Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIn OBS, open Settings → Advanced, enable Automatic Reconnect, then set Retry Delay and Maximum Retries. Retry Delay is the initial wait, not a fixed interval: OBS doubles the wait on each retry. Choose the retry count based on how long you want OBS to keep trying, and check the YouTube broadcast’s Auto-stop setting too.
Set up automatic reconnect in OBS
- In OBS, open Settings → Advanced and find Automatic Reconnect. Turn it on. OBS documents the control in Advanced settings, but its precise placement can vary by version or output mode.
- Set Retry Delay to the initial wait before OBS tries to reconnect. It is a starting wait, not a promise that every attempt will be separated by the same interval: OBS doubles the retry time on each attempt.
- Set Maximum Retries to the number of attempts you want OBS to make. OBS does not prescribe a universally correct delay or retry count; choose based on how long an interruption you are prepared to tolerate while OBS continues trying.
Because the wait grows with successive retries, a higher retry count can extend the period over which OBS attempts recovery. The exact total depends on the starting delay and the retry sequence. Check the labels in your installed OBS version rather than relying on a version-specific screenshot.

Check YouTube’s broadcast behavior
OBS reconnect settings are only one part of recovery. For a scheduled YouTube broadcast, review whether Auto-stop is enabled. OBS’s YouTube integration guidance says disabling Auto-stop can allow reconnection to the same scheduled broadcast after an interruption; with Auto-stop enabled, a later reconnection to that broadcast may be prevented. A broadcast may also eventually end after several hours without incoming stream data, even if OBS is configured to retry.
Make sure OBS is reconnecting to the intended broadcast and stream key. A stream key connects the encoder to the broadcast; it does not keep the broadcast open if YouTube ends it.

When reconnect attempts keep happening
Automatic reconnect can retry after a drop, but it cannot repair the cause. Repeated drops call for checking the connection and the load you are placing on it, rather than simply increasing the retry delay.
- Check upload stability and bitrate. OBS identifies an unstable connection or a bitrate higher than the connection can sustain as possible causes of dropped frames. Its troubleshooting guidance suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting point. This is general OBS troubleshooting advice, not a YouTube-specific official bitrate requirement or a guarantee; also account for other devices and traffic sharing the connection.
- Prefer Ethernet when Wi-Fi is unstable. OBS warns that Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming. A wired connection can remove Wi-Fi as a source of instability, but it cannot fix an issue elsewhere in the network path.
- Check the network path. OBS lists possible causes including software interference and faulty network hardware. Inspect the router, modem, network interface and cables; a damaged cable can be part of the problem.
- Consider Dynamic Bitrate as a fallback. OBS says this can reduce dropped frames when the connection cannot keep up, but it does not fix the underlying issue and may reduce video quality.
- Keep network binding at its default unless troubleshooting calls for a test. OBS recommends keeping Bind to IP at Default. Its guidance says some users report benefit from Windows-only network optimization and TCP pacing settings; these are not universal fixes. If testing IPv4-only makes no difference, return IP Family to IPv4 and IPv6.
Common problems and what to check
| Symptom | Likely area to investigate | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| OBS retries, then reconnects, but drops again | Unstable connectivity, insufficient upload headroom, or network hardware/software | Check the stable upload capacity, lower the bitrate if needed, try Ethernet, and inspect the network path. |
| OBS is still trying, but the scheduled broadcast no longer accepts the reconnection | YouTube Auto-stop or the broadcast ending after a prolonged period without incoming data | Review Auto-stop for the scheduled broadcast and confirm that the broadcast remains available to reconnect to. |
| Video continues but quality falls when Dynamic Bitrate is active | OBS is adapting to a connection that cannot sustain the configured bitrate | Treat the quality change as a fallback signal; investigate the connection and bitrate rather than assuming Dynamic Bitrate resolved the cause. |
| Changing retry timing does not stop repeated drops | Reconnect timing controls attempts, not network reliability | Diagnose connectivity, bitrate headroom, interference, and hardware before adjusting retry policy again. |
Or let it run in the cloud
