Use /setworldspawn to change the shared world spawn on a Minecraft server. In Java Edition, the command can use a position and facing angle, and the command issuer must have operator privileges. In Bedrock Edition, use the coordinate form and enable cheats; on a dedicated server, that means setting allow-cheats=true in server.properties.

The world spawn is different from an individual player’s respawn point. Use /spawnpoint when one player, or a group of players, needs a personal return location. The sections below show the exact commands, permission requirements, edition differences and checks to perform when players still appear somewhere other than the block you selected.

World spawn and player respawn are different settings
Minecraft has two command-controlled destinations that are often called a “spawn point.” Choosing the wrong command is the most common cause of an apparently unsuccessful change.

Changing the world spawn does not overwrite every player’s individual respawn setting. Conversely, setting a player’s respawn point does not move the shared world spawn. Decide which of those two outcomes you need before entering a command.

Command syntax by edition

Command details can change between Minecraft versions and server software. If a command is rejected even though the syntax below matches your edition, check the current command reference for the exact version running on the server.
Set the world spawn in Java Edition
Use the block beneath you
- Travel to the block that should act as the center of the shared spawn area.
- Stand on that block and turn toward the direction in which arriving players should face.
- Open in-game chat and enter
/setworldspawn, or run the same command from the server console. - If the in-game command is denied, grant the intended administrator operator status with
/op <username>, then run the spawn command again.
With no arguments, Java uses the command’s execution position. When you run it from chat, that is your current location. When you run it through a console or management panel, the execution context may not be a player standing on a block, so use explicit coordinates when you need a precise result.

Specify coordinates and facing explicitly
The Java form accepts a position followed by an angle:
/setworldspawn <x> <y> <z> <angle>For example:
/setworldspawn 100 70 100 -180This sets the world spawn at the supplied coordinates and makes the default facing direction north. The position identifies the spawn location; the angle controls the direction in which players are oriented when the world-spawn location is used. If you omit the angle, Java uses 0.0, which is due south.
Use relative coordinates when appropriate
Java command coordinates can be entered relative to the command issuer. A form such as /setworldspawn ~ ~ ~ is useful when you are already standing at the intended location but want the command to make that choice explicit. Relative values are resolved from the command’s execution position, so an explicit absolute position is safer when the command is run from a console or automation tool.
Set the world spawn in Bedrock Edition
Enable the required server setting
- Stop the dedicated server if your hosting panel requires configuration changes while it is offline.
- Open
server.properties. - Set the property to
allow-cheats=true. - Save the file and restart or reload the server according to the server software’s instructions.
For a locally hosted Bedrock world, enable cheats in the world’s settings before attempting the command. The exact menu labels can vary by platform, but the command will not run while cheats are disabled.

Enter the coordinate command
- Choose the destination coordinates and confirm that the area is safe and accessible.
- Run the following command from chat or the server console:
/setworldspawn x y zReplace x, y and z with the desired values. Bedrock’s syntax does not use Java’s optional angle argument in the form shown here. Bedrock accepts floating-point coordinates, which can be useful when the intended destination is not expressed as whole-number block coordinates.
Choosing coordinates that players can actually use
A command can be syntactically correct while the selected location is impractical. Before setting it, inspect the space around the destination.
- Check the vertical coordinate: make sure the destination is not inside solid blocks, below the usable floor or over an immediate drop.
- Provide a safe landing area: clear hazards and leave enough room for players to move when they arrive.
- Mark the location: use a distinctive structure or other landmark so administrators can find the exact coordinates later.
- Record the command: keep the final coordinate and, for Java, the angle in your server notes.
- Consider access: if the spawn is inside a protected region, confirm that new players can leave it and interact with the blocks they need.
When running Java from chat, standing on the intended block is the simplest way to align the command with a visible location. When using a console, absolute coordinates remove ambiguity about where the command is being executed.
Set one player’s respawn point instead
Use /spawnpoint when the goal is personal rather than global. This command changes the selected player’s individual respawn destination and leaves the world spawn untouched.
Set the command issuer’s point
In the simplest form, run /spawnpoint while at the desired location. The command targets the player issuing it, subject to the permissions of the edition and server.
Set a location for a named player
Use the player-target form supported by your edition and version, then provide the target coordinates. Check the command suggestions in chat if your server reports an argument error; syntax has varied across versions and server implementations.

Apply a point to every player
A host guide gives this example for applying the current execution location to all players:
/spawnpoint @a ~ ~ ~@a selects all players, while the tildes make the coordinates relative to the command’s execution position. This is still a per-player operation: it does not redefine the world’s shared spawn.

