To play an intro once before returning to a looping video, put the intro in an OBS Media Source with Loop turned off, and put the repeating video in a separate scene with its Media Source’s Loop option turned on. Start on the intro scene, then switch to the loop scene when the intro ends. OBS’s documented Media Source settings do not themselves switch scenes automatically when a file finishes, so the straightforward documented setup requires a manual scene switch.
Set up the one-time video and the loop
- Create the loop scene. In OBS, select or create the scene that will contain the video you want to repeat.
- Add the looping video. In the Sources dock, click +, choose Media Source, create or select a source, then choose the video file. In its properties, enable Loop and confirm with OK.
- Create the intro scene. Add a separate scene for the video that should play only once.
- Add the one-time clip. In the intro scene’s Sources dock, click + and add a Media Source for the intro file. Leave Loop off; OBS documents it as off by default.
- Choose what happens to the final frame. In the intro source’s properties, enable Show nothing when playback ends if you want the source to disappear at the end rather than leave its last frame visible. This hides the source; it does not switch scenes.
- Start the stream on the intro scene. Begin the YouTube stream with the intro scene selected. When the clip finishes, select the loop scene in OBS.
These controls are configured per source. The built-in Media Source’s Loop option repeats that file; it does not determine what another scene does. OBS’s Media Sources guide documents playback options, but does not establish an automatic scene-return setting for this workflow. The documented baseline is therefore a manual switch after the intro ends.

Settings that affect playback
Loop
Turn Loop on for the file that should repeat and off for the one-time intro. The Media Source guide lists Loop as off by default.
Restart playback when source becomes active
This setting restarts a file when its source becomes active in the current scene and visible. It is on by default according to OBS’s guide. Consider the behavior when you switch away from a scene and later return: if restart is enabled, the source may begin from the start again when it becomes active.

Show nothing when playback ends
Enable this on the one-time source if you do not want its final frame to remain visible after the file completes. It hides the source, but does not select another scene or start the loop video.
When a playlist needs VLC Video
For a playlist rather than a single video, OBS offers a VLC Video source. It requires VLC to be installed; with 64-bit OBS, OBS’s guide specifies installing 64-bit VLC. Its Loop Playlist option repeats the playlist after it runs out and is on by default.

VLC Video also has a Visibility Behaviour setting for playback when the source is not visible. The documented default is to stop when not visible and restart when visible. Check this setting if you expect a playlist to continue while hidden. For one intro followed by a separate looping scene, the built-in Media Source and scene arrangement above is the more direct setup. Details are in the OBS Media Sources guide.

Do not treat Loop or Show nothing when playback ends as an automatic scene-switch command. OBS’s Source API documents lifecycle and media events, including activation, visibility, and media_ended, but the presence of those events does not by itself configure a scene transition. The OBS Source API Reference is relevant to custom automation; the official pages cited here do not verify a specific automatic return setup.

Confirm that the automation detects the end of the correct source and switches to the intended loop scene. Without that verified setup, plan to switch scenes manually.

Common problems and fixes
- The intro repeats. Open the intro Media Source properties and turn Loop off.
- The loop video stops after one play. Open that source’s properties and enable Loop.
- The intro’s last frame stays on screen. Enable Show nothing when playback ends for the intro source. Remember that this hides the source rather than changing scenes.
- The loop restarts after switching back to its scene. Check Restart playback when source becomes active on that source and choose the behavior you want.
- A playlist stops when its scene is hidden. For VLC Video, review Visibility Behaviour; its documented default is stop when not visible and restart when visible.
- VLC Video is unavailable or does not work as expected. Install VLC. If OBS is 64-bit, OBS specifies 64-bit VLC.
- The stream remains on the intro after it ends. With the documented manual setup, select the loop scene in OBS. End-of-playback hiding is not a scene switch.
