To limit a child’s PlayStation Store spending on PS5, sign in as the family manager, then open Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management, select the child, choose Parental Controls > Monthly Spending Limit, enter the amount, and save. New child accounts start with a monthly limit of 0. For an adult account, use Settings > Users and Accounts > Account > Payment and Subscriptions > Purchase Settings, then enable Require Password at Checkout.
Which PlayStation control do you need?
PS5 has two different purchase safeguards, and they solve different problems. A Monthly Spending Limit controls how much a child account can spend during a month. Require Password at Checkout asks for the adult account’s sign-in password whenever that account buys something from the PlayStation Store.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
The controls are account-based rather than console-based. A spending limit follows the child’s PlayStation Network account, while checkout-password protection follows the adult account on every device that uses it. Neither setting is a substitute for the other.
| Control | Account covered | What it does | Where it applies | Who can change it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly Spending Limit | Child account | Caps the child’s PlayStation Store purchases at a monthly amount | Purchases charged against the family manager’s wallet | Family manager or an authorized parent/guardian with permission |
| Require Password at Checkout | Adult account | Requires the account sign-in password before completing a purchase | All devices using that PlayStation Store account | The adult account holder |
The checkout-password setting does not apply to child accounts and does not protect wallet top-ups. A child using an adult account also receives that adult account’s access, so child controls do not apply. For a family, separate accounts are the foundation of reliable limits.

How to set a child’s monthly spending limit on PS5
You must sign in as the family manager or as a parent/guardian whose role includes permission to change the child’s settings. A child cannot change this control from the child account.
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Select Family and Parental Controls.
- Choose Family Management. If prompted, authenticate as the family manager or authorized adult.
- Select the child’s account from the family list.
- Open Parental Controls.
- Select Monthly Spending Limit.
- Enter the maximum amount the child may spend in a month and save the setting.
When a child account is created, Sony sets its monthly spending limit to 0. That blocks purchases until the family manager deliberately assigns an amount. Leaving the value at 0 is the appropriate choice when you want the child to browse the store without buying.
What the limit actually restricts
The limit applies to the child account’s PlayStation Store purchases. The child does not receive an independent payment wallet for this purpose. Eligible purchases draw on the family manager’s wallet, and the child’s total cannot exceed the amount assigned for that month.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe limit is a monthly allowance, not a per-transaction ceiling. A child could use the available allowance in one purchase or across several purchases until the assigned amount has been reached. If the allowance is exhausted, further child purchases cannot use that month’s remaining allowance.
Think of the setting as two linked permissions: the child account must be allowed to spend, and the family wallet must have funds or an available payment method. Increasing the allowance does not put money in the wallet, and adding wallet funds does not increase the allowance. Both conditions matter before a purchase can succeed.
Changing the amount later
Return to the same Monthly Spending Limit screen whenever you need to raise, lower, or remove the allowance. Use a lower value for a temporary restriction, such as during school exams, and restore the normal amount when appropriate. Setting the value back to 0 stops additional child-account spending.
After changing the amount, save it and revisit the child’s profile to confirm the new value is displayed. If more than one adult manages the family, tell the other authorized adults when you change the allowance so nobody unintentionally raises it again.
How to require a password for PS5 purchases
This setting is for an adult PlayStation Network account. It adds a confirmation step at checkout by requesting that account’s sign-in password.

- Open Settings on the PS5.
- Select Users and Accounts.
- Choose Account.
- Open Payment and Subscriptions.
- Select Purchase Settings.
- Turn on Require Password at Checkout.
After it is enabled, the password prompt appears when the adult account makes a PlayStation Store purchase. Sony describes the setting as applying across devices that use the same PlayStation Store account, so enabling it on the PS5 also protects purchases made with that account elsewhere.
This is an identity check, not a spending budget. It does not decide how much an adult may spend, and it does not convert an adult profile into a supervised child profile. Anyone who knows the adult account password may still complete purchases, so keep that password private.
What the password prompt does not cover
The control confirms purchases; it does not authorize funding the wallet. Wallet top-ups are outside its scope, so anyone who can reach the account’s wallet-funding flow may still be able to add funds unless you secure that process separately.

If a child signs in to an adult profile, the child-account spending limit is bypassed because the profile is still classified as adult. Use a separate child account rather than sharing an adult login.
How family roles affect the settings
The family manager controls the family structure, can add members, manage child restrictions, add payment methods or wallet funds, and assign spending allowances. A parent or guardian can adjust controls only within the permissions granted to that role.
Child members cannot add payment methods or add wallet funds. This separation matters because the monthly allowance governs purchases made by the child account, while the family manager remains responsible for the wallet from which those purchases are charged.
If a setting is unavailable, check the role before troubleshooting the console. Being an adult family member does not automatically mean you can change every child setting; the family manager must assign the appropriate parent or guardian permissions.

