What Is Video Transcoding, and When Do You Need It for Live Streaming?

Video transcoding decodes and re-encodes a source for a delivery workflow. Learn when live streams need it, what to check, and how bitrate modes differ.

Video transcoding decodes an incoming video stream and encodes it into one or more outputs suited to a delivery workflow. You need it when your source does not meet the destination’s requirements, or when you need different versions for delivery—not simply because you are streaming live. If your existing feed already matches the output workflow, transcoding may not be necessary.

What video transcoding means

A video is encoded using a codec, a method for compressing and decoding audio or video. Transcoding changes that encoded representation: a system decodes the source and encodes it again, potentially using a different codec, resolution, bitrate, or other settings.

Transcoding is distinct from packaging. Packaging organizes encoded streams into a format or output group for delivery and playback. HLS, DASH ISO, Smooth Streaming, and CMAF are examples of adaptive-bitrate output group options in AWS MediaConvert documentation; they are not video codecs.

Where transcoding fits in a live workflow

A typical live-video path can be understood as:

Camera or contribution feed → ingest → decode and encode (transcoding) → output encoding and packaging → origin or delivery service/CDN → player

In AWS Elemental MediaLive’s documented workflow, a channel ingests source content, transcodes it by decoding and encoding, and packages it into output groups. Each stage has a different job: ingest receives the feed, transcoding creates the encoded output, packaging prepares outputs for a delivery workflow, and the origin, CDN, and player handle distribution and playback. A specific service’s workflow is an example, not a universal requirement that every stream pass through every stage in the same way.

When a live stream needs transcoding

Decide based on the source and destination, rather than assuming transcoding is mandatory. It may be needed when the incoming codec or media characteristics do not fit the selected output workflow, when viewers or distribution partners need multiple output encodes, or when the downstream delivery and playback setup requires a particular configuration.

  • The source is incompatible: The destination workflow does not accept the source codec or relevant media characteristics, so an encode in a compatible format is needed.
  • You need multiple renditions: Different encoded outputs may be required for the intended distribution workflow. Whether and how to create them depends on the destination’s requirements.
  • The output must meet a particular delivery setup: The required codec, encoding characteristics, or packaging can make transcoding part of preparing the stream.
  • The source already fits: If the incoming stream satisfies the selected workflow’s requirements and no different outputs are needed, transcoding may not be required.

Do not confuse transcoding with simply sending a compatible feed to a service, nor with packaging alone. A delivery system may perform some or all of these stages, but the terms describe different operations.

What to check before configuring a transcoding workflow

Requirements vary by platform and service. AWS MediaLive documentation highlights several checks for configuring a MediaLive workflow; these are service-specific considerations, not universal limits for every encoder or streaming destination.

  • Source codec: Confirm that the ingest workflow supports the codec being sent.
  • Maximum source bitrate: Determine the highest bitrate the source is expected to reach, rather than relying only on its average.
  • Upstream bandwidth: Make sure the connection sending the contribution feed can carry the expected source bitrate reliably.
  • Changing source characteristics: Check whether the codec or frame rate can change during the stream, because changes may affect how the workflow handles the feed.
  • Redundancy: For a standard redundant MediaLive channel with two pipelines, AWS says upstream bandwidth should be twice the anticipated maximum source bitrate. That guidance applies to this MediaLive configuration; it is not a general bandwidth rule for all live streams.

MediaLive input specifications describe codec, resolution, and maximum bitrate for billing and resource allocation. AWS also says the service inspects actual ingest to detect the source codec, resolution, and bitrate. These service details should not be treated as a substitute for checking the requirements of your own destination.

How bitrate control changes the output

Rate control is a trade-off between bitrate, visual quality, and bandwidth constraints. AWS MediaLive documents QVBR, VBR, and CBR for applicable codecs. Their behavior below describes those MediaLive settings; it is not a universal encoder prescription.

Mode How it behaves When it can fit Trade-off
QVBR Targets a quality level while respecting a maximum bitrate. AWS recommends it in its documentation when the publisher or viewers pay for bandwidth. If the maximum rate constrains a complex scene, the target quality may not be reached.
VBR Targets an average bitrate and varies the bitrate with content complexity, allowing short peaks up to the configured maximum. Useful in the MediaLive guidance when maintaining an average rate matters. Actual bitrate varies with the content, so peaks can be higher than the average.
CBR Holds the specified bitrate while visual quality varies with scene complexity. AWS says to choose it when distributing to devices that cannot handle variable bitrates. Complex scenes can look worse at the same fixed bitrate than simpler scenes.

There is no single best mode for every workflow. Consider whether the bandwidth ceiling or average rate is important, how much the scene complexity changes, and what the receiving system can handle.

Choosing codecs and delivery outputs

AWS MediaLive’s output encoding documentation lists AV1, H.264/AVC, HEVC/H.265, and MPEG-2 encoding schemes. Details such as profile, bit depth, chroma sampling, tier, and level vary by codec. A service listing a codec does not establish that every player supports every configuration of it.

Before choosing an output, check these factors together:

  • Packaging: Which delivery or output format does the downstream workflow require? Packaging formats are not interchangeable with codec choices.
  • Number of outputs: Does the workflow need one encoded stream or multiple renditions?
  • Quality and bandwidth: How should bitrate respond to scene complexity, and what maximum or average rate can the workflow sustain?
  • Operational design: Are source characteristics stable, and does the workflow require redundant pipelines?

Without a specific destination, player mix, and bandwidth requirement, a universal codec or bitrate recommendation would be misleading. Use the receiving service’s supported formats and configuration guidance as the constraint, then choose the output that fits that workflow.

Keep a YouTube channel live without transcoding the uploaded file

Transcoding is not the same as keeping a prerecorded video online as a live stream. StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos on YouTube; it does not go live from a camera. StreamNeo says it streams the uploaded video as made, with no re-encode, so it is an option for continuous playback rather than a tool to convert a source into a different encoded output.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To use it, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud service loops the video, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. StreamNeo also says it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.

Copyright and YouTube considerations

Technical compatibility does not establish that you have the right to stream the content. Before looping prerecorded video or sending a live feed, confirm that you have permission for the video, music, and other material in it, and follow YouTube’s applicable rules. Transcoding changes how content is encoded; it does not grant rights to use it.

Common workflow problems

  • The ingest is rejected or fails: Check the source codec and media characteristics against the receiving workflow’s supported input requirements.
  • The stream is unstable despite apparently adequate bandwidth: Compare upstream capacity with the maximum expected source bitrate, not just the average. If using the standard two-pipeline MediaLive configuration, apply AWS’s service-specific guidance to provision upstream bandwidth at twice that anticipated maximum.
  • Output quality drops in complex scenes: Review the chosen rate-control mode and its bitrate ceiling. With QVBR, a maximum-rate constraint can prevent the target quality from being reached; with CBR, quality changes as scene complexity changes.
  • A receiving device cannot play the output: Verify the codec configuration and packaging against that workflow and the intended players; a service’s supported-codec list does not prove universal player support.
  • The workflow behaves differently when the source changes: Check whether codec or frame rate changes during the stream and whether the ingest workflow can accommodate them.

Bottom line

Transcoding is needed when a live source must be converted to meet an output workflow’s requirements or to create different outputs. It is not an automatic requirement of live streaming. Check compatibility, source bitrate and stability, required renditions, rate-control trade-offs, packaging, and playback needs before deciding whether to transcode.
