These methods have different scopes. BuildCreate is described by hosting guides as a server-wide creative-mode switch, while administrator commands let you limit debugging and item access to approved accounts. Check the game version before editing any configuration: version 3.x changed where many settings are stored, and the current presence of BuildCreate is not confirmed by an official reference.

Decide whether the entire server should have creative tools or whether cheats should be restricted to administrators. The choice determines both the configuration change and the commands you use.

Prepare the server and protect the save
Stop the server before editing its configuration. A running service can overwrite your change when it shuts down, and an XML file with a malformed tag may prevent startup. Make a copy of the current save and configuration first so you can restore the previous state if the server fails to load or players use creative tools in an unintended way.

- Record the server’s exact game version and the version shown by your hosting panel, if applicable.
- Identify whether you are editing a dedicated server’s files or only changing options in a local game. The steps below target a dedicated server.
- Keep a backup of
serverconfig.xmland the world save outside the server directory. - Tell players when cheats are being enabled. Creative inventory and God Mode can permanently change progression and the economy of a shared world.
Enable creative mode for every player with BuildCreate
1. Locate the configuration file
Find the dedicated server’s serverconfig.xml. Hosting panels commonly expose it through a file manager, while self-hosted installations place it in the server’s configuration directory. Do not edit a similarly named local-options file by mistake.
2. Find the BuildCreate property
Older server guides show this line:
<property name="BuildCreate" value="false" />Change only the value to true:
<property name="BuildCreate" value="true" />The documented default is false. Preserve the quotation marks, slash and XML spelling exactly. Do not add a second BuildCreate entry; duplicate properties can produce unpredictable results.
3. Save, start and test
- Save the file as plain text with the original filename and extension.
- Start or restart the server so it reads the setting.
- Join with a normal player account and check whether creative-mode access is available.
- Ask a second non-administrator account to test as well if the purpose is server-wide building. This confirms that access is not limited to your own administrator session.
Host guides describe BuildCreate=true as enabling creative mode for all players. One hosting source also claims that this marks the server as “Modded” in the server browser, but that behavior has not been confirmed by an official source. Treat any browser label as a possibility rather than a guaranteed result.
When BuildCreate is missing
Do not invent a replacement property if the line is absent. A guide covering version 3.x says that roughly thirty gameplay settings were moved out of serverconfig.xml; the exact count and current property names are not verified. Version 3.x may therefore use a different configuration path, or your provider may generate the file dynamically. Check the version-specific documentation supplied by your server host before adding an unfamiliar setting.
An older 2016 example is evidence of how the property was written at that time, not proof that every current build still accepts it. If the server ignores the line, remove the added entry, restore your backup and use the administrator-only method while you verify the current configuration format.

Give cheats to selected players with administrator permissions
For a shared survival server, administrator-only access is usually the more controlled option. Leave BuildCreate set to false, then grant level 0 to each approved account.

1. Join the server and open its console
Connect to the server with the account that will manage permissions. Press F1 to open the in-game console. The account running the command must already have permission to manage administrators; a regular player cannot promote itself.
2. Identify the player name or ID
Use the player-list commands supplied by the server:
lplists connected players and their IDs.lpiprovides an ID that can be used for an offline player.admin listdisplays accounts that currently have administrator status.
Use an exact player name when the person is online. A name-based command works only while that player is connected. An ID is the better choice for an offline player because it remains the identifier used by the server.
3. Grant full administrator level
Run:
admin add <name or ID> 0Replace the bracketed text with the player’s actual name or ID, without angle brackets. Level 0 is full administrator access. The default player level is 1000, so a player at the default level does not have these privileges.

Check the result with admin list. If the account does not appear, verify the spelling, use the numeric ID and run the command again while the server is fully online.
4. Revoke access when the task is finished
Remove an administrator with:
admin remove <name>Use the same name recorded in the administrator list. Removing access does not undo items spawned, terrain changed or time advanced while cheats were active, so review the world separately if the session was intended to be temporary.
Turn on the Debug Menu, God Mode and Fly Mode
Use the dm command
With administrator permission in place, press F1 and enter:
dmdm toggles the Debug Menu. After it is enabled, press Esc to access controls described by the community wiki, including God Mode and Fly Mode. The menu also exposes time and speed sliders and diagnostic actions such as killing your character, setting a position, adding a light and recalculating light.

