To show the current song on a 24/7 YouTube music stream, add a live-updating overlay to the outgoing video in OBS or comparable streaming software. The overlay needs both a source of current-track metadata and a visual layer in the stream. Changing the YouTube broadcast title or description updates video metadata; it does not add a changing label to the picture. Google describes a live broadcast as “an event that will be streamed, via live video, on YouTube.” Google’s Live Streaming API reference covers the broadcast resource; the overlay routes below put the track label into the transmitted image.
Choose the route that matches your music player
There is no universal now-playing bridge established for every player. Choose an integration designed for the app actually playing your music; a tool that reads VLC tags or YTMDesktop2 data should not be assumed to read another app or a YouTube browser tab.

Set up a VLC track label in OBS
This route suits a stream whose music comes from local files played through VLC. The OBS resource’s script reads tags from a VLC Video Source and can export the current song to a text file for OBS to display. Its instructions and compatibility details are on the OBS “Now Playing” resource page.

- Confirm the cited script’s listed environment: Linux, OBS 27.0 or higher with Python scripting enabled, and Python 3.
- Install Mutagen if you want the optional, recommended metadata-reading support described by the resource.
- Check that the files contain accurate title and artist tags. When tags are absent, the script can fall back to the filename, which may not be a useful display.
Configure and test
- In OBS, add the music player as a VLC Video Source and make sure it is the source actually playing the stream’s music.
- Install and configure the OBS script using the resource’s current instructions. The script detects the current song and reads available title, artist, and album tags.
- Choose a concise format, such as
{title} - {artist}, if the script’s formatting option is available in your setup. - If you use the script’s text-file export, add that file to OBS as a text source and place it over the video. Adjust font size, contrast, and position so the label remains legible over the background.
- Play several tracks and verify that the label changes. Test a long title and a file with incomplete tags so you know what viewers will see in those cases.
Set up a YTMDesktop2 overlay in OBS
If the stream’s music is playing in YTMDesktop2, its documented integration provides a local API and an OBS Browser Source URL. Follow the app’s YTMDesktop2 OBS documentation; the overlay reads that app’s playback data, not arbitrary players.

- Play a track and confirm the source updates before relying on it in a live broadcast.
The documentation gives a default local URL and says a paired client token must be included in the URL when authentication is enabled. Use the app’s current instructions for the exact URL. Treat any private token as a secret: do not publish it in screenshots, public pages, or other places viewers can access.
Consider metadata-enrichment alternatives carefully
The OBS “What’s Now Playing” resource history describes MusicBrainz support and fallback, templates, artwork, and handling for some metadata edge cases. That history is not a complete current setup guide, so check the resource’s latest compatibility and installation instructions before choosing it. It is an option to investigate if your current source does not provide useful metadata, not a guaranteed fix for every player.

Make the label readable and dependable
- Show the useful minimum. Title and artist usually identify a track; choose a compact text or ticker layout when screen space is tight.
- Test real edge cases. Check long titles, missing tags, and artwork behavior in your actual playback setup. VLC’s documented filename fallback may expose filenames rather than polished song details.
- Check transitions. Confirm that the label changes after a track ends and the next one starts.
- Check restarts. After restarting the player or OBS, verify that playback and the overlay reconnect and show current information.
- Keep the label within the picture. Preview the stream composition to ensure the overlay is not cropped or hidden by other graphics.
The cited software documentation describes metadata and overlay capabilities; it does not establish long-duration uptime, timing accuracy, recovery behavior, or reliability for a particular 24/7 setup. Check those behaviors in your own configuration rather than assuming they are guaranteed.

Keep the YouTube title separate from the on-screen label
YouTube’s broadcast and video resources have title and description fields, while an OBS overlay is a graphic included in the outgoing video. Updating the broadcast title or description therefore does not create a changing track label in the picture. For the visible now-playing information asked for here, use a metadata-driven overlay.
