How to Capture a Webpage Screenshot from a Webhook in n8n

Use an n8n Webhook, HTTP Request, and Respond to Webhook nodes to accept a URL, capture a rendered page, and return the screenshot as binary data.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Send a target URL to an n8n Webhook, pass it to a browser-based screenshot API with an HTTP Request node, then return the API’s image bytes through Respond to Webhook. The workflow has three jobs: accept and validate the request, render the page, and send the resulting file back to the caller.

This is an implementation guide assembled from documented n8n and Browserless components, not a tested workflow export. Exact HTTP Request binary-response labels can vary by n8n version, so verify the binary property in your own execution data.

How the webhook screenshot flow works

A browser screenshot API is important because a screenshot represents a rendered page, not just the HTML returned by a basic HTTP fetch. A typical request travels through this chain:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. A caller sends a JSON body containing a URL to the n8n Webhook.
  2. n8n checks that the URL is present and permitted.
  3. An HTTP Request node posts the URL and capture options to a screenshot service.
  4. The service returns image bytes, which n8n keeps as binary data.
  5. A Respond to Webhook node returns those bytes to the original caller.

n8n provides separate test and production webhook URLs. The test URL is for development while the workflow is listening for a test event; publishing the workflow registers its production URL. See the n8n Webhook documentation.

Build the workflow in n8n

1. Add and secure the Webhook trigger

  1. Add a Webhook node and choose POST if callers will send a JSON body. Set a stable path, such as page-screenshot.
  2. Choose an authentication method—Basic, Header, or JWT—or restrict access by IP where appropriate. Configure allowed origins if browser-based callers need CORS.
  3. Set the response mode to Using Respond to Webhook node, so the workflow can return the screenshot file rather than an immediate acknowledgement.
  4. During development, select Listen for Test Event and use the displayed test URL. For deployed callers, publish the workflow and use its production URL.

Webhook authentication does not make arbitrary target URLs safe. Treat the incoming URL as untrusted input and define which destinations the workflow is allowed to fetch. The n8n webhook controls documented here do not establish a complete SSRF-safe design.

2. Send a screenshot request

Add an HTTP Request node after the Webhook. Browserless documents a POST to its /screenshot endpoint with a JSON request body. Its example asks for a full-page PNG:

{
  "url": "https://example.com/",
  "options": {
    "fullPage": true,
    "type": "png"
  }
}

Map the URL from the incoming webhook payload rather than hard-coding it. For a JSON body such as {"url":"https://example.com/"}, the value is commonly available from the Webhook node’s body data; inspect that node’s output and use the expression picker to select the actual field for your n8n version and request configuration.

Logitech C270 720p Webcam Plug-and-Play Wide Screen Video Calling - Black | Auto-Light Correct, Noise-Reducing Mic, Zoom, Microsoft, Teams, Skype, Nintendo Switch 2 New GameChat Mode, PC Mac compatible
  • Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
  • Crisp HD 720p/30 fps video calls with diagonal 55° field of view and auto light correction. Compatible with popular platforms including Skype and Zoom.
  • The built-in noise-reducing mic makes sure your voice comes across clearly up to 1.5 meters away, even if you’re in busy surroundings.
  • C270’s RightLight 2 feature adjusts to lighting conditions, producing brighter, contrasted images to help you look good in all your conference calls.
  • The adjustable universal clip lets you attach the camera securely to your screen or laptop, or fold the clip and set the webcam on a shelf. You’re always ready for your next video call.

Configure the HTTP Request node to handle the response as a file or binary result, not parsed JSON. Keep the screenshot service’s credential out of the caller-controlled URL field and supply it using the protected credential or parameter mechanism appropriate to your deployed workflow. Browserless documents a binary image response with a Content-Type such as image/png; confirm the actual binary property name in the HTTP Request node’s execution output.

3. Return the binary image

  1. After the HTTP Request node, add Respond to Webhook.
  2. Set the response data type to Binary File.
  3. Choose the binary property produced by the HTTP Request node.
  4. Run a test and confirm that the caller receives an image response with the expected content type.

The Respond to Webhook node runs only for the first incoming item for a request. If the workflow creates multiple screenshot items, decide whether to return just one, combine them, or use a different delivery design. If the workflow finishes without reaching Respond to Webhook, n8n documents a standard 200 response; if it errors before its first execution, it documents a 500 response. Consult the Respond to Webhook documentation.

