Carbon Quantum Dots vs. Semiconductor Quantum Dots: Properties, Safety, and Uses

Carbon and semiconductor quantum dots can both fluoresce, but they differ in composition, optical behavior, applications, and formulation-specific safety considerations.

Carbon quantum dots and semiconductor quantum dots are different families of nanoscale materials, not two versions of one substance. Both can fluoresce and are studied for imaging and sensing, but their composition, optical behavior, applications, and potential hazards differ. Neither “carbon-based” nor “quantum dot” alone tells you whether a particular formulation is safe.

What is the difference between carbon and semiconductor quantum dots?

“Quantum dot” is a broad term. Semiconductor quantum dots (SQDs) are nanocrystals made from semiconductor materials. Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) are a varied family of carbon-based nanoscale materials. Their shared name and fluorescent behavior do not make them chemically interchangeable.

Comparison Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) Semiconductor quantum dots (SQDs)
Composition Carbon-based particles; synthesis, doping, and surface groups vary. A 2024 review, “Carbon Quantum Dots: Properties, Preparation, and Applications,” describes multiple preparation routes and formulations. Semiconductor nanocrystals. Examples listed by the US EPA include CdSe, ZnS-AgInS2, and PbS dots; not all SQDs contain cadmium.
What influences optical behavior? Fluorescence can involve carbon-domain electronic states and surface or defect states. Emission and excitation behavior depend on preparation and surface chemistry. Quantum confinement makes bandgap and fluorescence size-dependent, while composition also matters. Changing particle size can change the emitted color.
Studied or cited uses Bioimaging, sensing, drug-delivery and cancer-therapy research, optoelectronics, and environmental remediation. LEDs, imaging cells and molecules, solar cells, and specialized photonic devices.
Safety considerations Some formulations are investigated as lower-toxicity alternatives, but carbon composition does not establish that a material is harmless. Some formulations contain elements such as cadmium or lead. Risk depends on the particular material, its form, and how exposure could occur.
Evidence of application maturity The cited review surveys research directions; it does not establish that all listed uses are approved or routine products. The EPA cites device-use examples, while single-photon and entangled-photon applications are described in a specialized photonics review as emerging technologies. This does not establish a universal maturity ranking across uses.

How do their optical properties differ?

Semiconductor dots: size is a design variable

In a semiconductor nanocrystal, quantum confinement links the dot’s size to its bandgap and optical behavior. As the EPA explains, changing particle size can change fluorescence color. Size is not the only influence: the semiconductor composition and other properties also affect behavior.

Carbon dots: preparation and surface chemistry matter

CQDs are not one chemically uniform material. The 2024 review describes top-down preparation methods such as arc discharge, laser ablation, electrochemical methods, and oxidation, as well as bottom-up methods including templates, microwave, and hydrothermal approaches. Differences in preparation, doping, and surface chemistry can affect properties such as fluorescence, functionalization, and water solubility. These are reported features of studied CQDs, not guarantees for every formulation.

That variability makes a blanket statement such as “carbon dots have one characteristic color” or “all carbon dots behave the same way” misleading. A meaningful comparison needs the formulation and the measurement conditions, not just the material-family label.

What are the two types of quantum dots used for?

Carbon-dot research

The 2024 CQD review surveys research into bioimaging, sensors, optoelectronics, drug delivery, cancer-therapy approaches, and environmental remediation. Those examples describe a broad field of investigation; they do not mean every application is an established clinical product or commercially mature technology.

Semiconductor-dot devices and imaging

The EPA gives examples of CdSe quantum dots in LED lights, ZnS-AgInS2 quantum dots for imaging cells and molecules, and PbS quantum dots in solar cells. These examples illustrate the range of compositions and uses; they should not be read as a claim that every dot of a given type is used in every device.

A distinct area: quantum photonics

A 2019 NIST-hosted review describes epitaxial semiconductor quantum dots as artificial atoms with discrete energy levels. It discusses their use in emerging photonic quantum technologies, including on-demand generation of single photons and entangled photon pairs for research related to quantum communications, computing, and sensing. This is a specialized use and should be distinguished from quantum dots in ordinary display lighting.

Are carbon quantum dots safer?

There is evidence that some tested carbon-dot formulations were less toxic than a particular cadmium-based comparator in a particular animal study. That is a narrower conclusion than saying CQDs are safe, or that all SQDs are more toxic.

In a study published May 14, 2024, Chahal and colleagues compared nitrogen-doped carbon dots, nitrogen/sulfur-co-doped carbon dots, and CdTe quantum dots in fruit flies. The tested carbon-dot preparations showed no observed effect on larva-to-adult development across the study’s 10–100 mg/kg food dose range. For the tested CdTe dots, the authors reported an EC50 of 46 mg/kg food for that developmental endpoint, along with concentration-related delays in pupation and emergence.

This was an animal study of specific samples, dietary exposure, and developmental outcomes. Its result is not a human safety threshold, does not establish the safety of all CQDs, and does not show that every semiconductor quantum dot has the toxicity of the tested CdTe dots. The study also discusses prior findings and toxicity mechanisms; a coating should not be treated as an automatic guarantee against risk.

What determines risk for a particular quantum dot?

The material-family name is only a starting point. The EPA’s nanomaterial exposure resource emphasizes that behavior and exposure depend on physical and chemical properties and the use scenario. Relevant factors include:

  • Composition, including whether the formulation contains potentially hazardous elements.
  • Particle size and shape, surface chemistry, coatings, and any functionalization.
  • Agglomeration, dispersion, impurities, solubility, and whether the material can dissolve or release components.
  • Exposure route and dose: possible routes include inhalation, ingestion, and skin contact; injection may be relevant in biomedical applications.
  • The product or process in which the material is used, and the controls that limit exposure.

Therefore, evaluating a specific material requires its composition and formulation details, plus information about the intended use and likely exposure. A general label such as “carbon dot” or “semiconductor dot” cannot substitute for that assessment. The EPA notes that research into nanomaterial effects, exposure, and risks is ongoing.

How to choose which comparison matters

  • For optical performance: compare the actual composition, size distribution, surface chemistry, and measured emission behavior. Do not assume size alone determines a semiconductor dot’s output or that every CQD has the same fluorescence.
  • For safety: identify the formulation and likely exposure route, then look for evidence relevant to that material and use. Comparative results from one animal study do not settle human or workplace safety.
  • For application claims: distinguish research proposals from demonstrated device uses. CQD reviews span many research areas, while the EPA lists concrete SQD examples and NIST’s photonics review covers a specialized emerging field.