The PlayStation Family app also provides mobile access to a child’s spending limit and other parental controls. The available controls are tied to the signed-in family role, so use the family manager or an authorized parent/guardian account rather than the child’s login.
The console, website, and app are management surfaces for the same family relationship. Changing the child’s allowance in one place should be treated as changing the account setting, not as creating a separate mobile-only or console-only limit. Always verify that you selected the intended child before saving.
How a purchase moves through the family wallet
Understanding the payment flow helps explain why a child can have a spending limit without having a payment card. The family manager adds the payment method or wallet funds. A child account then initiates a PlayStation Store purchase, but the charge is taken from the family manager’s wallet. The child’s assigned monthly amount is the cap on that activity.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe wallet balance and the child’s allowance are separate concepts. Adding more money to the family manager’s wallet does not raise the child’s limit. Conversely, increasing the child’s allowance does not add money to the wallet; it only permits the child to use more of the funds already available there.
Because checkout-password protection does not cover wallet funding, secure the family manager account and payment methods even when a child’s monthly allowance is set to 0. The safest arrangement is a separate child account, a deliberate allowance, and an adult account that is not left signed in for unsupervised use.
This arrangement also clarifies responsibility. A child can request a purchase, but the family manager controls the source of funds and the maximum the child account may use. If the wallet has no usable funds, the allowance alone cannot complete a transaction; if the wallet is funded but the allowance is 0, the child account remains blocked.
Recommended setup for common family situations
You want to block all child purchases
- Keep the child account’s Monthly Spending Limit at 0.
- Do not let the child use an adult account.
- Keep the family manager’s sign-in credentials private.
- Review who has parent/guardian permissions in Family Management.
- Secure wallet-funding access, because the checkout-password setting does not protect top-ups.
You want to give a fixed monthly allowance
- Assign the intended amount in Monthly Spending Limit.
- Explain that the amount is shared across the child’s purchases for that month, not available separately for every game.
- Check the allowance before approving an exceptional purchase or changing the amount.
- Keep the child on the child profile so purchases are counted against the intended account.
Several people use one PS5
- Use an individual PlayStation Network profile for each person.
- Apply child controls to child profiles rather than relying on the console’s general users.
- Enable Require Password at Checkout on each adult account that stores payment information.
- Sign out after using an adult account on a shared console.
- Do not assume that protecting one adult account protects purchases made from another account.
Security practices that prevent accidental purchases
Sony recommends creating a separate child account for each child. Sharing an adult profile gives the child the adult account’s access and means parental controls do not apply. Separate profiles also make it possible to assign and review an allowance for the correct person.
Sign out after using an adult account, particularly on a console that guests or children can access. Use the account’s password and available passcode tools to reduce unauthorized purchases. Do not disclose the adult account password to a child who should be restricted by a monthly allowance.

Check the family roster periodically. An adult who no longer needs parent/guardian privileges should not retain them, and an account that is meant to be restricted should be listed as a child member rather than as an adult account.
When a purchase problem occurs, record which account was active, whether it was a child or adult profile, and whether the transaction was a purchase or a wallet top-up. Those distinctions point to different controls and prevent changing the wrong setting.

“Monthly Spending Limit” is not visible
- Confirm that you are in Family Management and have selected a child account.
- Make sure you are signed in as the family manager or an authorized parent/guardian with the relevant permission.
- Check that you did not select an adult account; the monthly allowance is a child-account control.
- If you are using the app or website, sign in with the same family-management role that can change the setting on the console.
- Verify that you are editing the intended family member rather than viewing the family roster only.
The child can still buy items
- Verify which account is being used at checkout. A child using an adult profile is not governed by the child allowance.
- Confirm that the child account’s amount was saved and is not higher than intended.
- Check whether the purchase is actually being made by the family manager or another adult account.
- Review the family member list and parent/guardian permissions.
- Confirm that the transaction is a store purchase, not an adult-account wallet top-up.
The password prompt does not appear
- Open the adult account’s Purchase Settings and verify that Require Password at Checkout is enabled.
- Confirm that the purchase is being made with the adult account on which the setting was enabled.
- Remember that wallet funding is excluded, so the setting will not necessarily prompt during a top-up.
- For a child account, use Monthly Spending Limit instead; the checkout-password option is not the child-account control.
- Make sure you are testing a purchase flow rather than changing account or wallet settings.
The child cannot add money
That is expected under Sony’s family rules. Child members cannot add payment methods or wallet funds. The family manager handles wallet funding, while the child’s purchases remain subject to the assigned monthly amount.
The allowance seems wrong on another device
Remember that the limit belongs to the child account, not to one particular PS5. Confirm that the same PlayStation Network account is signed in and that you are not comparing it with a different child or adult profile. For an adult, checkout-password protection likewise follows the account across devices.
A practical verification checklist
After configuring the controls, verify the setup in this order:
- Confirm every child has an individual child account.
- Open the child’s Family Management profile and check the saved Monthly Spending Limit.
- Confirm the child is not using an adult profile on the PS5.
- Review which adults are family managers or authorized parent/guardians.
- On each adult account that can buy games, check Purchase Settings and enable Require Password at Checkout.
- Secure the family manager account, payment method, and wallet-funding access.
- Sign out of adult accounts when leaving a shared console unattended.
- Test your understanding by identifying whether a future transaction would be a child purchase, adult purchase, or wallet top-up.
This combination separates allowance control from adult purchase authentication. The child account receives only the spending permission you assign, while adult accounts require explicit password confirmation at checkout.
When to use each control
Use Monthly Spending Limit when the question is “How much may this child spend this month?” Use Require Password at Checkout when the question is “Should this adult account prove its identity before buying?” If both adults and children use the console, configure both controls: the allowance governs child accounts, and the password prompt protects adult-account purchases.