Choose the screenshot scope and timing

Browserless documents options for changing what is captured and when. Check the current endpoint documentation for exact option names and availability before deploying.

Need Approach
Visible viewport Use the normal screenshot behavior without requesting a full-page capture.
Whole document Set fullPage: true.
One element Use the documented top-level selector to capture an element’s bounding box.
Dynamic content Wait for a meaningful event, function, selector, or timeout rather than relying on an arbitrary long delay when the page exposes a readiness signal.
Lazy-loaded content Use the documented scrollPage: true option to bring lazy content into view; it can be combined with full-page capture.

Browserless’s screenshot API documents PNG examples, while its n8n integration listing describes PNG, JPEG, and WebP outputs. Do not assume every output format is accepted by every endpoint setting: confirm the selected endpoint’s current options.

Test the caller contract

Send a small request to the test URL first. A typical request body is:

{
  "url": "https://example.com/"
}

Check the HTTP status, response content type, and that the returned body opens as an image. Then publish the workflow and repeat the check against the production URL. A sample caller request can be made with cURL:

curl -X POST "YOUR_N8N_WEBHOOK_URL"
  -H "Content-Type: application/json"
  -H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_WEBHOOK_CREDENTIAL"
  -d '{"url":"https://example.com/"}'
  --output page.png

Adapt the authorization header to the authentication mode configured on the Webhook node. If the workflow returns an image, save the response body as a file rather than trying to parse it as JSON.

Security, limits, and operating considerations

  • Restrict destinations: validate the submitted URL and allow only destinations your workflow is intended to capture. Authentication protects who can call the webhook; it does not by itself constrain where the workflow fetches.
  • Plan for large responses: n8n documents a default maximum webhook payload size of 16 MB, configurable on self-hosted instances with N8N_PAYLOAD_SIZE_MAX. Screenshot responses may also be limited by the screenshot service and by your n8n hosting plan’s timeout, response, and binary-storage behavior. Verify the applicable limits for your installed version and deployment.
  • Expect site restrictions: CAPTCHA pages, access-denied or 403 responses, blank captures, and missing elements can indicate automation blocking or that the page did not reach the expected state. A screenshot API cannot guarantee access to every site; respect the site’s access rules.
  • Control response size and time: full-page images and long waits can increase response size and request duration. Use viewport capture when a full document is not necessary, and wait for a real readiness signal where possible.
  • Monitor binary output: if the response node cannot find the configured property, inspect the HTTP Request execution data and correct the binary property selection.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
Webhook caller receives an immediate response instead of an image The Webhook response mode is not set to use Respond to Webhook, or the response node did not run. Confirm the response mode and that the workflow path reaches Respond to Webhook.
HTTP Request returns JSON or no binary property The response is configured for JSON/text rather than file or binary data. Change the response handling to binary/file and inspect the resulting execution output for the property name.
Respond to Webhook reports missing binary data Its selected property does not match the HTTP Request node’s output. Use the actual binary property shown in the preceding node’s execution data.
Image is blank or shows a CAPTCHA/403 page The site may block automation, or the page may not have rendered the expected content. Check access policy and the screenshot service response; add an appropriate wait if the page needs more time.
Full-page capture omits images or sections Content may load only when scrolled into view or after a page-specific condition. Try scrollPage: true for lazy content and wait for a relevant selector or event.
Production caller cannot reach the endpoint The workflow may not be published, or the caller may be using the test URL. Publish the workflow and use the production URL registered by n8n.
Large captures fail or time out Limits may apply in n8n, the screenshot service, or the hosting environment. Check the installed n8n version and hosting-plan limits; reduce capture scope or wait duration as needed.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. In n8n, call its API from an HTTP Request node with a GET request to the screenshot endpoint and pass the caller’s URL as a parameter. For example, the equivalent command-line request is:

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the n8n webhook return a screenshot instead of JSON?

Yes. Configure the Webhook to use Respond to Webhook and configure that node to return the screenshot’s binary property as a Binary File.

Does the workflow work with pages that need JavaScript?

A browser-rendering screenshot API is designed to capture rendered pages. For dynamic or lazy-loaded content, use an appropriate wait condition and, where needed, scroll the page before capture.

Can I return several screenshots from one webhook request?

The documented Respond to Webhook behavior uses the first incoming item for a request. A multi-image response therefore needs an explicit design, such as combining results or storing files and returning links.
