To set an alert, open the Nasdaq-listed or technology stock in your brokerage app, tap Set an Alert, Price Alert, or the bell icon, choose a trigger, enter the threshold, select available notifications, and save. Then confirm the alert in the app’s active-alert list and allow notifications in your phone settings. An alert is a notification only; it does not place a buy or sell order.
What a stock price alert does
A price alert watches a security and notifies you when a condition you define occurs. The condition can be a fixed price, a dollar or percentage move, a new 52-week high or low, or, in some platforms, a technical event such as a moving-average cross. Alerts are useful for Nasdaq and technology shares because they let you monitor a target without repeatedly opening a chart.

The exact labels differ by broker and app version. Look for Set an Alert, Price Alert, Stock Alerts, a bell icon, or an alert option in a watchlist row. The ticker symbol is the key identifier: select the correct listing before creating the alert, especially when a company has multiple share classes or listings.

Prepare before creating the alert
- Confirm the ticker and security name. Check that you opened the intended Nasdaq listing rather than a similarly named fund, preferred share, warrant, or foreign receipt.
- Decide whether you need a fixed price, a movement threshold, a 52-week event, a technical condition, or a news or earnings notification.
- Choose a level that has a clear purpose, such as a price at which you want to reassess the position. Avoid setting a large collection of arbitrary alerts that you will ignore.
- Check whether the app covers securities in your watchlist, holdings, or both. Coverage differs by platform.
- Enable the brokerage app’s notifications in the operating system. If push permission is blocked, an alert may exist in the app without appearing on your lock screen.
- After saving, open the active-alert manager and verify the symbol, direction, threshold, delivery method, and status.
The common five-step workflow
- Open the quote. Search for the ticker, or open it from a watchlist or holdings screen. Go to the quote or chart page.
- Open the alert control. Tap Set an Alert, Price Alert, or the bell icon. Some apps place the control in a three-dot menu.
- Select the trigger. Choose a target price, movement by dollars or percentage, 52-week high or low, technical condition, or available news and event category.
- Enter the threshold and delivery choices. Specify the price, amount, percentage, direction, or moving average. Select push, email, text, or in-app delivery when the broker offers those choices.
- Save and verify. Save the alert, review it in the active-alert list, and confirm that phone notifications are allowed. Check whether it is one-time or recurring and understand which trading session and quote timing it uses.
Choose the right trigger
| Trigger | What it watches | When it is useful |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed target price | Price reaches a number you enter, usually with an above or below direction. | Reassessing a buy zone, a profit target, or a risk level. |
| Dollar movement | The security moves by a specified dollar amount. | Monitoring an absolute move when the share price makes percentages less intuitive. |
| Percentage movement | The security rises or falls by a specified percentage. | Comparing moves across stocks with very different share prices. |
| 52-week high or low | A newly reached high or low over the trailing 52-week period. | Finding breakouts, momentum changes, or unusual weakness. |
| Technical condition | A rule involving an indicator, such as price crossing an exponential moving average. | Following a systematic chart signal instead of a single price. |
| News or events | Broker-supported headlines or scheduled events, including earnings where available. | Preparing for information that may move a technology stock even when a price level has not been reached. |
A fixed target is easiest to understand, but it can produce a notification after a brief spike. A percentage trigger adapts to the stock’s scale, while a technical trigger depends on the broker’s calculation and update timing. If your decision depends on a specific market event, pair a price alert with a news or earnings alert when the app supports both.
Set alerts in Schwab Mobile
Create a target-price alert
- Open Markets in Schwab Mobile.
- Search for the stock symbol and open its quote.
- Tap Set an Alert.
- Choose Target price.
- Select the direction, enter the target price, and tap Set Alert.
Schwab’s alert screen also includes News and events, including earnings-report alerts. Use that category when the event itself matters more than a particular price.
Review triggered and open alerts
Open the profile icon, then choose Stock Alerts. Open alerts are managed there; triggered notifications appear under the Triggered alerts tab.
Recommended Free Tools
Schwab says its mobile alerts are not synchronized with alerts created in thinkorswim or on Schwab.com. If you use more than one Schwab platform, review each platform’s alert list rather than assuming an alert created in one place appears in the others.