Java operator status
Java requires the command issuer to have OP status. An administrator can grant it with /op <username>. If you are using a control panel, the panel’s console account may already have the necessary authority; if it does not, use the panel’s documented permission or command mechanism rather than repeatedly changing the world.
Bedrock cheats
Bedrock requires cheats to be enabled for the world. On a dedicated server, the relevant property is allow-cheats=true. Changing the property after the server has started may not take effect until the server is restarted or the configuration is reloaded as required by that server software.
Command blocks and automation
A command block, scheduled function or administration panel can execute the command, but the execution position and permissions then come from that system rather than from a player. Use absolute coordinates for repeatable automation and test the command in a controlled area before attaching it to a recurring event.
How to verify the change
Do not assume that a successful command entry proves that every player will visibly appear on the exact block you selected. Verify both the stored setting and the server systems that may act afterward.

- Run the command once, without repeatedly changing the destination while testing.
- Have a test player who does not already have a personal respawn setting connect, or use another controlled test account.
- Observe where that player arrives when the server uses the world-spawn path.
- Separately test a player with an existing personal
/spawnpointso you can confirm that the personal setting remains independent. - Write down the edition, server version, coordinates, angle and installed plugins if the observed result differs from the command.
A test that uses only an established player can be misleading because that player may still have an individual respawn point. Test the world-spawn behavior and the per-player behavior as separate cases.

Spawn-radius behavior
Server settings can place players within an area around the world spawn rather than on the exact center block. The spawn-radius setting is one possible cause. A Minecraft Forum report describes players appearing about 15 blocks from a configured point even after /setworldspawn; the poster also reported that setting the radius to zero did not solve that particular case. Treat that report as a troubleshooting example, not as a universal distance or a guaranteed fix.
Check the active server configuration and restart or reload it when required. If changing the radius has no effect, continue with the plugin and world checks below instead of assuming the command failed.
World-protection plugins
Plugins can intercept a join or respawn event and send players to a protected lobby, region or custom location. WorldGuard was specifically identified in the forum report as a possible factor. Temporarily test in a controlled copy of the server, review region and spawn-related flags, and inspect plugin configuration for an override. Do not remove a protection plugin from a live server without a backup and a rollback plan.
A personal respawn point is taking precedence
If only certain players miss the world spawn while others arrive correctly, compare their individual settings. A previous /spawnpoint command can explain a player-specific result. Clear or replace that player’s personal point using the appropriate version of /spawnpoint, then retest separately from the world-spawn test.
The command ran in the wrong execution context
A no-argument Java command uses the location where it executes. Running it from a console, command block or remote panel can therefore produce a different location from the one an administrator intended. Reissue the command with absolute coordinates and, in Java, an explicit angle.
The wrong edition or syntax was used
Java’s optional angle parameter is not part of the Bedrock command form shown in this guide. Bedrock also requires cheats, while Java checks OP status. Confirm the edition before troubleshooting permissions or plugins; an argument error often means the command was copied from the other edition.

Changing server.properties while the server is running may not alter the active process. Save a backup, stop the server when appropriate, apply the change, restart it, and then run a fresh test. Hosting panels may maintain their own configuration screen, so verify that the panel did not overwrite the file on the next restart.
Practical command patterns
Java: spawn at your current location
/setworldspawnUse this while standing on the desired block. Java uses your current position and the default angle of 0.0 when no arguments are supplied.
Java: fixed location and direction
/setworldspawn 100 70 100 -180This example sets coordinates 100 70 100 and the north-facing angle specified by the example. It is appropriate for a console or a documented server setup where the destination must not depend on who runs the command.
Bedrock: fixed coordinates
/setworldspawn 100 70 100Run this after enabling cheats or setting allow-cheats=true on a dedicated server. Supply floating-point values when the destination requires them.

/spawnpoint @a ~ ~ ~This applies a per-player respawn point to all selected players. It does not alter the shared world spawn and should not be used as a substitute for /setworldspawn.
Edition and version checklist
- Identify whether the server is Java Edition or Bedrock Edition before copying a command.
- For Java, confirm that the administrator running the command has OP status.
- For Bedrock, confirm that cheats are enabled; dedicated servers need
allow-cheats=true. - Choose between the world-wide
/setworldspawncommand and the player-specific/spawnpointcommand. - Use explicit coordinates when the command is run from a console, command block or automation system.
- For Java, include an angle when player orientation matters.
- Test with a player who does not have a conflicting personal respawn point.
- If the result is offset, inspect
spawn-radius, protection plugins such as WorldGuard and any lobby or join-teleport system. - Check the current command reference for the exact Minecraft and server-software version in use, because behavior and syntax can change.
Final answer
For a shared server destination, use /setworldspawn: Java accepts an optional position and angle and requires OP status; Bedrock uses coordinates and requires cheats, including allow-cheats=true on a dedicated server. For an individual player’s return location, use /spawnpoint instead. If players still appear away from the chosen area, investigate spawn-radius settings, plugins and existing personal respawn points before changing the command again.
