swappable sets of back buttons can be configured to any other button input, so you’ve always got game-changing actions and essential controls at your fingertips.
- Adjustable trigger lengths Manually set the travel distance of your left and right triggers for an optimal experience with whatever you’re playing. Fast-paced FPS? Set a shorter travel distance to shoot faster on the field. Competitive racer? Set a longer travel distance for precise throttle control on the track.
- Remappable buttons Remap or even deactivate specific button inputs, so you can create a completely personalized control setup that’s ideal for the game at hand.
- Quick-swap control profiles Once you’ve found your ideal control settings, you can save them to unique profiles and swap between them on-the-fly, so your favourite configurations are always ready when you are.
Remap buttons and fit the back buttons
Use Customize Button Assignments to select a controller button and assign a function, then apply the change. Sony notes that disabling a button means it will not produce an input. Remap only actions that genuinely benefit from easier access; the useful layout depends on both the game and the player.
The Edge includes interchangeable half-dome back buttons and lever-style back buttons. The half-dome buttons can be used in either position. Lever buttons are side-specific: match the R and L markings to the corresponding right or left slot. Choose the physical button shape that feels comfortable rather than assuming one provides an advantage.

Balance trigger travel against trigger effects
The rear L2/R2 stop sliders offer long, medium and short travel. Shorter travel reduces how far a trigger moves, but Sony warns that trigger effects do not work when the stops are set to medium or shallow (short) strokes. Trigger effects also depend on support in the game, and Sony’s PC guide notes that trigger deadzone settings can affect whether the effects are available.
Trigger deadzone controls the range of a trigger press that registers. Sony illustrates this with an example where input begins past 30 and reaches maximum at 70; presses shallower than 30 or deeper than 70 do not register. This is an illustration of the setting, not a competitive recommendation. Consider the trade-off that fits the game: shorter mechanical travel, or retaining trigger effects where they are supported.

Sony’s support guide associates the default profile with Fn + Triangle; that shortcut cannot be changed. Other profiles can be assigned to the remaining shortcuts. To switch, hold Fn and press the action button assigned to the profile. Sony’s product page also describes pressing Fn + Options in-game to open the customization menu.
The instruction manual says profiles stored on the controller can be taken to another PS5. This makes named game profiles useful when moving between consoles, as well as when switching games on one system.

Decide which setup trade-off matters most
| Setup choice | What changes | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Stick curve and deadzone | How tilt translates into registered input. | Try changes in the target game; the documented controls do not establish a universally best setting. |
| Trigger stop and effects | Shorter trigger travel can be selected, but medium or short stops disable trigger effects. | Game support and trigger deadzone settings can also affect trigger effects. |
| Button remapping and back buttons | Moves selected functions to different controls, including back buttons. | Choose a layout and physical button shape that suit the player; lever buttons are side-specific. |
| One setup or named profiles | Profiles let you save distinct configurations and switch using shortcuts. | Name profiles for their game or use so the intended setup is easy to identify. |
These are configuration options, not evidence that a particular controller setup improves tournament results. A replacement stick module is a maintenance option if a module malfunctions or stops working; Sony does not identify it as a competitive upgrade. The modules are sold separately and can be used on either side.
