For a 1080p60 YouTube livestream, set H.264 video to 17 Mbps, or use 12 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 (HEVC). YouTube lists lower minimums—6 Mbps for H.264 and 4 Mbps for AV1/H.265—but recommends the higher figures for this resolution and frame rate. Use constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval.
Recommended 1080p60 YouTube Live bitrate
The appropriate bitrate depends on the codec your encoder sends to YouTube. These are live-ingestion settings, not a single bitrate that applies to every codec.

| Video codec | YouTube-recommended bitrate | Listed minimum |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) | 12 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
These figures are YouTube Help’s recommendations for 1080p at 60 frames per second. The minimum is not the recommended target: choose the recommended bitrate when your connection and encoder can sustain it. Codec support depends on the encoder and the settings available in your streaming setup.
Encoder settings to use
Video and connection
- Resolution and frame rate: 1920 × 1080 at 60 fps.
- Codec: H.264 at 17 Mbps, or AV1/H.265 at 12 Mbps, if supported by your encoder and ingest configuration.
- Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Protocol: Prefer RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP, where your encoder supports it.
Advanced video options
YouTube’s encoder guidance also lists square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame and CABAC. For SDR, it specifies Rec. 709 color and 8-bit depth. Encoder menus may use different labels, and not every device exposes every advanced option.

Check your connection before going live
YouTube advises choosing a stream quality that your available internet connection can reliably sustain and recommends testing upload speed. It does not set a universal upload-speed margin above the configured video bitrate, so treat your measured connection and a representative test—not a blanket multiplier—as the practical check.
- Set the encoder to the intended stream settings. Use the codec-specific bitrate above, CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval.
- Run an upload-speed test. Check the connection from the location and network you will use for the stream.
- Do a representative preflight. Test with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast; a static screen or silent test may not expose the same issues.
- Start the stream and check YouTube’s stream health. Watch for health messages during the event and respond to issues rather than assuming the initial connection will remain stable.
If the connection cannot reliably sustain the target, lower the stream quality to a setting it can support, then test again. A bitrate setting alone cannot guarantee a stable live stream.

Live-stream bitrate is not upload bitrate
YouTube’s separate file-upload guidance lists 12 Mbps for 1080p high-frame-rate SDR uploads. That figure applies to encoding a video file for upload, not to 1080p60 live ingestion. The workflows differ: YouTube’s upload guidance describes MP4, H.264 and variable bitrate encoding, while its live guidance calls for CBR and recommends 17 Mbps for 1080p60 H.264.

When RTMP, RTMPS or another protocol matters
YouTube recommends RTMPS for its secure connection. Its guidance says HLS may be considered when an encoder cannot provide relevant capabilities through RTMP. These protocol notes do not change the 1080p60 SDR bitrate recommendations above.
