PDFCrowd can turn a reachable webpage URL into a PDF, but the documented workflow is one URL per conversion—not an automatic whole-site crawl. To archive several pages, convert each selected URL, then use PDFCrowd’s PDF-to-PDF API to merge the resulting files if you want one combined document.
What PDFCrowd can archive
PDFCrowd’s HTML-to-PDF API can convert a public URL, HTML content, or an uploaded HTML file into a PDF. For URL conversion, the page and its resources must be reachable from PDFCrowd’s servers. The reviewed documentation does not describe a one-request sitemap archive or automatic crawl of an entire site. See the HTML-to-PDF API and API reference.

Plan the archive as a list of pages. Each URL is converted separately; if a single file is needed, merge those PDFs afterward with the PDF-to-PDF API.

Send a POST request to the documented versioned endpoint,
https://api.pdfcrowd.com/convert/24.04/. Authenticate to PDFCrowd with HTTP Basic authentication using your PDFCrowd username and API key. The HTTP interface accepts form fields, includingurl; it does not accept a JSON request body. -
Save the successful response body as a PDF. Check the HTTP status and response details: conversion errors can be returned as plain text or, with
errfmt=json, as JSON. -
Repeat the request for each page you want to preserve. Keep credentials private, and use your own account credentials in production.

The endpoint includes an explicit API version. Keep it explicit and check PDFCrowd’s current API reference and API versioning information before changing the version or relying on particular settings.
Choose layout and print behavior
A PDF is a paginated rendering, not necessarily a faithful record of how a page looks in a browser. Review a sample before converting a large batch. Set the paper size, orientation, margins, and viewport behavior for the intended use; headers and footers can include the page URL and page counters. The API reference documents rendering options, while PDFCrowd’s examples show layout configuration such as dimensions, margins, headers, footers, and “Page N of M.”
- For reading and printing: select a paper size and margins that keep text legible and avoid cutting off content.
- For provenance: consider adding the source URL in a header or footer.
- For navigation or accessibility: investigate the tagged-PDF setting, which is intended to retain logical HTML structure such as headings, paragraphs, lists, links, and reading order. Inspect the generated file rather than assuming that tagging guarantees perfect accessibility.
Archive several pages in one PDF

Make a definitive list of the URLs to preserve. A URL request captures the page as PDFCrowd can fetch it at conversion time; it does not create a crawl of linked pages.

Submit the resulting PDFs to PDFCrowd’s PDF-to-PDF API to merge them into one document, if a single archive file is more useful than separate files.

Check the merged file’s page order, page breaks, and readability. Keep the separate PDFs as well if you need to replace one page later without rebuilding the whole archive.

The documented merge workflow is based on converting chosen URLs and then merging their PDF outputs; it is not an automatic whole-site archiver.
Convert saved HTML or browser-prepared content
Upload a local HTML archive
If you have already saved HTML and its local resources, PDFCrowd supports uploading them together in an archive. If it contains multiple HTML files, set zip_main_filename to select which HTML document to convert. Selecting a main file does not combine all HTML pages in the archive into one PDF. See the API reference.
Use WebSave content mode for current browser HTML
PDFCrowd WebSave offers URL mode and content mode. URL mode is the straightforward choice for a public page, but it does not share the visitor’s login session or current form values. Content mode sends HTML already present in the browser and can include form input and prepared page content. PDFCrowd then renders that HTML on its servers; it is not a pixel capture of the browser screen. Content or interactive state absent from the submitted HTML—such as records that were never loaded—is not included automatically. Consult the WebSave documentation.

Protected pages, local sites, and source access
PDFCrowd’s API credentials authenticate your request to PDFCrowd; they do not sign you in to the source website. A protected source may need separate website credentials, cookies, or a custom HTTP header configured for the conversion. A source URL must also be reachable from PDFCrowd’s servers. For a local page that cannot be fetched remotely, send the HTML content or upload the saved HTML and required resources instead. These are separate input paths, not a way to make a private local URL remotely accessible.

Troubleshooting PDF conversions
- The URL conversion cannot reach the page: confirm that the address uses HTTP or HTTPS and is publicly reachable from PDFCrowd’s servers. A local
localhostURL is not remotely accessible; submit the HTML or upload the saved files instead. - A protected page produces a login screen or access error: API credentials only authenticate with PDFCrowd. Configure the source website’s required credentials, cookies, or custom header separately.
- The request fails when sent as JSON: send form fields for the documented HTTP interface; use multipart form data for file uploads.
- The output omits current form values or browser state: URL mode fetches the page independently and does not inherit the browser session or current form values. Use WebSave content mode to submit prepared HTML and relevant values, and verify that the required content is actually present in that HTML.
- The wrong HTML file is converted from an uploaded archive: set
zip_main_filenameto the intended file. This selects one document for conversion; it does not merge all pages in the archive. - The response is an error instead of a PDF: inspect the HTTP status and response body. Use
errfmt=jsonwhen JSON-formatted error details are more useful, then correct the request or source access problem. - The PDF is hard to read or poorly paginated: adjust paper size, margins, orientation, viewport behavior, and any header/footer settings, then inspect a new sample.
- A previously working endpoint or option changes: the documented endpoint is versioned. Check the current reference and versioning page before updating the endpoint or assuming an option remains supported.
Cost, reliability, and archive maintenance
The documentation cited here establishes the request and conversion workflow, but it does not provide a task-specific price estimate, completion-time guarantee, or archive-retention guarantee. Check PDFCrowd’s current account and service terms for those details before planning a recurring or large-scale archive.
Keep a manifest of the URLs converted and the output files associated with them. For repeat archives, note when each conversion was made: a URL conversion renders the page PDFCrowd can access at that time, so later page changes can produce different output. Validate files before treating the archive as complete, and retain individual PDFs if you may need to rebuild or merge them again.
