That makes the selected profile the default for that display. If you want Windows to create a profile instead, choose Calibrate display.
Before you begin: choose the right profile and display
Use a profile made for your specific monitor and the display state you intend to use. An arbitrary profile may not describe your monitor accurately. Keep track of the profile file’s location so you can find it when adding it in Settings.

Windows manages the selection for a chosen display. If you use more than one monitor, identify the target monitor before changing its profile; a profile selected for one display is not automatically the choice for another.

- Open Color profile: Go to Settings > System > Display > Color profile.
- Select the monitor: Choose the display you want to configure before adding or changing a profile.
- Add or find the profile: Add the ICC/ICM profile or locate it in the profiles available for that display.
- Make it the default: Select the intended profile and choose Set profile. Microsoft describes this control as the way to set a profile as the default. Confirm that the correct monitor is still selected.
See Microsoft’s Windows display brightness and color instructions for the current Settings workflow. If you are setting a profile through the Windows Color System API rather than Settings, Microsoft says the profile must already be installed before it can be set as the default. The API’s privilege requirement depends on scope: current-user scope can run in a least-privileged user context, while other scope requires administrative privileges. This API detail does not mean that the Settings procedure always requires administrator access. See Microsoft’s WcsSetDefaultColorProfile documentation.

Applying a profile is different from calibrating a display
Choose an existing custom profile when you already have an ICC/ICM file intended for the monitor. Choose Calibrate display when you want to create a profile by following Windows’ calibration steps; Microsoft says the calibration tool creates a profile for the display on which it runs.
For an external display with HDR enabled, Windows may prompt you to use the Windows HDR Calibration app. HDR and advanced-color handling do not always follow the ordinary profile-selection workflow: Microsoft’s API reference excludes advanced-color profiles for HDR monitors from WcsSetDefaultColorProfile. Windows also documents a hardware-dependent MHC ICC calibration path for supported display pipelines. See Microsoft’s hardware display color calibration pipeline documentation.

If your profile or controls are missing
- The profile is not listed: Confirm that it has been added or installed, and check that you are viewing the intended display. The documented API requires an installed profile before it can set that profile as default.
- You cannot find Color profile or Calibrate display: Confirm the selected display and whether the system and display support the feature. Microsoft’s support instructions do not provide a complete diagnostic tree, so a missing control alone does not establish the cause.
- HDR is enabled: Follow the HDR-specific prompt if Windows presents one. The standard API’s advanced-color limitation means the ordinary ICC workflow should not be assumed to cover every HDR case.
- An app looks unchanged: Windows provides controls for profile management and calibration, but these instructions do not establish that every application will visibly respond to a profile change. App behavior should not be treated as proof that Windows failed to set the display’s default.
