You can sign an ordinary PDF by typing a signature, drawing one, or inserting an image, then saving and checking the signed file. For a signature request that needs to go to other people, use an e-signature workflow rather than passing around a manually marked copy. A visible signature is not the same as a certificate-based digital signature, which can help verify identity and document integrity.
Choose the right way to sign

Sign your own PDF online or on a computer
- Open a trusted PDF signing tool or the PDF app already available to you. If the document contains sensitive information, consider whether you are comfortable uploading it to a web service.
- In Adobe’s web workflow, select E-Sign, then Fill & Sign, and select the PDF to upload.
- Create a signature by typing, drawing, or choosing an image if the tool supports it. Place it on the intended signature line, resize it, and complete any requested name or date fields.
- Save or download the signed PDF. Reopen that saved copy and check that the signature is in the right place, the rest of the page remains legible, and the file you intend to send is the completed version.

Sign a PDF on an iPhone or iPad
- Open an eligible local file in Acrobat for iOS. Shared, view-only, review, or secured files may prevent signing.
- Tap Edit > Fill & Sign > Sign.
- Draw your signature, select an existing image, or use the camera to capture one. Tap Done.
- Place the signature on the document and resize it as needed.
- Check its position before saving. Adobe says a saved, flattened signature cannot be removed; keep a separate copy if you may need to revise the document.

Adobe Acrobat Sign
Use a signature-request workflow when other people need to sign. Adobe says recipients can sign through a browser or mobile device without an Acrobat subscription. A request is different from adding a signature to your own copy: it routes the document to signers rather than relying on you to pass a marked-up PDF around. Adobe Acrobat e-signatures overview

Google Drive eSignature
The requester prepares the fields, enters each signer’s email address, and sends the request. Google documents support for up to 10 signers. A PDF in an active request is locked; if it needs changes, the requester must cancel the request and send a new one from the updated source. The completed PDF includes an audit-trail page with events and timestamps. Google Drive eSignature Help
As a signer, open the email link or PDF in Drive, fill the fields assigned to you, type or draw your signature, and mark the request complete. Check that you can access the completed PDF afterward.

Electronic signatures and digital signatures are different
Typing your name, drawing a mark, or placing a signature image creates a visible electronic signature. By itself, that mark does not establish the signer’s identity or show that the PDF has not been altered. A certificate-based digital signature uses a certificate ID and can help recipients verify signer identity and document integrity. Adobe describes these as distinct security services in its certificate-signature guidance.
If a recipient or rule calls for an advanced or qualified signature, ask which certificate, trust provider, and format it accepts. Adobe’s documentation references eIDAS and ETSI PAdES in discussing those requirements; that does not mean every electronic signature or every signed PDF meets them.

Check the document and signature requirements before sending
- Read the document before signing, including any terms or fields outside the signature line.
- Check that your mark is on the intended line and that the saved PDF is complete and legible.
- For a shared or secured file, confirm that you have permission to sign it; file restrictions may block the feature.
- If the document is part of an active Google Drive request, ask the requester to cancel and resend it if a correction is needed.
- Ask the recipient whether a visible electronic signature is sufficient or whether a certificate-based signature or particular format is required.
Legal recognition depends on the jurisdiction, document, transaction, and required level of assurance. The product guidance cited here does not establish that a particular signing method is legally sufficient for every use.
