Average concurrent viewers show the typical simultaneous audience; peak concurrent viewers show the maximum. Views show playbacks, not how many people watched together. Read these numbers alongside watch time, average view duration, and interaction—and compare streams using the same YouTube reporting surface and date range.
Which YouTube livestream metrics matter?
No single number tells you whether a stream succeeded. Choose metrics that answer distinct questions, then read them as a group.

Audience size: average and peak concurrent viewers
- Average concurrent viewers is the average number of viewers watching simultaneously over the stream. It is usually the more useful measure of the stream’s typical live audience.
- Peak concurrent viewers is the highest simultaneous audience reached. It identifies the stream’s high point, not its typical audience; a brief spike can sit alongside a much lower average.
YouTube Help defines average concurrent viewers as “The average number of viewers who were simultaneously watching your stream at any one time.” Google’s YouTube Analytics API also defines average and peak concurrent viewers; with a livestream-position breakdown, those measures can apply to a segment rather than the whole stream.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteViewing depth: watch time and average view duration
- Total watch time is the total time the event was played across views.
- Average view duration is the estimated average number of minutes watched per view.
Use these with views to add a duration dimension to reach. YouTube Studio’s audience-retention reporting can help you see where viewing changed during the stream. A final average alone does not show when attention rose or fell, and it does not establish why.

Discovery: impressions, click-through rate, and views
Where the selected Analytics view makes them available, impressions and impressions click-through rate help describe how viewers encountered a stream and whether its thumbnail exposure resulted in a view. Views describe resulting playbacks. Think of these as stages in a discovery funnel, not interchangeable success scores: strong reach does not establish that viewers stayed.
YouTube Analytics’ broader reach reports can also include unique viewers and traffic sources such as Browse features, YouTube Search, suggested videos, direct or unknown sources, and channel pages. The reports and metrics visible depend on the Analytics view you select.
Participation and channel outcomes
- Chat rate is messages sent in live chat per minute. YouTube Help defines it as “The number of messages sent in live chat per minute.” It measures chat activity, not audience size. Read it alongside concurrent viewers and the stream’s format.
- Chat messages show post-stream chat activity in Analytics.
- Likes and reactions indicate viewer responses; likes are visible in the live dashboard and transfer to the VOD archive. Post-stream snapshots can include reactions and their types.
- Subscribers gained records subscribers gained during the stream in the post-stream snapshot. Interpret it in relation to audience size and how viewers found the broadcast.
- Reminders set can help assess a scheduled stream. Studio video-level analytics reports reminders for the selected date range, excluding reminders later removed.
Where and when to check the numbers
While the stream is live
Open the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room to monitor stream status and health, concurrent viewers, peak concurrent viewers, duration, likes, chat rate, views, and average view duration. These real-time readings are useful for monitoring a live event, but they are not necessarily identical to the processed report available later.

After the stream ends
Live Control Room provides a quick post-stream snapshot. YouTube says livestream reporting is available at video level in Analytics within minutes after a stream ends, and the data can be downloaded as a CSV. Studio also provides video-level and channel-level concurrent-viewer measures and retention reporting.
Keep the scope straight: a video-level average or peak describes a particular broadcast; a channel-level measure summarizes streams across the selected period. YouTube Analytics is based on video ID, and its data is processed and despammed. YouTube describes it as measuring different information from Live Control Room, so do not combine readings from the two surfaces as if they were one unchanged counter.
For a simultaneous horizontal and vertical stream
Live Control Room combines metrics when horizontal and vertical formats are streamed together. To inspect vertical-feed-only performance, wait at least 24 hours after the stream, then open the ended stream in Studio:

How to compare livestreams fairly
Compare like with like. Use the same reporting surface, scope, date range, and stream format. A vertical-only result and a combined horizontal-and-vertical result are not equivalent; label the distinction when comparing them.
A repeatable scorecard can capture the numbers and context that make a comparison interpretable:
- Average concurrent viewers and peak concurrent viewers.
- Views, total watch time, and average view duration.
- Impressions and impressions click-through rate, when shown in the relevant Live Analytics view.
- Chat rate or chat messages, likes or reactions, and subscribers gained.
- Stream duration, format, reporting date range, and whether each figure came from Live Control Room or processed Analytics.
Use average concurrents to compare typical simultaneous audience and peak concurrents to compare maximum audience. Pair both with watch time and average view duration for viewing depth, then consider interaction measures in the context of audience size. High views can coexist with short viewing duration, and active chat can come from a smaller audience. Compare streams with similar formats, durations, topics, promotion, and audiences when possible; this is a comparison against your own channel history, not a universal benchmark.

Is there a “good” livestream metric?
YouTube’s metric documentation defines what the measures represent but does not establish a universal good peak concurrent count, chat rate, or average view duration. A useful target depends on the channel and the stream. Treat changes against comparable broadcasts as local evidence, not a platform-wide standard, and avoid declaring a stream successful or unsuccessful from peak concurrents alone.