Understand the Creative Menu interaction
The wiki notes that typing dm and pressing Enter can also enable the Creative Menu and related functions. Because the references describe dm primarily as the Debug Menu toggle, do not assume that every build exposes exactly the same controls. If the item browser does not appear, run cm explicitly.
Turn on the Creative Menu and open the all-items inventory
Open the F1 console and run:
cmcm toggles Creative Menu access. Press U to open the inventory interface containing every item. This is useful for testing a build, replacing a lost block or staging an event without giving every player server-wide creative access.
Creative Menu access does not by itself explain whether God Mode or Fly Mode is active. Use dm for those debug abilities and check the Esc menu before assuming your character is invulnerable or airborne.
Use the in-game Cheat Mode option carefully
The community wiki describes a Cheat Mode option in the game’s Advanced tab. That option controls access to the Creative Menu from the client-facing game settings. The same wiki states that the Debug Menu must be enabled with dm for God Mode.
The available references do not explain how this Advanced-tab option interacts with a dedicated server’s BuildCreate property. Treat them as separate controls: use the server configuration for the host-guide method, and use administrator permissions plus console commands for controlled access. Do not promise players that changing their local Advanced setting will override a server that has disabled creative access.
What console editions can and cannot do
The community wiki states that console versions do not support cheats beyond Creative Menu access. The PC dedicated-server commands in this guide—editing serverconfig.xml, granting level 0 with admin add, and using dm—should not be assumed to work on a console edition.
If you are hosting on a console, use the Creative Menu option exposed by that edition and its current game interface. Do not copy PC XML or F1-console instructions into a console-hosting workflow.

Troubleshoot the most common failures
The server starts, but players still cannot use creative tools
- Confirm the server was restarted after saving the file.
- Check that the value is exactly
true, notTrue,1or a second duplicate property. - Verify that you edited the active server’s file rather than a local or unused copy.
- Check the game version. Version 3.x changed configuration layout, and current support for the older
BuildCreateentry is not confirmed.
The admin command is rejected or has no effect
- Open the console with F1 while connected to the intended server.
- Use
lporlpito obtain the exact player identifier. - Run
admin add <name or ID> 0with no extra punctuation. - Check
admin listto confirm that the account was added. - If you used a name for an offline player, repeat the command with that player’s ID.
dm works, but God Mode or Fly Mode is not visible
Run dm again to verify that the toggle changed, then press Esc and inspect the Debug Menu. The wiki specifically links God Mode to an enabled Debug Menu; Creative Menu access alone does not guarantee those controls.
cm works, but the item inventory does not open
After entering cm, close the console and press U. If the inventory still does not appear, run dm once because the wiki reports that Debug Mode can also enable Creative Menu-related functions. Confirm that you are using the PC interface and not a console edition with different controls.
The server browser shows a Modded label
A host guide claims that enabling server-wide creative mode flags the server as “Modded.” That behavior is unverified, so do not use the browser label as proof that BuildCreate loaded correctly. Test with a non-administrator account instead.
Operational safeguards for a cheat-enabled server
- Keep a dated backup before enabling creative or debug tools.
- Use administrator-only commands when only builders or moderators need access.
- Record who received level 0 and remove the permission with
admin removeafter the maintenance session. - Separate a testing world from a progression world when possible.
- Tell players whether creative access is temporary, server-wide or limited to named administrators.
- After changing configuration, verify both an administrator account and an ordinary player account so you know the scope is what you intended.
The practical decision is straightforward: use BuildCreate=true only when everyone should have creative mode and your current server version supports that property; otherwise keep it false, grant level 0 to specific accounts, and use dm for debugging or cm for the all-items inventory.