Set alerts in Fidelity
Use Active Trader Tools
- Open Fidelity’s alert tool and select Set Alert.
- Enter the symbol for the stock, ETF, option, or mutual fund.
- Choose a price-alert type.
- Specify the parameters, such as the direction and threshold.
- Save the alert, then verify that your configured notification options can deliver it.
Fidelity’s documented movement alerts notify you when a security rises above or falls below a target. The supported instruments described in its Active Trader Tools help include stocks, ETFs, options, and mutual funds, so the workflow is not limited to Nasdaq common shares.
Use Trader+ technical conditions
Fidelity Trader+ documents alerts for dollar movement, percentage movement, a new 52-week high or low, and price crossing the 20-day, 50-day, or 200-day exponential moving average. Select the condition that matches your method, then supply the required amount, percentage, direction, or moving-average choice.

Create an alert from a watchlist
Fidelity’s watch-list help says stocks listed on NYSE, NASDAQ, and AMEX can be added to watch lists. From the security row, select the option to create a new price trigger. This is useful when you monitor a group of technology stocks without holding them.

Set alerts in Robinhood
Create a custom price alert from a chart
- Open the specific stock and display its chart.
- Choose the control for a custom price alert.
- Enter the target and save it.
Robinhood’s official help describes custom price alerts from an individual stock’s chart. For assets you hold or watch, it also documents price-movement alerts with thresholds of 5% or 10% and optional notifications for a new 52-week high or low.
Turn on push notifications
- Open Account.
- Tap the three-bar Menu.
- Choose Settings.
- Open Notification and messages.
- Select Push notifications and enable stock-price-movement notifications.
Creating an alert and permitting delivery are separate steps. If the alert is visible in the app but no banner arrives, revisit this notification path and your phone’s system-level permission for the app.
Broker differences that affect your setup
| Broker app | Where you start | Documented trigger choices | Coverage and management details |
|---|---|---|---|
| Schwab Mobile | Markets → symbol quote → Set an Alert | Target price; news and events, including earnings-report alerts | Open alerts: profile icon → Stock Alerts; triggered alerts: Triggered alerts tab. Mobile alerts are not synchronized with thinkorswim or Schwab.com. |
| Fidelity | Set Alert in Active Trader Tools, or a watchlist security row | Above/below target; dollar or percentage movement; 52-week high or low; 20-, 50-, or 200-day exponential moving-average cross in Trader+ | Documented support includes stocks, ETFs, options, and mutual funds; watchlists can include NYSE, NASDAQ, and AMEX stocks. |
| Robinhood | Specific stock chart for a custom alert | Custom price; 5% or 10% movement for held or watched assets; optional 52-week high or low | Push notification controls are under Account → Menu → Settings → Notification and messages → Push notifications. |
These differences matter more than the exchange name. Nasdaq identifies where a stock is listed, but the alert features depend on the brokerage platform, the security type, and the app’s current configuration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDelivery methods and notification reliability
Broker apps may offer push notifications, email, text messages, or an in-app alert center. Select the channel you will actually check, and use a second channel only when missing the event would matter. Fidelity says delivery follows your configured notification options; the available choices can depend on account and platform settings.
- Allow notifications for the brokerage app in iOS or Android settings.
- Check Focus, Do Not Disturb, battery-saving, and background-data settings that can delay push delivery.
- Keep your email address and phone number current if you use email or text alerts.
- Verify that the alert is active after an app update or device change.
- Do not treat the time a message appears on your phone as the exact time the market crossed the threshold; network and notification delays are possible.
Session hours, quote timing, and one-time alerts
Broker documentation cited for these workflows does not establish one universal rule for regular-session prices, extended-hours prices, delayed quotes, or recurring versus one-time behavior. Check the alert’s details before relying on it. The app may specify whether extended-hours activity is included, whether the quote is delayed, and whether the alert deactivates after firing.

