Best Alternatives to Google Home and Nest Speakers

Amazon Echo is the closest Alexa-based alternative, HomePod mini suits Apple households, and Sonos Era 100 is a music-first option—not a like-for-like Google Assistant replacement.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The best alternative depends on which part of Google Home or Nest you want to replace. Choose an Amazon Echo if you want a familiar voice-operated smart-home speaker and are comfortable switching to Alexa; choose Apple HomePod mini if your household uses Apple devices and Apple Home; consider Sonos Era 100 if music quality matters more than matching Google Assistant’s smart-home workflow.

These speakers are not interchangeable. Compare the assistant, your streaming services, smart-home device compatibility, sound, and multi-room needs before choosing.

Which Google Home alternative should you choose?

Option Best suited to Key consideration
Amazon Echo People willing to use Alexa for voice control and smart-home tasks Features differ by Echo model; check the exact model’s hub and protocol support.
Apple HomePod mini Households centered on Apple devices and Apple Home Confirm that your preferred music service works the way you expect; Spotify playback may require AirPlay from a phone rather than a direct Siri request.
Sonos Era 100 Listeners prioritizing music and speaker performance Treat it as an audio-focused choice, not a guaranteed replacement for Google Assistant’s full smart-home workflow.

TechRadar’s comparison, updated September 24, 2026, covers these alternatives and emphasizes that the right choice depends on assistant preference, existing devices, and audio priorities. Read the comparison.

Choose the voice assistant and ecosystem first

A speaker is only a useful replacement if its assistant fits how your household already works. Your phones, smart-home devices, voice routines, and music accounts can make a change from Google to Alexa or Siri inconvenient, even when the new speaker itself is appealing.

  • Choose Echo if you are prepared to use Alexa and its routines and compatible devices.
  • Choose HomePod mini if Apple devices and Apple Home are central to your household.
  • Choose Sonos Era 100 if you are mainly shopping for a music speaker and are willing to check its particular voice and service support.

Before buying, list the services you actually use and test whether the speaker can start playback by voice, not merely whether it can play the service through a phone or another app.

What each alternative does well—and where to check

Amazon Echo: the Alexa route

Echo is the most direct alternative among these choices for someone seeking a voice-operated smart-home speaker, provided they are willing to move to Alexa. TechRadar’s comparison identifies Echo Dot Max as including a smart-home hub and supporting Matter, Thread, and Zigbee, and describes it as offering more smart-home functions than a basic Echo Dot. Those features are model-specific, so verify the current Amazon listing for the exact Echo before relying on a protocol or hub.

Google Audio Bluetooth Speaker with Keychain LED - Wireless Music Streaming - Chalk
  • Google Audio Bluetooth Speaker Wireless Music Streaming - Chalk
  • Music here. Music there. Music everywhere - Create a home audio system that fills your home with sound.* Nest Audio works together with your other Nest speakers and displays, Chromecast-enabled devices, or compatible speakers. And it's easy to set up.
  • Rich, full sound. Room filling sound with 30 watt woofer, tweeter and tuning software. Cranks out powerful punchy music to fill your room
  • Connect with family and friends - Nest Audio helps you stay in touch. Just say, “Hey Google” to broadcast messages on every Nest speaker and display in the house. Use your Nest speakers as an intercom and chat from room to room.
  • Huge help around the house. You can say things like, "Hey Google, what's the weather this weekend?" Ask Google about the news or sports scores. - Includes LED Key Chain (Color May Vary)

Apple HomePod mini: for Apple households

HomePod mini is a compact Siri speaker and a sensible candidate when the household already uses Apple devices and Apple Home. Apple’s HomePod mini product page confirms the product. Check music-service behavior against your habits: TechRadar reports that Spotify playback requires AirPlay from an iPhone rather than a direct Siri request to play Spotify.

Sonos Era 100: for music-first listening

Era 100 belongs on a shortlist when sound and music listening come first. Sonos’s official product page provides current product information. TechRadar’s comparison favors it over compact assistant speakers for music quality, but the evidence does not establish that it duplicates Google Assistant’s complete smart-home workflow. Check the exact voice-assistant and streaming-service support you need before treating it as a replacement for a Nest speaker.

Amazon Echo Dot (newest model) - Vibrant sounding speaker, Designed for Alexa+, Great for bedrooms, dining rooms and offices, Deep Sea Blue
  • Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
  • Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
  • Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
  • Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
  • Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.

Check smart-home compatibility, not just the speaker name

Matter can make compatible smart-home devices work across certified smart-home apps, and Google says commands can be carried locally over Wi-Fi or Thread. But Matter is for smart-home device control; it is not an audio standard and does not guarantee a particular music catalog, voice assistant, speaker sound, or multi-room system. Verify support for the exact speaker and each light, lock, sensor, or thermostat you plan to use. TechRadar also distinguishes Matter compatibility from audio support in its smart-speaker comparison.

For Google Home specifically, Google says Matter setup and remote control require a Matter-enabled hub and that IPv6 must be enabled for Matter to work properly. These are Google Home setup requirements; do not assume they apply identically to Alexa or Apple Home. See Google’s Matter guidance.

Google hub support differs by protocol

Google’s device documentation separates hubs that support Matter over Wi-Fi from those supporting Matter over both Wi-Fi and Thread. Its listed Wi-Fi-and-Thread hubs include Google Home Speaker (2026), Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, Nest Wifi Pro, and Google TV Streamer. Nest Audio and Nest Mini are listed among Wi-Fi-only hubs. If you are keeping some Google equipment while changing speakers, check the hub entry for the exact device rather than assuming all Nest speakers support Thread. See Google’s current device and Matter information.

Compare the details that affect daily use

  • Assistant: Decide whether Alexa, Siri, or an audio-focused speaker setup best fits your household.
  • Music: Check your named streaming services and whether voice commands can start them directly.
  • Smart home: Verify Matter, Thread, Zigbee, and hub requirements for your existing devices; support varies by model and platform.
  • Room and sound: Match the speaker to the room and your listening priorities rather than assuming compact assistant speakers sound alike.
  • Grouping and TV: Confirm stereo pairing, multi-room grouping, and television integration on the specific platform and model.
  • Availability: Check current local availability and pricing, which can change by region and over time.

If camera feeds or visual controls are essential, compare smart displays separately: they solve a different need from a speaker-only alternative.
