You can loop prepared video from a Debian machine to YouTube Live with FFmpeg, then supervise the encoder with systemd. First confirm the channel is eligible, create a live stream in YouTube Studio, and copy its server URL and private stream key. Next choose settings from YouTube’s current encoder guidance, test the feed, and monitor both FFmpeg and YouTube Studio. A working service process does not by itself guarantee a healthy, uninterrupted broadcast.
Before you begin: check channel eligibility and create the stream
YouTube says a channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16 to live stream. Check YouTube’s live streaming requirements before troubleshooting FFmpeg.

- Open YouTube Studio and create or select the live stream you intend to use.
- Copy the stream server URL and stream key from the stream’s settings. Prefer the RTMPS server URL when available; YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingest. See its encoder setup instructions and RTMPS guidance.
- Keep the key private. Do not paste a real key into a public repository, screenshot, article, or broadly readable service file. Use a placeholder such as
YOUR_STREAM_KEYin examples.
Choose an output profile YouTube and your Debian host can sustain
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video for RTMP/RTMPS, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (not more than four seconds), and frame rates up to 60 fps. Use YouTube’s current resolution and frame-rate bitrate table to select a bitrate; there is no single correct bitrate for every stream.
- Pick a resolution and frame rate your upload connection and encoding hardware can maintain, rather than selecting the maximum by default.
- Test the upload path at the chosen bitrate. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the real program, then checking stream health and messages in Studio.
- H.264 with AAC is a straightforward compatibility-oriented example, not the only supported codec combination. Select RTMPS where available.
- Confirm the local FFmpeg build actually includes the encoder you intend to use. Hardware-assisted encoding availability and performance depend on the host; no universal minimum CPU or benchmark is established here.
Install FFmpeg and understand the loop options
Install FFmpeg using the package available for your target Debian release, then inspect the installed version and available encoders before relying on an example from another system. Debian’s FFmpeg manual documents FFmpeg’s input/output model and option ordering. In general, options apply to the next input or output, so put input options before their -i and output options before the destination.

For a prepared file, -stream_loop -1 before the input tells FFmpeg to loop it indefinitely. -re paces file reading in real time for live output. The following is an illustrative command shape, not a tested command; adapt the ingest URL, codec availability, media characteristics, and bitrate to your setup and YouTube’s current guidance:

The example assumes your FFmpeg build has libx264. Check with the installed build’s encoder listing before running it. Replace the destination with the exact RTMPS ingest address and key from Studio, keeping the key secret.

If the source has no audio track, decide deliberately how to supply audio or a silent audio track rather than assuming every ingest setup will behave the same way. If you use separate video and audio playlists, plan their loop lengths and synchronization; a simple video loop does not solve that coordination.
Run FFmpeg under systemd
For unattended operation, run FFmpeg as a dedicated, restricted account that can access only the necessary media and configuration. Store the stream key in a suitably protected configuration or secret mechanism, not in a broadly readable unit file. The systemd service can restart FFmpeg when it fails, but this only supervises the process; it cannot prove that YouTube is receiving valid media.

A unit may use Restart=on-failure with a delay such as RestartSec=5s. Debian’s systemd manual recommends on-failure for long-running services and notes that restart attempts are subject to start-rate limits. Avoid a configuration that triggers a rapid, unbounded restart loop.

systemctl status your-serviceto inspect service state. - Use
journalctl -u your-serviceto review FFmpeg output and process errors. - Also inspect YouTube Studio’s preview, connection status, warnings, and stream health. A service can be active while ingest is rejected, the picture is frozen, or the network path is unhealthy.
Plan what “24/7” means on YouTube
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not establish what happens to one continuous broadcast after 12 hours, so do not assume that a single FFmpeg process will run forever or that a longer broadcast will be archived as expected. Check the current Studio behavior and choose an intentional schedule for restarts or shorter sessions if archiving, discoverability, or recovery matters. Treat 24/7 as an availability goal for the whole setup, not a guarantee of uninterrupted broadcasting. YouTube recommends testing the stream and monitoring its health. A process restart may recover an FFmpeg failure, but you still need to confirm that the encoder reconnects and Studio reports a healthy feed.

- You cannot start a live stream: check channel verification, the 90-day restriction condition, and the stated minimum age before changing encoder settings.
- YouTube rejects the connection: re-copy the server URL and key from the correct Studio stream, confirm you selected the RTMP/RTMPS ingest destination, and ensure the key has not been exposed or replaced.
- FFmpeg reports an unknown encoder: the installed build may not include the requested encoder. Inspect available encoders or choose one supported by that build.
- The stream buffers or shows poor health: compare the configured video bitrate with YouTube’s current table for your resolution and frame rate, then test whether the actual upload connection can sustain it.
- FFmpeg is active but the broadcast is bad: inspect Studio’s preview and health messages as well as service status and journal output. Process health and ingest health are different checks.
- The service repeatedly restarts: inspect the journal for the underlying FFmpeg error and systemd start-rate behavior; fix the cause and avoid rapid restart loops.
- Audio is missing or drifts from video: verify that the source includes audio or provide an intentional audio input, and account for synchronization when looping separate media inputs.
DIY costs and trade-offs
A self-hosted Debian setup gives you direct control and can make use of hardware you already own; it also means you are responsible for the machine, power, network connection, FFmpeg configuration, and recovery. A rented Linux server is another way to keep the encoder remote, but the right provider and total cost depend on your requirements; no universal price threshold or specific provider is established here. Hardware needs also vary by codec, source, and output profile, so do not treat any one machine specification as a general minimum.
