For a Tamil page aimed at India, for example, use ta_IN—not as a universal setting for every Tamil website.
Add the tags to the page head
Open Graph metadata describes a page when it is shared. The protocol’s four required properties are og:title, og:type, og:image and og:url. Add them as <meta> elements in the document head. The example below is for a Tamil-language page aimed at India; replace the sample URL, image and copy with details for your own page.

<meta property="og:type" content="website">
<meta property="og:url" content="https://example.com/ta/page/">
<meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/images/tamil-page.jpg">
<meta property="og:locale" content="ta_IN">
<meta property="og:description" content="இந்தப் பக்கத்தின் சுருக்கமான தமிழ் விளக்கம்.">
<meta property="og:site_name" content="உங்கள் தளத்தின் பெயர்">
<meta property="og:image:alt" content="பகிரப்படும் படத்தின் சுருக்கமான விளக்கம்">
</head>
<body>
<!-- page content -->
</body>
</html>
The lang attribute is ordinary HTML language metadata; og:locale is the Open Graph language-and-territory signal. Keep them consistent with the page’s language and intended audience.
Choose each value for the actual page
Title, description and type
og:titleis the title you want associated with the shared page. Write it in Tamil when the page is intended for Tamil readers.og:descriptionshould be a concise, useful summary in Tamil. The protocol describes a one- or two-sentence summary.og:typeidentifies the object. Usewebsitefor a normal website page; choose a more specific supported type only if it accurately describes the page.
Canonical URL and image
og:urlshould be the canonical URL for that specific page, not a generic homepage URL or a URL for another language version.og:imageshould be an absolute URL to a representative image that the sharing platform can fetch. Addog:image:altwith a concise description of the image; it describes the image rather than serving as its caption.- The protocol also defines optional image properties such as secure URL, MIME type, width and height. Platform-specific image limits are not established here, so check the current requirements of the platform where you plan to share.
Locale and language variants
The protocol uses a language_TERRITORY format and documents en_US as its default. For a Tamil page aimed at India, ta_IN is a suitable example. Tamil is a language, not a territory: select the territory for the audience the page targets rather than applying India by default to every Tamil-language site.
#1 Best Overall
If the same page is available in other languages, Open Graph allows og:locale:alternate values for those other locales. Use alternate values only for genuine language variants of that page.
Generate the tags directly or with your site platform
For a static page or a custom application, place the tags directly in the HTML head and render different values for each page. With a CMS, an SEO plugin may generate Open Graph tags; Yoast’s functional specification documents generated output. Whichever method you use, inspect the delivered page source rather than relying only on values visible in an editing screen.

Check the delivered page before sharing
- Open the page’s delivered HTML source and confirm that all intended Open Graph tags appear inside
<head>. If the site renders pages dynamically, check the HTML a crawler receives, not only the browser’s post-load view. - Compare the metadata with the page: title, description, locale, canonical URL and image should all describe the same Tamil-language page. Make sure the HTML
langvalue agrees with the page language. - Confirm the image URL is absolute and points to the intended image, and that
og:image:altdescribes that image. - Use the target social platform’s current preview or debugging tool, if available, and request a fresh fetch after changing the tags. Preview behavior and cache handling vary by platform; do not assume a change will appear immediately.
Troubleshooting common problems
- The preview uses the wrong title or description: inspect the delivered HTML for duplicate or missing tags, and confirm that the values belong to the specific language page rather than a shared site-wide template.
- The image is missing: check that
og:imageis an absolute URL to the intended resource and that the sharing platform can fetch it. The available protocol guidance does not establish current image-size limits for each platform. - The page is identified as the wrong language or region: set
og:localeto the language and territory that match the target audience, and check that the HTMLlangattribute is consistent. Do not treatta_INas the locale for every Tamil page. - Your edits do not appear in a preview: verify the newly delivered source first, then use the platform’s current preview/debugging tool to request another fetch. Platform caching behavior is not established here.

ScreenshotNeo can capture a visual screenshot of your page after you publish the metadata. A screenshot shows the rendered page; it does not verify how a social platform parses Open Graph tags. One GET request returns a screenshot or PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options.
