A packaged-food company can report higher net sales while selling fewer units when its realized revenue per unit rises enough to offset the lost volume. Price realization, product mix, currency translation and portfolio changes can all affect the reported result—so revenue growth alone does not prove that consumers bought more product.
Sales and unit volume measure different things
As a simplified model, revenue is the number of units sold multiplied by the realized value per unit. Unit volume tracks a physical quantity; net sales track money received and may also reflect factors beyond unit count. If fewer units are sold, the average realized value must rise enough—or other reported-sales effects must be favorable enough—for revenue to grow.

Companies often report “price realization and mix” together. That combined measure is not the same as a pure price increase: it can reflect changes in prices as well as the relative sales of different products, customers or channels. Currency translation and changes in the company’s portfolio can further affect reported sales.

PepsiCo LatAm Foods: revenue rose despite lower unit volume
In the first quarter of 2026, PepsiCo reported that LatAm Foods net revenue increased 16% while unit volume declined 2%, primarily reflecting Mexico. The company attributed the revenue result to a 13-percentage-point favorable foreign-exchange impact, primarily from the strengthening Mexican peso, and effective net pricing, partly offset by lower organic volume. General Mills: favorable price/mix did not offset the volume decline
For fiscal 2026, General Mills’ consolidated net sales fell 5%. Its reported bridge showed an 8-percentage-point negative contribution from volume growth, compared with positive contributions of 2 points from net price realization and mix and 1 point from foreign exchange. Those favorable factors did not make up for the volume decline. Organic net sales fell 2%; organic volume and organic net price realization/mix each contributed negative 1 point. PepsiCo EMEA: another case of growth with lower volume
In fiscal 2025, PepsiCo reported EMEA net revenue growth of 8%, primarily reflecting effective net pricing and a 2.5-percentage-point favorable foreign-exchange impact, partly offset by organic volume decline. Convenient-food unit volume fell 5%. As with the LatAm example, the reported revenue increase should not be read as evidence of higher unit demand. PepsiCo’s fiscal 2025 results.

How to read a sales-versus-volume comparison
When evaluating a company’s results or comparing periods, separate the drivers and check that they refer to the same business scope and basis:

- Identify the sales measure. Check whether the figure is net sales or revenue, and whether it covers a segment or the consolidated company.
- Find the volume change and its definition. A company may measure volume in units, cases, pounds or shipment weight. General Mills says its volume-growth contributions are measured in tons based on the stated weight of product shipments. General Mills’ fiscal 2026 Form 10-K.
- Separate price from mix where possible. If the filing combines them as “net price realization and mix,” do not describe the whole contribution as a price increase.
- Check currency effects. Translation into the reporting currency can lift reported sales even without more units or equivalent growth in local-currency sales.
- Account for portfolio changes. Acquisitions, divestitures and other listed items can affect reported sales and the reconciliation to organic measures.
- Check the comparison basis and period. Reported net sales and company-defined organic sales are not interchangeable; neither are results from different geographies, segments or fiscal periods.
The contribution figures show whether favorable effects actually outweighed the negative volume contribution. For General Mills in fiscal 2026, they did not; for PepsiCo LatAm Foods in the first quarter of 2026, net revenue rose despite lower unit volume, with favorable currency and net pricing among the cited drivers.
