You can keep a YouTube channel streaming around the clock by sending video continuously from an encoder to YouTube Live Control Room. First confirm the channel is eligible, then configure and test the encoder, network, and recovery plan. YouTube documents encoder workflows and recurring broadcasts, but does not guarantee that one live event can run indefinitely or remain one continuous archive.
What you need before starting
- A verified YouTube channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube’s getting-started guidance also says a user must be at least 16 to livestream. Check YouTube’s current live-stream eligibility guidance.
- A video source and an encoder. YouTube supports software encoders as well as hardware encoders; dedicated hardware is optional, though YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production-value events. See YouTube’s computer live-streaming tips.
- An upload connection that can sustain your chosen stream bitrate, with capacity reserved for a backup stream if you configure one.
- A plan for monitoring, recovery, and recording if the stream must continue beyond the period YouTube automatically archives.
Set up the encoder stream
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create, then Go Live, and choose the Stream workflow. Create a stream or select a scheduled one. YouTube recommends setting up an encoder at least two hours before an event; for a continuous channel, treat this as launch or maintenance preparation, not a recurring restart rule. - Choose an ingestion protocol supported by your encoder. RTMPS is RTMP encrypted with TLS/SSL. In Live Control Room, reveal the RTMPS server URL and enter it in the encoder’s server or URL field. HLS is another documented option for compatible encoders, but it has higher latency and specific segment and playlist requirements. Follow YouTube’s RTMPS instructions or HLS setup requirements.
- Copy the stream key into the encoder. Use the matching stream key field. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it with people who should not control the stream. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
- Configure the video and audio output. Choose a resolution, frame rate, and codec that your encoder and measured upload connection can sustain. YouTube publishes different H.264 recommended bitrate ranges and AV1/H.265 minimum and maximum ranges by output configuration; use its current table rather than guessing a bitrate: YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. Set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube recommends this and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Start sending the feed and check the preview. Start the encoder, then wait for the incoming video preview in Live Control Room. Check audio and picture before selecting Go live. YouTube recommends starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before a scheduled event; for 24/7 operation, use that as a launch or maintenance-window check, not a requirement to restart every 15 minutes.
- End or maintain the stream deliberately. YouTube’s documented shutdown process is to end the stream in Live Control Room and stop the encoder. For continuous operation, define who will monitor the encoder and how it will be restarted or failed over if it stops.
Choose a reliable bitrate and connection
Do not set the encoder to the highest available quality until you have measured the connection under realistic conditions. YouTube recommends upload bandwidth with 20% headroom beyond the combined bitrate of the primary and backup streams. A network interruption can break the stream, so include real operating margin rather than relying on a speed-test peak. YouTube’s guidance is in Streaming tips.

- Use YouTube’s bitrate table for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate; the recommended ranges are not interchangeable across those settings.
- If using a backup encoder or backup feed, count its bitrate in the bandwidth budget as well as the primary feed.
- Test the actual stream at the intended output settings and observe Live Control Room’s preview and stream health before leaving it unattended.
Test monitoring and recovery before going 24/7
YouTube recommends testing audio and motion similar to the real program, checking stream health, monitoring audio and video quality, and confirming that the stream can be viewed from the channel and watch pages, including on mobile devices. If you have a backup encoder, test its failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet connection, then verify what viewers see and how the backup takes over. These checks establish a recovery procedure; they do not guarantee uninterrupted service. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

- Preview is missing: confirm the encoder is sending to the correct server URL and stream key, and verify that the encoder has actually started output.
- Stream health is unstable: reduce the output bitrate or resolution to a level the measured connection sustains, then repeat the test with primary and backup bitrate included.
- Audio or video is wrong: test representative motion and sound before launch, check the encoder’s output configuration, and confirm the Live Control Room preview before going live.
- The stream stops: check whether the encoder or network stopped sending, then follow the tested restart or failover procedure. YouTube documents resetting a compromised stream key; after resetting it, replace the old key in the encoder.
Understand recurring streams and archives
For recurring scheduled events, Google’s Live Streaming API documentation describes reusing one liveStream resource by binding broadcast resources to it; in that API model, only one event is live at a time. YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. It does not promise one automatic archive for a stream that runs longer. If retaining a complete continuous recording matters, arrange and test a separate local or external recording strategy, and verify YouTube’s current limits before relying on an archive for a long-running stream.
