These controls have different billing scopes. You can also set age-related content limits and restrict game access or play time.
Choose between blocking purchases and approving them
Apple offers two distinct approaches. Blocking in-app purchases creates a hard stop for Apple In-App Purchases. Ask to Buy instead lets an eligible child send a purchase request for a parent or guardian to approve or decline. On Google Play, you can require approval for in-app purchases rather than approving all purchase types.

Before changing settings, identify the child’s device, account, and store billing method. A store control should not be treated as proof that every payment route in a game is disabled: Apple’s control covers Apple In-App Purchases, while Google’s approval settings cover purchases made through Google Play billing. Check the game’s payment flow and the account’s purchase history if you need to verify how a charge was made.
Block in-app purchases on an iPhone or iPad
Screen Time must be enabled before you can block purchases. On the child’s iPhone or iPad:

- Open Settings > Screen Time and turn on Screen Time if it is not already enabled.
- Go to Apps & Websites > App Store > In-app Purchases.
- Choose Blocked.
Apple also documents requiring a password for future purchases. For a child in a Family Sharing group, Ask to Buy is an alternative when available: open Settings > Family > child’s name > Apps & Websites > Restrictions > Ask to Buy, then choose Require Purchase Approval. The child can request a purchase, and the parent decides whether to approve it. - Open the Family Link app and select the child.
- Tap Controls > Google Play > Purchases & download approvals > Require approval for.
- Choose In-app purchases only.
A family manager can also manage a family member’s purchase approvals in Google Play: tap the profile picture, then open Settings > Family > Manage family members, select the family member, and open Purchase approvals. Available choices include approval for all content, purchases using the family payment method, in-app purchases only, or no approval.

Approval requests can be reviewed in Family Link or in the Play Store’s approval request area. Keep notifications enabled for Family Link and Play Store if you depend on alerts to see requests. Google’s setting applies only to purchases made through Google Play’s billing system; it does not establish that a game’s other payment routes are covered. Limit game content and access
iPhone and iPad: age ratings, apps, and play time
Apple’s Screen Time Content & Privacy Restrictions can limit apps and other content by age rating. Apple’s family guide also describes blocking specific apps, limiting game-related Game Center interactions, scheduling access, and setting daily Time Allowances for app categories such as Games. These are separate from purchase blocking: use the access and content controls for what a child can open or when, and purchase controls for spending.
Android: maturity restrictions in Google Play
Google Play content restrictions let a parent limit downloads or purchases by maturity level. Configure them on each Android device where you want the restriction: Google says these settings are device-specific. They also do not prevent restricted material from appearing in search results or through a direct link. See Google’s instructions for setting up Google Play content restrictions.

What these controls do—and do not—cover
- Apple purchase block: blocks Apple In-App Purchases; do not assume it disables a game’s separate payment route.
- Google Play approval: governs purchases made through Google Play billing, not all possible ways a game might collect money.
- Google Play content restrictions: apply only on the device where they are configured and do not hide every restricted title from search or direct links.
- Availability: menus and features can vary by operating system version, child’s age, and region. Apple says its enhanced Screen Time experience requires supported current OS versions across Family Sharing devices.
If an option is missing, check the child’s account and device configuration, confirm Screen Time or Family Link is set up, and consult the platform’s current instructions for that device and region.
