Then install any ChromeOS update and tailor the device for personal use or follow your school or employer’s setup instructions. Managed devices can restrict settings, so contact the organization’s administrator rather than trying to bypass its controls.
Set up the Chromebook for the first time
- Connect power and turn it on. Plug in the Chromebook and press its power button. Choose your preferred language and keyboard layout. Open Accessibility during setup if you need an available accessibility feature. Follow Google’s first-run setup instructions.
- Connect to a network. Select a Wi-Fi network and enter its password if prompted. A work or school network may require a certificate or other details from the organization’s administrator. See Google’s Wi-Fi connection guidance.
- Review and accept the displayed terms. Continue through the on-screen prompts.
- Sign in with the appropriate account. On a personal Chromebook, use your Google Account or create one if the setup flow allows it. On an organization-managed Chromebook, use the account provided by your school or employer and follow its instructions. Signing in can bring in bookmarks, extensions, and apps associated with your Google Account. Google explains Chromebook sign-in and account choices.
Choose the right setup for work or school
Use an organization-managed Chromebook
A school or employer may own the Chromebook and manage its settings. The organization can restrict websites, apps, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or accessibility features. If you cannot sign in, connect to a required network, or change a setting, ask the school or IT administrator for the correct account, certificate, or permission. Do not try to bypass device management. Google’s overview of school-managed Chromebooks describes how administrators can control the experience.

Use a personal Chromebook for work or school
If the Chromebook is yours, sign in with your personal Google Account during initial setup, then use the school or employer’s instructions for accessing its services. Some organizations require a separate work or school account, approved apps, or specific network details. Ask the organization’s administrator if you are unsure which account to use or a required option is unavailable.

Choose Wi-Fi with care
Use a trusted, password-protected network when one is available. Google warns that information sent over an open or public network may be available to other people. Enterprise Wi-Fi can require administrator-provided configuration, so request those details from your organization instead of guessing at settings. Network access may be needed to complete setup and download updates.

- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
Check for updates and restart
Chromebooks check for and download ChromeOS updates automatically when connected to the internet. If setup does not prompt you to update, open the system settings and look for the ChromeOS update option; exact labels can vary by version. Install any available update and restart when prompted to complete it. If an organization-managed Chromebook cannot update, contact its administrator. Support schedules vary by model, so check the device’s own “Update schedule” details rather than assuming every Chromebook has the same support end date. Google’s ChromeOS update instructions explain the process.
Move files from another computer
Before switching, back up files you need from the old computer. Google describes two common routes in its Chromebook migration guide:
Rank #2
- Storage: 16GB Flash Memory
- OS: Chrome OS
- Screen Size: 11.6"
- Cloud storage: Upload files to Google Drive or another cloud-storage service, then access them on the Chromebook.
- Removable storage: Copy files to a compatible USB flash drive or external hard drive. Connect it to the Chromebook and open it in the Files app. Compatibility can depend on both the Chromebook and the storage device.
Use the Files app to locate downloaded files, connected storage, and other available file locations. Back up important files before deleting or formatting anything on the old computer or removable drive.
Prepare the tasks you need offline
Set up offline access while the Chromebook is connected to the internet. Google identifies Google Docs and Gmail Offline as examples of tools that can support offline work when prepared. Do not assume that every website, app, or file will be available without a connection; check the offline options for the specific services you rely on before you lose internet access.
Rank #3
- Intel Processor Up to 2.80GHz, 4GB DDR4, 128GB Storage
- 15" FHD IPS Display, Intel UHD Graphics
- 1x USB Type C, 1 x USB Type A, 1x Headphone/Microphone Combo Jack, HDMI

Set up optional printing and scanning
Printing
A compatible printer can connect over a network or USB. For network printing, connect the Chromebook and printer to the same network, then follow Google’s printer setup instructions and any manufacturer-specific steps. Compatibility can vary by printer. Bluetooth printing is not supported on Chromebooks.
Scanning
Google says most printers and scanners connected over Wi-Fi or a wired network can be used with a Chromebook; Bluetooth scanning is not supported. You can also scan using the Chromebook camera. Check Google’s scanner setup guidance for the available options and setup details.
