How to Set Up a 10GbE NAS for a Video-Editing Studio

A practical guide to connecting a 10GbE NAS to editing workstations, choosing storage and file sharing, testing real projects, and backing up studio media.

To set up a 10GbE NAS for a video-editing studio, make sure the NAS, switch, workstations, and cabling all support compatible 10GbE connections, then choose storage and file-sharing settings for the team’s actual workload. Test editing tasks with the studio’s real projects before moving production media onto the system.

Plan around the editing workload

There is no one-size-fits-all NAS, drive count, RAID level, or cache configuration for every studio. Before choosing hardware, write down the requirements that will determine capacity, performance, and recovery needs:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Number of editors likely to work at the same time.
  • Editing applications and the operating systems on each workstation.
  • Camera formats, codecs, concurrent streams, and typical project sizes.
  • Usable storage required now and expected growth.
  • Budget, acceptable downtime, and how quickly projects must be restored after a failure.

These details matter because a 10GbE port sets a network capability, not a guarantee of editing performance. The disks, storage layout, NAS hardware, and number of simultaneous users can all affect the result. QNAP describes HDD storage with SSD cache and all-flash storage as alternatives for video-production workloads, rather than prescribing one configuration for every studio (QNAP’s video-storage guide).

Choose the NAS and storage

Select a NAS with built-in 10GbE or an explicitly supported upgrade path. Check the exact model’s supported network adapters, drives, firmware, and file-sharing services before buying. For example, Synology’s RackStation RS3621xs+ product page documents optional 10GbE upgrades; that capability should not be assumed for other models.

Footage stays stored locally, so you can review, manage, and share access without separate camera apps or cloud subscriptions.
  • 【USB & SD Instant Backup】Built-in SD card slot lets creators import photos and videos without an external card reader. Simply insert an SD card into the NAS, open the UGREEN NAS app, and copy or back up files to your selected folder in just a few clicks. Combined with USB-A 10Gbps, USB-C 10Gbps, USB 2.0, and 4K HDMI connectivity, DXP4800 GT helps you quickly transfer camera footage, media assets, or surveillance files—saving time and simplifying your workflow without relying on a computer.
  • 【Local Privacy, Pro-Grade Security】Store files locally on DXP4800 GT instead of third-party cloud servers, with local account mode for LAN-only access when needed. TLS/SSL, RSA, AES, and SHA-512 help secure logins and data transfers, while Security Manager, and flexible permissions provide continuous protection. RAID support adds data redundancy to help reduce the risk of data loss and improve file recovery in the event of drive failure.

Plan the storage array using usable capacity and the drive-failure tolerance you need—not just the sum of the drives’ advertised capacities. The right layout depends on the studio’s capacity target, workload, and recovery requirements; the available vendor guidance does not establish a universal RAID level or number of drives.

Compare storage approaches

Approach May suit Consider
HDD array Studios prioritizing capacity and evaluating storage for active media. Array throughput under concurrent editing matters as well as capacity; a 10GbE connection alone does not establish that the disks can sustain the workload.
HDD array with SSD cache Workloads where frequently accessed data can benefit from cache. Cache size and access patterns matter. Synology advises against SSD cache when frequently accessed data exceeds available cache or an application is always under high load (Synology’s SSD-cache considerations).
All-flash storage Studios considering an SSD-based system for their workload. Evaluate the cost and required capacity against the actual editing workload; the vendor guidance does not specify a universal capacity or performance target.

Build a compatible 10GbE network

For a shared studio setup, use a wired star topology: connect the NAS and each workstation that needs high throughput to a 10GbE switch. Count ports for the NAS, those workstations, uplinks, and planned expansion. QNAP’s Network & Switch Solution Guide covers NAS-to-switch networking and multi-NAS connectivity.

Match every connection in the path. Confirm whether the NAS, switch, and workstations use RJ45 copper or SFP+, then verify the required cable, DAC, or transceiver for those interfaces. If a workstation lacks built-in 10GbE, use a compatible network adapter or Thunderbolt-to-10GbE adapter and confirm support for its operating system and drivers. QNAP’s video-production workflow describes 10/25GbE or Thunderbolt connections; Synology documents optional 10GbE adapters for compatible NAS models on its RS3621xs+ page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A direct connection between a workstation and NAS is another possible topology, but plan separately for how other studio devices will reach the NAS. Do not assume a 10GbE NAS port gives every client a 10GbE path.

Set up file sharing and user access

  1. Enable a protocol supported by the clients and editing workflow. For macOS Final Cut Pro media storage, QNAP describes mounting the NAS over SMB, recommending SMB3, or using NFS (QNAP video-storage guide). Synology DSM documents SMB and NFS file services for Windows, macOS, and Linux clients (Synology DSM File Services).
  2. Create a shared folder for active projects. Keep its purpose clear and organize it to fit the studio’s project workflow.
  3. Grant access to named users or groups. Confirm that each editor can access the correct project folders and that permissions behave as intended.
  4. Test with the actual editing application. Mount the share and open a representative project before migrating the full media library.

Decide where cache, render files, and proxies belong

Source media and editor-generated scratch data can have different access patterns. Consider keeping editor cache, renders, and proxies on local workstation SSDs or a dedicated NAS SSD volume, then test the choice with a representative project. Do not add SSD cache on the assumption that it will automatically improve editing: Synology’s guidance identifies cases where cache may not help, including data sets larger than the cache and applications that are continuously under high load (Synology’s SSD-cache considerations).

Benchmark the complete editing path

Before production use, test from each workstation rather than relying only on the NAS specification or a single sequential-speed result. A sequential benchmark does not show whether a multi-editor timeline will remain responsive.

Protect projects with a separate backup

RAID can provide tolerance for some drive failures, but it is not a backup. Keep an independent copy of production media and project files, and test that the studio can restore them. Set the backup and restore plan around the acceptable data loss and recovery time established during workload planning.
