A CNAME aliases one hostname to another; to send viewers from an address such as live.example.com to a YouTube event, you also need an HTTP redirect configured through a DNS or web provider that can handle the hostname’s web traffic.
First, identify which YouTube URL you want to customize
A branded address for a live event
This guide covers a viewer-facing address that redirects to one YouTube Live watch page. Create or schedule the event in YouTube Studio first, then use its watch-page URL as the redirect destination. The custom address is a convenience for viewers; it does not host the video or change where your encoder sends it.

A custom URL for your channel
A custom domain redirect is different from a YouTube channel URL. YouTube Help says, “New custom URLs can no longer be set up and existing custom URLs can no longer be changed.” Channel handle URLs are generated automatically when an owner chooses or changes a handle; existing legacy custom URLs continue to work.

A CNAME record tells DNS that one hostname is an alias of another hostname. Its destination field takes a hostname, not a complete URL: do not enter https:// or a path such as /watch?v=... there. DNS resolution alone does not tell a browser to open a YouTube page. The HTTP redirect is a separate rule that must send a browser request for your custom hostname to the event’s full watch-page URL.

- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Keep the two YouTube addresses involved in a live stream separate. Viewers use the watch-page URL. Your encoder uses the Stream URL and stream key supplied by YouTube in Live Control Room. A custom viewer address does not replace either encoder value.
Set up the custom viewer address
- Create the event and copy its viewer URL. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream and copy the watch-page URL that viewers should reach. Confirm the event’s visibility and access settings match your intended audience.
- Copy the encoder details separately. In Live Control Room, copy YouTube’s Stream URL and stream key for your encoder. Live streaming must be enabled for the channel. Keep these details private; do not expose the stream key in screenshots or instructions.
- Choose a hostname. A dedicated subdomain such as
live.example.comis usually easier to configure without disturbing the domain’s existing website or email setup. The exact options depend on your provider. - Create the provider-required DNS record. At your DNS or web provider, add the record it requires for that hostname and ensure the provider can handle its web traffic. Do not assume there is one universal CNAME target: providers implement forwarding differently. A CNAME generally cannot share its hostname with other record types, so check for existing records before changing anything.
- Configure an HTTP redirect. In your provider’s forwarding, URL redirect, or redirect-rule feature, set the custom hostname to redirect to the exact YouTube watch-page URL. Choose deliberately whether paths and query strings should be preserved; for a single event, the intended destination should be the correct watch page.
- Test the address in a browser. Try the custom hostname over HTTPS and confirm it lands on the intended YouTube page. Test again when the event is live, and check that its access settings make it viewable to the people you expect.
Provider options and hostname caveats
Use your DNS or web provider’s forwarding feature
This is the most direct option if your provider supports redirects for your chosen hostname and serves HTTPS correctly for it. Look for a feature named forwarding, URL redirect, or redirect rule. Check support for the hostname you want, the provider’s DNS-record or proxy requirements, and whether it can preserve paths and query strings.

Use a separate web host or redirect service
If your DNS provider does not offer the required redirect, you can point the hostname to a separate service that handles web requests and configure the redirect there. The service must support the hostname and HTTPS if people will visit the address using https://. DNS records alone do not provide a browser redirect or guarantee certificate coverage.

Use Cloudflare as one documented example
Cloudflare’s documented domain-redirect setup uses a DNS record that resolves through its proxy and a Redirect Rule. That is a Cloudflare-specific implementation, not a universal CNAME recipe or YouTube setting. Cloudflare also documents CNAME flattening for apex (root-domain) configurations, but root-domain support and setup differ by provider.

Prefer a subdomain unless you need the root domain
The apex or root hostname—such as example.com without a subdomain—has provider-specific DNS behavior and may already have records for a website or email. Before changing it, check the provider’s rules and existing records. Do not remove or replace mail-related records to add a live-stream redirect. A dedicated subdomain usually isolates the redirect from those configurations.
Keep the encoder pointed at YouTube
Configure your encoder with the Stream URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room; do not use the custom viewer hostname as the ingest address. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. If you choose RTMPS, retrieve the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room and use an RTMPS-compatible encoder. If the stream does not ingest, troubleshoot the YouTube server URL, key, protocol, and encoder separately from the browser redirect.

Troubleshooting
- The custom hostname resolves but does not open YouTube. A DNS alias may be in place without a redirect rule. Add or correct the HTTP redirect to the full watch-page URL.
- The CNAME field rejects the destination. Check that you entered only the destination hostname—not a scheme such as
https://or a URL path. Put the full watch URL in the redirect configuration instead. - You cannot add the CNAME. Check for another record with the same hostname. DNS providers generally do not allow a CNAME to coexist with A, AAAA, or other record types at that name. Avoid overwriting records used by your site or email.
- The root domain does not work as expected. Check whether your provider supports apex handling and how it implements it; do not assume ordinary subdomain CNAME behavior applies. Consider using a dedicated subdomain.
- HTTPS fails or shows a certificate warning. DNS does not issue a browser redirect or guarantee a certificate. Confirm the redirect service supports HTTPS and has certificate coverage for the custom hostname.
- The address reaches the wrong event or viewers cannot watch. Verify the redirect’s destination URL and check the YouTube event’s visibility and access settings.
- The page opens, but the live stream does not play. The redirect only affects how a viewer reaches the watch page. Check that the event is live and publicly accessible as intended; if the encoder is not reaching YouTube, verify its YouTube-provided Stream URL, stream key, and protocol independently.
- The hostname does not update immediately. DNS propagation and cached results vary by provider and cache. Check the record and redirect configuration before assuming a fixed completion time.
