Most SCP: Secret Laboratory servers are configured for 20 players. That is the standard max_players value cited in server-configuration guides, not a confirmed hard limit built into the game engine. Hosts can raise the setting when their hardware and network can handle it.

Official-server capacity is a separate question. A Steam community post says Northwood’s official-server policy limits official servers to 25 players, and an official European server listing shows a 25-player capacity. However, the current policy document was not available for verification, so treat 25 as a reported official-server ceiling rather than a guaranteed rule for every current release.

The safest answer is therefore: 20 by default, configurable above 20, with 25 reported for official servers and no independently confirmed universal hard cap.
What “support” means in SCP: Secret Laboratory
Player-count questions often mix three different limits. Separating them prevents a server owner from treating a configuration default, an operator’s panel limit and an official-server rule as if they were the same thing.

The default configuration value
max_players = 20 is the normal starting point cited by configuration references. A fresh or conventionally configured server will therefore advertise space for 20 players unless its owner changes the value. This explains why many public listings stop at 20 even though the software may accept a larger number.
The practical software limit
Commercial hosting documentation describes max_players as having “No hard cap” and recommends raising it only when the machine can support the extra load. That wording should be read as operational guidance, not as a promise that an arbitrarily large server will remain playable. The documentation does not provide a tested maximum, a concurrency benchmark or a guarantee for every game version.

The official-server policy limit
Official servers can follow rules that do not apply to privately operated servers. A Steam community post, roughly 1,200 days old according to its own timeline, says official SCP servers must follow Northwood’s official-server policy and that one requirement limits capacity to no more than 25 players. The same post says the restriction was not always in place. Because the underlying policy document was not retrieved, the statement is best treated as a historical, secondhand report. An official Northwood EU server listing showing 25 capacity is consistent with it, but a listing alone does not prove that the rule still applies to every official server.

Why do SCP: Secret Laboratory servers often have only 20 players?
Twenty is prominent because it is the standard configuration value, not because available evidence proves the engine cannot handle more. The official English wiki’s server-information guidance reportedly recommends around 20 players for optimal operation and warns that larger populations can run more slowly and become unbalanced.
That advice reflects two constraints:
- Performance: more connected players create additional networking, game-state and server-simulation work. A host that is comfortable at 20 may experience latency or slower updates at a higher count.
- Game balance: SCP: Secret Laboratory’s round structure and role distribution are designed around a certain population. Adding players can make areas crowded, increase combat density and alter the intended relationship between human, SCP and other roles.
Consequently, “the server allows 40” and “40 players is a good experience” are different claims. The first concerns configuration; the second depends on hardware, network conditions, map activity and how the round plays with a larger population.
How to change the maximum player count
The exact file location and panel layout vary by host, but the setting itself is the same: max_players. Make one change at a time and keep a copy of the original configuration so you can recover quickly.

Method 1: Edit the server configuration file
- Stop the SCP: Secret Laboratory server from its hosting control panel or service manager. Editing while the process is writing its configuration can overwrite your change.
- Open the server’s configuration file and find the
max_playersentry. - Replace the existing number with the capacity you want, such as
25or30. Keep the key name and file syntax unchanged. - Save the file, then start the server again so it reads the updated configuration.
- Check the server browser or connection screen and confirm that the displayed capacity matches the new value.
If the value returns to 20 after a restart, check whether the host generates configuration files from a template, whether you edited the active instance rather than a backup, and whether the service account can write to the file.
Method 2: Use a hosting panel
- Open the server’s configuration or startup-settings page.
- Locate the field labelled
max_playersor an equivalent maximum-player setting. - Enter the desired number within the panel’s accepted range. Nodecraft’s published guide gives 60 as an example of a panel maximum.
- Apply or save the change, then use the panel’s restart control if it requires a restart to load configuration changes.
- Verify the capacity in the server listing after the instance is online.
A panel may reject a number even when the game itself could accept it. That rejection is a host-product restriction, not proof of a universal SCP: Secret Laboratory cap.
Choosing a sensible cap for a private or community server
Use the smallest capacity that serves your expected audience, then increase it gradually while watching stability. The figures below are operating choices, not guaranteed performance tiers.

Do not advertise a capacity merely because a control panel accepts it. Test the actual workload with your community, monitor disconnects and delayed actions, and be prepared to lower the setting when round quality declines.

The 25-player figure deserves careful wording because it comes from two related but incomplete pieces of evidence. First, a Steam post summarizes an official-server policy requirement of no more than 25 players. The post is not itself the policy and does not identify its author as a Northwood developer. Second, a Northwood Official Server EU listing shows a capacity of 25, which demonstrates that at least one official listing used that value.
Those facts support saying that official servers have been reported at 25 players. They do not support saying that every version, region or future official server must use 25, nor do they establish a 25-player engine ceiling for privately hosted servers. If you operate an official server, check the current policy through Northwood’s own announcements or official community channels before relying on the older report.
Troubleshooting a server that will not use the new value
The browser still shows 20
- Confirm that the edited key is exactly
max_players, including spelling and underscores. - Make sure the server was restarted after saving the change.
- Check that you edited the active server instance and not a local copy or unused template.
- Look for a host-panel setting that overwrites the file during startup.
The panel rejects the number
Panels enforce their own input ranges. A value above the panel’s maximum must be discussed with the host; changing the file may be overwritten or blocked. Nodecraft’s published example accepts up to 60, while another vendor’s commercial material claims 100, showing why panel limits cannot be treated as a game-wide specification.

The server starts but performance worsens
Lower the value in steps rather than making several other changes at once. If larger rounds produce slower updates, delayed interactions or frequent disconnects, return to 20 or another stable value. The wiki guidance that larger servers can run slower and become unbalanced is a reason to prioritize round quality over a high number in the listing.
Bottom line for players and server owners
For players looking for a normal SCP: Secret Laboratory round, expect about 20 slots on a typical server. For operators, treat 20 as the baseline, raise max_players only after confirming that your host permits it, and evaluate the result in real play rather than assuming that a larger number is automatically supported. The 25-player figure applies to reported official-server practice, not a verified universal limit, while claims of 60 or 100 describe particular hosting products rather than an official game specification.
