If template code depends on request context processors, remember that this helper call does not automatically receive a request context. Pass any required values explicitly in context, or use a rendering arrangement that supplies the request context.
PDFCrowd’s official Django guide uses a download form that posts to the existing view, retaining its prepared data and access checks. For a user-triggered download, follow the application’s intended HTTP method and CSRF design; a POST form should include Django’s CSRF token. The guide’s example uses pdfcrowd-remove on a download button to keep it on the web page but omit it from the PDF. Treat that as an example-specific behavior and confirm it for the conversion workflow you use before relying on it.
Choose the right conversion input and make assets reachable
For an invoice whose data and template belong to your Django app, render the template first and send the HTML string. PDFCrowd’s HTTP API also accepts a URL or an uploaded HTML file/archive, but those inputs solve different problems:

When using rendered HTML, review the template’s asset references. Absolute URLs or a suitable <base> element can resolve remote stylesheets, fonts, and images. For local assets, submit the HTML and resources together in a supported archive rather than expecting the remote converter to read files from the Django server’s filesystem.
Set page layout options for invoices
Start by making the invoice’s print layout predictable: define print CSS, page size, and margins. For multi-page invoices, configure page breaks and consider repeatable headers or footers. PDFCrowd also documents controls for orientation, custom CSS, JavaScript readiness, viewport behavior, remote fonts and images, watermarks, password protection, PDF/A, and tagged PDF output. Choose only the options the document needs, then verify the result in your own application.

Test representative invoices before relying on a layout in production, including long line items, non-ASCII text, and content that crosses page boundaries. The PDFCrowd documentation describes the available controls; it does not establish how a particular application’s invoice will render.
The optional setContentViewportWidth('balanced') call selects a balanced content viewport. You can instead select an exact viewport width when your design needs a fixed mapping between web layout width and PDF page width.

Once conversion succeeds, the returned bytes can flow through different delivery paths. Keep conversion in a helper such as render_invoice_pdf so a synchronous view, background task, or batch process can reuse it.
Browser download
Use HttpResponse(pdf, content_type='application/pdf') and set Content-Disposition to an attachment filename. The example above returns a download named for the invoice. PDFCrowd’s SDK examples also show streaming conversion output into a Django response, with Cache-Control: max-age=0 and Accept-Ranges: none; choose a response strategy consistently with your application’s delivery requirements.
Persistent storage
To save the result through Django’s storage abstraction, wrap the bytes in ContentFile. Use the actual name returned by storage, since it may change the requested name if a file already exists:

A background task can call the same helper, then save, email, or pass the bytes to another internal processing step. In a job or batch flow, record enough invoice and job context to diagnose failures, and apply the task system’s retry policy rather than returning a browser error.
Handle failures without weakening authorization
Conversion is an external service call, so decide how the application should behave when it fails. PDFCrowd’s Python examples catch pdfcrowd.Error; a user-facing view can return a controlled error response, while a background job can log diagnostic context and follow its retry policy. Avoid placing credentials or sensitive invoice content in client-visible error messages or logs.
- Fetch the invoice through the same scoped lookup and permission checks used by the rest of the application, before calling the conversion service.
- Keep account credentials on the server; the browser should request a download from Django, not call PDFCrowd with exposed credentials.
- Log an internal failure identifier and relevant non-sensitive job context, then show the user a brief controlled message.
- For background processing, distinguish a retryable provider failure from application errors such as an invalid invoice or unauthorized request.
PDFCrowd’s HTTP API uses a versioned endpoint, HTTP Basic authentication with the account username and API key, and form fields rather than a JSON request body. A successful conversion returns 200 OK with PDF bytes. Keep the API version explicit when using the HTTP API and consult the current versioning documentation before changing it. The ?errfmt=json query option changes error formatting; it does not change successful PDF responses.
Troubleshoot common integration problems
The converter cannot load CSS, fonts, or images
Check whether each referenced asset is public and reachable from PDFCrowd’s servers. Replace relative references with absolute URLs or add an appropriate <base> element. If assets exist only on the application host’s filesystem, submit them with the HTML in a supported archive instead.

A URL conversion cannot reach the Django page
Do not submit a development URL on localhost and expect PDFCrowd’s servers to see it. Render the HTML in Django and send the resulting string, or use a URL that the converter can actually reach.
Template variables are missing
render_to_string does not automatically get request context processors when called without a request. Pass the needed values explicitly or change the rendering arrangement to supply request context.
The PDF layout differs from the browser page
Review print CSS, page size, margins, and viewport width. For invoices that span pages, check page breaks and repeatable headers or footers. Validate long descriptions, special characters, and multi-page cases against the application’s actual templates.
The conversion raises an SDK error
Catch pdfcrowd.Error, keep the user response controlled, and log diagnostic context on the server. Confirm the configured credentials and the selected conversion input, then apply retries only where they make sense for the failure and execution path.
When a different PDFCrowd product fits better