This distinction is important for volatile technology shares. A stock can cross a level briefly in premarket or after-hours trading and then open elsewhere during the regular session. If your plan applies only during regular trading, use an alert configuration that matches that plan or confirm the session status before acting.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to build useful alert plans
For a planned entry
Set a fixed-price alert below the current quote at the level where you will reassess the company and market conditions. The notification should prompt analysis, not an automatic purchase. Review valuation, news, liquidity, and the spread before placing an order.

For a position you already own
Use an above or below target that corresponds to a decision point, and consider a percentage movement alert for a sharp move that may not reach your longer-term target. Add an earnings or news alert when a scheduled report could change your assumptions.
For momentum or trend monitoring
Use a 52-week high alert for breakout monitoring, or a moving-average cross when your platform supports it. Fidelity Trader+ documents 20-day, 50-day, and 200-day exponential moving-average conditions. Keep the chosen period consistent with your strategy; a shorter average will generally produce more frequent signals than a longer one.
Best Value
For a watchlist you do not own
Use watchlist-based alerts where supported. Fidelity explicitly supports watchlists containing NYSE, NASDAQ, and AMEX stocks, while Robinhood documents alerts for assets held or watched. A watchlist alert lets you monitor a candidate without opening a position.
Manage, edit, and troubleshoot alerts
The alert saved but no notification arrived
- Open the broker’s active-alert list and confirm that the symbol and threshold are correct.
- Check phone-level permission, the broker’s in-app notification setting, and Focus or Do Not Disturb modes.
- Review whether the price crossed during a session the alert excludes.
- Check whether the alert fired once and moved to a triggered or historical list.
- Confirm that the quote was current enough for the condition; delayed data can make the displayed crossing time differ from the notification time.
Too many alerts are firing
Delete broad percentage or 52-week alerts that no longer support a decision. Keep one alert per actionable level, and separate event alerts from price alerts so a busy earnings day does not bury a price signal.
The alert is on the wrong security
Delete it and recreate it from the correct quote page. Compare the company name, ticker, exchange label, share class, and security type before saving.
Alerts differ between platforms
Do not assume mobile, web, and advanced-trading interfaces share a single list. Schwab explicitly says its mobile alerts are not synchronized with thinkorswim or Schwab.com. Review each platform independently when you use more than one.
You received an alert but are unsure what to do
Read the trigger description and inspect the live quote, chart, volume, and relevant news. An alert confirms that a condition was detected; it does not establish why the move occurred or whether a trade is appropriate.
Safety and decision rules
- Never assume an alert will execute an order. Submit and confirm a separate order only after reviewing it.
- Set alerts at levels tied to a written plan rather than reacting to every intraday fluctuation.
- Use percentage triggers cautiously on low-priced or highly volatile shares; a small absolute move can create a large percentage.
- For technical alerts, understand the indicator’s period and whether the broker calculates it from regular-session data.
- Review alerts after stock splits, symbol changes, mergers, or a change in investment thesis.
- Keep account security protections enabled. Push notifications can reveal financial activity on a lock screen, so adjust preview settings if privacy matters.
Bottom line
The reliable method is the same across brokerage apps: open the correct Nasdaq or technology-stock quote, choose the platform’s alert control, select a trigger and threshold, enable delivery, and verify the saved alert. Schwab Mobile emphasizes target-price and news/event alerts, Fidelity offers broad instrument coverage plus movement and technical conditions, and Robinhood combines chart-based custom alerts with 5% or 10% movement and 52-week notifications. Treat every alert as a prompt to review information—not as a trade instruction—and confirm session, quote, and notification settings before depending on it.
